blaming allan klein is a convenient dodge. "the devil won't let me" not the first (or last time) a great musician fails to appreciate his own best work

demolition with discretion (m coleman), Sunday, 1 April 2012 12:13 (twelve years ago) link

I wonder if Seger even knows that Abkco finally reissued some of those songs?

Mike Love Costume Jewelry on Etsy (C. Grisso/McCain), Sunday, 1 April 2012 16:43 (twelve years ago) link

a facebook friend of mine who's a veteran of the late 60s/early 70s detroit scene recently posted an "east side story" utube and commented that seger hates his old stuff and has never wanted it released. i find this credible, not only considering the source but seger's comments upthread feel evasive.

Except he still does "Heavy Music" in concert.

Also, if the Rolling fucking Stones can't even wrest control of their 60s catalog from Klein's cold, dead hands, I doubt Seger has much of a shot.

Dancing with Mr. T (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 1 April 2012 16:53 (twelve years ago) link

Except he still does "Heavy Music" in concert.

He didn't when I saw him in '07 - it was a straight Greatest Hits of the '70s and '80s show, with maybe three songs from Face the Promise thrown in.

i think klein has the pre-capitol singles, probably not those early LPs though no?

i think seger is dodging the question.

“Is ‘Night Moves,’ all things considered, your best song?” posits Costas, his usual sports-broadcaster cadence uneasily downshifted into a more casual, conversational tone reserved for serious rock talk.

“I don’t know, um,” replies Seger, age 46, his unnaturally dark hair and beard forming a quizzical question mark. “I don’t like to say this is better than that.”

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 17 April 2014 17:34 (nine years ago) link

No video here because this song isn’t online. Just imagine a very loud arena-rock song sung by a bearded Tina Turner.

“I don’t like to say this is better than that.”

Except, um, I don't want anyone to hear my early stuff.

Pictures, please, I need to see this shapeshifting coiffure.

I posted this to fb, and my uncle commented that he saw the Bob Seger System in 1969...during an afternoon assembly at his high school.

How the fuck do you go back to class after witnessing something like that?

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 2 February 2015 16:38 (nine years ago) link

Somewhere Seger described being a poor kid going to high school with "rich kids"---they portrayed themselves that way, and they had cool cars etc.---and still doing that when he suddenly got his first local airplay/hits, becoming this novelty celebrity, and the in-crowd, who had left him in the dust, were suddenly scooping him up, to be their status symbol/good luck charm, their golden mascot, him instead of fuzzy dice, I guess---and he wanted it! Wanted the acceptance, anyway.

dow, Monday, 2 February 2015 16:50 (nine years ago) link

Think he was still mainly gigging, but some local airplay already.

arrrg fuck I wish I'd thought to download them.

Wonder if it was the tv station, or Allen Klein, or Seger himself. A friend of mine on Bob's suppression of his early shit said Bob probably doesn't want to hear "Man, you WERE so great 45 years ago!"

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 3 February 2015 15:58 (nine years ago) link

All of those videos are available on a DVD that came out in 2012 and was reviewed by David Fricke in Rolling Stone. So they're easily obtained. But yeah, I'd never seen em either!

Couldn't have been Klein--All Abkco controls re:Segar is the original Hideout/Cameo-Parkway singles from '66-67.

Speaking of the Hideout stuff, would you believe that a copy of "East Side Story" made it over to Merry Olde and into the hands of a Mod Band? It's true!

I can understand holding out against streaming services, but ffs, The Distance is out of print?

His management is obviously fucking up, but surely Seger must be somewhat aware of the deluxe boxes and vinyl reissues his contemporaries have been putting out. And if so, is he just thinking, "Welp, not for me"? If he's not careful, in a few years he's gonna end up like the Dave Clark Five -- once huge, now forgotten, due to factors that were completely and easily avoidable.

The following Seger albums are now on Spotify and iTunes, Apple Music, etc., etc.:

Ramblin' Gamblin' Man, Beautiful Loser, Live Bullet, Night Moves, Stranger in Town, Against the Wind, Nine Tonight, The Distance, Like a Rock, The Fire Inside

On Spotify at least, some are credited to Bob Seger, while others are credited to Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band, so they don't all come up with a single search.
