man i'd like to see bottomless pit again

I love Chris Thomson, but the Red-Eyed Legends sounded kinda lifeless to me when I listened to it, which was not something I would have ever imagined from a CT record. Maybe my memory is harsh. Coffin Pricks sound alright so far ...
― grandavis, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 17:43 (twelve years ago) link
yeah i could never get into REL as much as skull kontrol or the monorchid
― congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 17:44 (twelve years ago) link
yeah i saw red-eyed legends too and they didn't do much for me
― the penultimate prophets (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 17:45 (twelve years ago) link
I think maybe they just weren't good. Whereas Skull Kontrol, The Monorchid, and Circus Lupus were great.
― grandavis, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 17:46 (twelve years ago) link
feel like his bands always start out strong and then fade pretty quickly, maybe that's why he's in a new band every couple of years?
― congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 17:47 (twelve years ago) link
Yeah, maybe so. Don't know much about the dude at all, just like the records from those bands. Liked the first Skull Kontrol a lot better than the second though, so perhaps true overall.
― grandavis, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 17:48 (twelve years ago) link
I know a bunch of folks who weren't into Red Eyed Legneds much I always liked seeing them and dig the records, though I am admitedly biased.
Heard some of the Coffin Pricks stuff and I really like, though again I'm pretty much a sucker for any CT thing

That whole record rules. Played the hell out of it when I had a radio show. Plus, it's got Rick Froberg on it!

Man, what does Andy Coronado do now? That guy's playing hits so many sweet spots for me. Was he in the Wrangler Brutes too?
― grandavis, Thursday, 5 April 2012 15:51 (twelve years ago) link
he was
― Rudy Ray Reardon (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:30 (twelve years ago) link
Thought so, thanks (could have looked it up I guess). Gonna go listen to some Coronado.

new band from chicago called Football, one guy used to be in some great bands in mpls
http://soundcloud.com/football-chicago
initially riff reminds me of A Frames but then it gets a bit more garage but it's cool
― Mississippi Butt Hurt (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 5 April 2012 17:31 (twelve years ago) link
Football were sort of ridic metal-y when I saw them but I think they have "evolved" since then, natch
― chr1sb3singer, Thursday, 5 April 2012 18:15 (twelve years ago) link
haha really weird
― Mississippi Butt Hurt (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 5 April 2012 18:16 (twelve years ago) link
I think it was their first non-Super Bowl show and everyone(me)was really drunk so that might have affected my preception of it

had no idea the split cranium (isis, circle, pharoah overlord) record had dropped: http://splitcranium.bandcamp.com/

Speaking of Wrangler Brutes related bands, there's a new band called C.R.A.S.H. that has Dean, from No Age, Michelle from Mika Miko, Cundo, from Nazti Skinz, and Brooks from Wrangler Brutes/Universal Order of Armageddon. REALLY good project. It's interesting to hear people from No Age and Mika Miko play straightforward hardcore.

Re Fake Limbs:
they kinda sound like rye coalition before they went totally led zep
That description alone really makes me want to check them out. Thanks!

ha that's funny because i said the same thing on facebook and one of my friends was making fun of me for using "early rye coalition" as a helpful musical description

I know, right? I was all fired up to book them a pvd show but apparently one of the dudes had a baby and now they're semi-defunct.

so whats been going on around portland/olympia/spokane/seattle? who should i check out from that area?
― billstevejim, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:10 (eleven years ago) link
This may violate the 'non-indie'ness of this thread to some extent, but from Olympia, you should scope:
- Milk Music- Gun Outfit- Broken Water- Weird TV- Son Skull- White Boss
― ghosttaster, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:28 (eleven years ago) link
Milk Music just played up the road from where I was doing a show tonight (in the UK) which obv meant I didn't see them - they have a groundswell of publicity on their side tho so it probly did OK
my show had a pretty crappy turnout but featured London ensemble WOOLF who are relevant to the parameters of this thread and were triffic in a no wave riot grrrl standup drummer Skinned Teen way

I love the First Four EPs and lurve last year's "Rotten Apple," but am I the only fan who finds the production on the new Off! album a little... off?
― Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 17 May 2012 10:51 (eleven years ago) link
I haven't heard the new Off!...as much add I loved the 7 inch box, and seeing them live, I kinda don't wanna mess with it....it was this perfect little blast from someone I'd never expected to care about again
Not sure I want off to be around like a career band
― Bandersnatch Cumberbund (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 17 May 2012 13:42 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah, totally! It was just this out-of-nowhere surprise thing; it would kind of be cool as a standalone curiosity. What's wrong with the production on the new one? I thought the Pitchfork review pretty much said "more of the same," tunes-wise.
― Walter Galt, Thursday, 17 May 2012 13:46 (eleven years ago) link
I like the new one a good deal more than the EPs collection - there's very little demonstrable difference btwn them other than (imo) the songs on 'Off!' are better and earwormier
