i think the font works, its just the color is really wrong

you have to imagine it as a foil stamp, knowing southern lord

looks like they're already committed to that logo

Actually, that top is amazing.

See, to me, the font evokes something good-natured, friendly, and somewhat futuristic. But it should evoke something mysterious, elaborate, hallucinogenic, and vaguely threatening. This was better communicated by the font on "Sleep's Holy Mountain," though even that album's art looked somewhat amateur and probably could have been greatly improved.

it's retro-futuristic, as is the album title. Very 70s, fits the sound of the band just fine.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 2 April 2012 22:18 (1 year ago) Permalink

album title font, I should say. Smoking dope is timeless.

half want to read it as "bloop" though

otoh you gotta give these guys credit for finding new reasons to design covers for the same album

fwiw, i have no idea where that second one came from, fan made?

So it turns out it's part of a bigger painting:

Yeah that image badly needed an odd sailboat-shaped spacecraft. I was really worried for a moment there

the cover is a fractal that can be infinitely zoomed out

diamonddave85, Thursday, 5 April 2012 18:16 (1 year ago) Permalink

IIRC the second cover was by arik moonhawk roper

the late great, Thursday, 5 April 2012 18:46 (1 year ago) Permalink

who is no doubt a fan but i think more to the point kind of a "band bro"

the late great, Thursday, 5 April 2012 18:48 (1 year ago) Permalink

if roger dean is an honorary member of yes then arik roper is an honorary member of at least half the good stoner metal bands out there

the late great, Thursday, 5 April 2012 18:50 (1 year ago) Permalink

sadly it looks like he's removed a ton of his illustrations from his website, it's a much fancier website now but has way less of his art and a lot less of his early hand-drawn work which appeals to me more than his new oil painting style

i think this new cover must be by roper, too. craggy peaks, loose brush for the lines, basic look of those overgrown jawas and their weird dromedary. couldn't be anyone else.

way less of his art and a lot less of his early hand-drawn work which appeals to me more than his new oil painting style

yeah, feel the same, but he probably gets sick of people saying they liked his early stuff better. my favorite moonhawk:

better w/out the text

i've never understood wtf this is thiough

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 5 April 2012 21:59 (1 year ago) Permalink

i think it's much worse w/out the "Sleep" text (dull painting, basically), but much improved w/out the retro-computerized "DOPESMOKER"

it is a picture of a mystical guy burning HEMP and also a HEMP sweater that you could wear while smoking HEMP and following the smoke to the RIFF-FILLED land

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 5 April 2012 22:08 (1 year ago) Permalink

in defense of the text on the new cover, this is pretty kick-ass on its own. sharp, simple and very strong. most graphically dynamic part of the design, imo.

it was intended as sarcasm, i had posted the full version of the whole foldout just before you did.

It's like tablature only more cryptic.

I also like hearing what Matt Pike said about playing in Sleep vs High on Fire. "I count a lot more when I play Sleep."

How's the remaster? I only have the "legit" release with the burning bush/hemp sweater cover.

Matt M., Friday, 11 May 2012 15:19 (1 year ago) Permalink

I've just ordered the CD + T-shirt + Poster combo. Am tempted to get a vinyl copy for the awesome artwork too.
