i am convinced this is why i did not get half the retail jobs i applied for after college.

tehresa, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 20:31 (fifteen years ago) link

Because you hate annoying people?

HI DERE, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 20:42 (fifteen years ago) link

I've never seen a test like that. What the hell?

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 20:43 (fifteen years ago) link

i just read about that house!

Yeah, same here. Place rules.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 20:44 (fifteen years ago) link

it's probably some shit they have a whole HR department monitoring, and they match it to some huge myers-briggs chart or something.

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 20:56 (fifteen years ago) link

admittedly, i prefer multi choice to questions like: 'list your strong points; list your weak points' i mean seriously what the shit is that kind of thing about.

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 20:57 (fifteen years ago) link

Ed, am I correct in remembering that you are a fellow that enjoys beverages of the interesting and obscure beer variety? if so, i have a place picked out, and as convenience would have it, i live within 5 minutes of the excel so transportation should be a non-issue.

FAX ME, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 20:59 (fifteen years ago) link

That sounds like a very awesome plan.

Ed, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 21:00 (fifteen years ago) link

jealousssssssss

tehresa, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 21:07 (fifteen years ago) link

HI DERE, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 21:46 (fifteen years ago) link

Hahah.

Dan, I think that might be M@tt 3s13r, but I have been asking the same question.

FAX ME, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 22:17 (fifteen years ago) link

RR those quizzes are both baffling and common in corporate retail pre-hiring world. I learned from a manager that:

1. Don't put down the most obviously sociopathic answers (duh)
2. On the non-sociopath screening ones ("Have you ever hit anyone at work?"), they're just looking for consistency. No real right or wrong answers on the 'team player' type ones, so long as you're consistent

Abbott, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 22:19 (fifteen years ago) link

unfortunately neither dan or Ed will be in town for the Belgian Beer festival they are hosting in Sept. 40+ belgians on tap at all times, total available on tap through the weekend? 80. don't expect a lot out of sense out of me that weekend.

FAX ME, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 22:20 (fifteen years ago) link

haha John, that was actually my guess as to who it was based on the existing friends!

oh noes John, why you braek beerhart?

HI DERE, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 22:21 (fifteen years ago) link

I mean, obv "Have you ever hit anyone at work?" is an "are you crazy?" question. (One I had to answer for employment screening at my last retail job.) Ones like "Do you like to see a project all the way through before starting new ones?" or "Do you enjoy being in crowds?" – I thought for YEARS they were looking for some specific answer that I could never guess at. Not so much – they're just making sure you answer them all similarly. ie if they asked "Do you enjoy being in crowds?" and "Do you like working in a large team?" and you gave completely different answers, that's when their bells go off.

Abbott, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 22:24 (fifteen years ago) link

oh MMPI, look what you have done

FAX ME, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 22:27 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh man, no way! The MMPI is fun. "Do you enjoy gardening?" was my favorite question.

Abbott, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 22:28 (fifteen years ago) link

How many times do I have to apologize! Sheesh

MMPI, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 22:29 (fifteen years ago) link

Ones like "Sometimes I feel very unhappy with life: T/F" – THOSE are the confusing ones. How often is sometimes? They should say "always, seldom, or never."

Abbott, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 22:29 (fifteen years ago) link

I enjoy gardening
o Always
o Seldom
o Never

Abbott, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 22:30 (fifteen years ago) link

I would enjoy work in construction
o Always
o seldom
o never

Abbott, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 22:30 (fifteen years ago) link

I have not thought about M4tt 3sl3r in about one hundred years.

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 22:36 (fifteen years ago) link

I was just wondering if maybe it might be time to start a new thread? Because...this one is getting really long. I mean, I LOVE loading 3874 answers just to catch up on two days, but just wondering...

aimurchie, Thursday, 21 August 2008 00:34 (fifteen years ago) link

oh come ON

The last one went to 15,000. Long way to go yet.

Upt0eleven, Thursday, 21 August 2008 00:35 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah sorry aimurchie but we don't start a new thread till this one causes ilx to almost crash. that's the rules here on itr.

just do what i do and bookmark it, then you don't have to load the whole page every time, just the new answers.

Rubyredd, Thursday, 21 August 2008 00:37 (fifteen years ago) link

I just assume everything hidden in the 'read them all' answers is not worth reading. Them all.

Abbott, Thursday, 21 August 2008 00:39 (fifteen years ago) link

^^^ tragically, this may be true.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 21 August 2008 00:41 (fifteen years ago) link

I had a feeling I was gonna be reprimamded. it's MY fault for not checking in five times a day - so...I'll remedy that.

And I'll bookmark it.
I apologize.

aimurchie, Thursday, 21 August 2008 00:44 (fifteen years ago) link

No reprimands here. Just :D

And Abbott there's LOADS of good stuff up there. You should check it out.

Upt0eleven, Thursday, 21 August 2008 00:55 (fifteen years ago) link

So, anyway. I was at a birthday party for my friends daughter (she's TWO!) with Skot S.'s best friend, who is immortalized on his '80's thread, and I met TWO ilx lurkers!
The number two is actually not significant. But it was weird - two people who "read ilx all the time" at work, but don't post because they're "afraid they would lose half of their productivity" if they did so.
I didn't reveal my identity. (For MANY good reasons; I just met them! Let's start off on the right foot, etc. :))
I mean, they talked about different threads, and were explaining ilx to the uninitiated in the group - meanwhile I'm like, dying to burst in and really explain it all, but...it's fun to hear someone explain ilx to people who have no idea (and potentially no interest) in it - except for the fact that there's a bunch of pictures of Maggie, from the '80's, posted on a thread.

This was a first for me.

aimurchie, Thursday, 21 August 2008 01:01 (fifteen years ago) link

I explained ILX to my son with something that I'm pretty sure someone at ILX wrote: It's a website about nothing! (I believe that person was riffing on Seinfeld being a "show about nothing.")

I have never run across lurkers, though. How crazy!

Sara R-C, Thursday, 21 August 2008 01:15 (fifteen years ago) link

I have had lurkers introduce themselves to me at gatherings, at concerts and online. Then again I am me, so.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 21 August 2008 02:04 (fifteen years ago) link

I thought so! I was like "Do you post?" - sort of trembling to have some strange screen name revealed, in the flesh! Nope - just lurkers. BUT - they lurk a lot, I think! Definitely know the ins and outs of the various boards.
Not ITR, however. I was able to be silently smug on that one. (They know ILM, ILE and Noize). Also - I don't think they know Skot IRL.

It was just very out of context. And I felt like I was having sort of an intense response: "Ilx? What? When? Screen name?" - because I know Maria, Beth and Scott, but otherwise you're all very dear strangers to me, really! I have been around here for enough years to feel pretty strongly about my online friendships. But I haven't actually met anyone from the boards, yet.
I should be going to Seattle in the next six months, so I'll hope for a FAP there - I would LOVE to meet Jaq and hang out with her in my old stomping grounds.
Oh, and we're all coming over to your house, Sara - when exactly?

aimurchie, Thursday, 21 August 2008 02:17 (fifteen years ago) link

And Abbott there's LOADS of good stuff up there. You should check it out.

Oh yeah, I've read most of it. I concur. But like if I haven't read in a day and there's some things from last night stuck in there, I'm not gonna look. Unliess it is HI DERE SPIDERMANGS.

Abbott, Thursday, 21 August 2008 02:27 (fifteen years ago) link

I miss Beth. :(

Abbott, Thursday, 21 August 2008 02:28 (fifteen years ago) link

Sorry ned, that was an xpost.
But, yeah, I am not surprised that lurkers (and semi-lurkers)would see you and recognize you. After all, that purple tie is a dead giveaway. (Kidding!)

But you are very much a public figure on ilx and ilm. I was looking at a picture that you posted, wondering if I would recognize you if I saw you in some random way. I'm not sure I would. And yet...maybe I would, in the right context - the right random context.

That would be a good band name. The right random context.

aimurchie, Thursday, 21 August 2008 02:28 (fifteen years ago) link

Shit, another xpost.

I miss Beth here too. Maybe we should get her to come to ITR.

aimurchie, Thursday, 21 August 2008 02:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Abbott, your perfect party thread has gone nuts, settled down, gone nuts...I'm so befuddled by certain folks insistence on "the Rules!". We have to go back to posting about the RULES, guys!

The RULES for a perfect partY!!!!!! You're not playing fair!!!!!

What rules?

aimurchie, Thursday, 21 August 2008 02:40 (fifteen years ago) link

xp I don't know when you're all coming to my house. I hope I'm not buried under 20 piles of books and a bunch of classes when it happens, though. I hate it when I miss the fun parts of my life!

I'd better check out that perfect party thread, too, huh.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 21 August 2008 03:36 (fifteen years ago) link

We are going to wisely wait until you graduate so as you can fix up all the busted toes and bloodied noses.

Yours included.

aimurchie, Thursday, 21 August 2008 03:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Good point. I'd better stock up on gauze and medical tape in the interim.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 21 August 2008 04:07 (fifteen years ago) link

Also ice packs, because they double for swelling and for booze.

Plus, if no-one gets hurt we can all pretend we're MUMMIES!

aimurchie, Thursday, 21 August 2008 04:54 (fifteen years ago) link

so that wanted movie. huh. not going to rave about it, although there are some points where its great, but most points of it were...not.
