WHAT A DRAG IT IS GETTING POLLED – ILM Artist Poll #16 – The Rolling Stones (Extended deadline: April 1st)

Gotta rep for "Undercover of the Night" which still sounds awesome to these ears - crisp and exciting with those lovely falsetto ooh-oohs. Chris Kimsey and the Glimmer Twins really knew how to produce awesome sounding Stones music. I think this is why I am still not sick of "Start Me Up" - it's just such a great sounding song.

Both Undercover and Heartbreaker made my list!

I never took to that early folk side of them--I don't even think I cared for those two songs when I bought Hot Rocks as a teenager. Useless addendum: if memory serves, "Play with Fire" is Metal Mike Saunders' favourite Rolling Stones' song. Not sure what Mick Jagger's favourite Angry Samoans song is.

umm, those were among my early cuts. it's not that i don't like them - i do! - just that i wanted to rep hard for my non-hot rocks favorites. i probably should have saved some love for play with fire, though. used to be so confused by the apparent contradiction in the "owns a block in st. john's wood" line.

Heart of Stone has always been a favorite

those two are crucial early Jagger tracks for me. sort of like what Sympathy for the Devil/Let It Bleed were for the late 60's and Brown Sugar/Miss You for the 70's (I know that is chronologically flawed)

He really threw himself into his delivery in those songs, they have a real theatrical quality that I love

their Route 66 is one of my favorite things in life

I regret not giving the deep cuts on the albums I own on vinyl more of a listen (I never wear headphones when listening to LPs so they can blur compared to what I've got on CD), but with the Stones its easy to find 20 classics even if you haven't dragged the well.

ballot's nearing completion & I notice that evidently I'm quite a fan of the songs that get blasted as misogynist, which I think isn't an entirely fair description but I prefer Mick's more acidic & focused lyrics, & I think women bring that out best.

sorta agree with da croup on this one, though the the first 30 seconds are imo as powerful and ominous as anything they've done incl the intro to "gimme shelter."

I don't mean Landing On Water is a genuine triumph, I just love how it sounds like an alternate reality where Crispin Glover played Crockett on Miami Vice.

the Booming Gated Drums of Dirty Work don't sound like LAW or Never Let Me Down's or other purported period catastrophes, in part b/c Charlie isn't drumming for almost half the record (one of the Nevilles and Ronnie do the honors). It's what tiggers like Steve Lilywhite do best.
