hov lane
pound the alarm

add starships (daleplay remix) between pound the alarm + va va voom, and yes this is the perfect tracklist

nowadays suckers seem to be so fucking naïve (uberweiss), Saturday, 31 March 2012 00:13 (1 year ago) Permalink

every song with "roman" in the title can fuck off imo

Eisbaerg Slim (some dude), Saturday, 31 March 2012 03:13 (1 year ago) Permalink

also lol at "beez in the trap" apparently being in the amazing unimpeachable half of the album, maybe i don't need to hear this

Eisbaerg Slim (some dude), Saturday, 31 March 2012 03:15 (1 year ago) Permalink

the track she did at the grammy's sounds muuuuuch better on the album... really cool drums and she pulls off the chorus really well. it's prob one of the best few songs on the album.

J0rdan S., Saturday, 31 March 2012 03:18 (1 year ago) Permalink

cant stand the chorus personally :/

dayo, Saturday, 31 March 2012 03:22 (1 year ago) Permalink

still diggin beez in the trap

dayo, Saturday, 31 March 2012 03:23 (1 year ago) Permalink

"beez in the trap" kinda grew on me... it's being overrated as the best song on the album but the beat is pretty hot

J0rdan S., Saturday, 31 March 2012 03:24 (1 year ago) Permalink

yeah the beat is what makes it

dayo, Saturday, 31 March 2012 03:26 (1 year ago) Permalink

like a really good album would be like the the 3 good songs from Pink Friday, 8 good songs from this, then like "Itty Piggy," "Beam Me Up" and that all-Nicki mix of "Monster" that someone made.

The fact that she couldnt even get a jay-z cameo for a song called Hov Lane

Caramanica wrote a piece on nicki for the nyt

D-40, Sunday, 1 April 2012 04:32 (1 year ago) Permalink

is it good? what does it say?

Eisbaerg Slim (some dude), Sunday, 1 April 2012 11:20 (1 year ago) Permalink

it's caramanica so i assume it's not good

don'tcha just love how people who spend half their time snarking on artists or writers or whatever suddenly get pissy when someone snarks on someone they like

THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Sunday, 1 April 2012 17:41 (1 year ago) Permalink

lex hadn't you like not even heard of caramanica until he wrote positively of drake a year ago or something? if you're gonna not know shit then just not know shit and shut up about it.

Eisbaerg Slim (some dude), Sunday, 1 April 2012 17:46 (1 year ago) Permalink

um, you are incorrect.

lex pretend, Sunday, 1 April 2012 18:32 (1 year ago) Permalink

there are several writers whose thoughts on nicki minaj i'd be very interested to read, caramanica is certainly not one of them.

lex pretend, Sunday, 1 April 2012 18:34 (1 year ago) Permalink

we all know what you're proud to not hear and not read. i think i'd like to take up my own not-experiencing-things diet starting with those types of lex posts.

Eisbaerg Slim (some dude), Sunday, 1 April 2012 18:39 (1 year ago) Permalink

why would i be interested to read something by someone who's never written anything i've enjoyed reading?

lex pretend, Sunday, 1 April 2012 18:45 (1 year ago) Permalink

idk, you read ilx threads

J0rdan S., Sunday, 1 April 2012 18:46 (1 year ago) Permalink

it's not as though deej provided a particularly compelling explanation of why we should read it

lex pretend, Sunday, 1 April 2012 18:46 (1 year ago) Permalink

deej has a weird thing about giving us a heads up anytime caramanica or nabisco publishes anything, idgi but that's neither here nor there

Eisbaerg Slim (some dude), Sunday, 1 April 2012 18:51 (1 year ago) Permalink

i like the inadvertent trolling of azealia banks by spending multiple paragraphs talking about how she follows in the footsteps of minaj

J0rdan S., Sunday, 1 April 2012 20:00 (1 year ago) Permalink

sorta think that piece is all over the place

J0rdan S., Sunday, 1 April 2012 20:05 (1 year ago) Permalink

yeah but I suspect that's the point? Sunday "think piece" about some female rappers for the Upper East Side crowd.

Um. Gun Shot is the absolute most wonderful thing. Displacing this as my summer jam will be tricky.

you have a weird thing about calling out people's 'weird things' as if they're actually weird at all, instead of a giant article in the paper of record on the main artist discussed in this thread

D-40, Sunday, 1 April 2012 23:46 (1 year ago) Permalink

i thought the piece was in parts good & in parts way too into the idea that drake is vexing hip hop w/ his take on gender relations rather than really just adopting them for a more middle class template

agreed abt the trolling of azealia banks, though

D-40, Sunday, 1 April 2012 23:47 (1 year ago) Permalink

i meant mainly that just mentioning an article, without linking it OR saying anything substantive about it, is a weird thing to do repeatedly

"Traditionally, hip-hop has had such a judgmental spirit. But Wayne made a rock album, and Kanye named an album '808s & Heartbreak' and sang all over it. I feel artists like us are setting a new tone and making new rules here."

i really love "whip it"

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 16:38 (1 year ago) Permalink

you might like cassie's "fuck u silly", which is what "whip it" was before nicki exhumed it to serve evil instead of good

lex pretend, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 18:39 (1 year ago) Permalink

Reloaded = worst sequenced CD ever? "Starships" has really grown on me (in fact, I think I love it) but after four RedOne productions in a row, I'm like "plz kill me now".

Jeff W, Thursday, 5 April 2012 11:29 (1 year ago) Permalink

I sort of feel this album may have been more defensible had she done an I Am/Sasha Fierce and formalised its split personality.

The first three tracks on this are astonishing but even the rest of the rap section can't keep up the momentum. Really not that bothered about Beez In The Trap, she can't really do slower and sparser.

The second half is mostly useless, you've got to admire these dudes for their ability to make awesome female MCs over house music seem like a terrible idea. I wish she'd found a better use for those rapidfire raygun noises on Pound The Alarm, but good god certainly not the chorus of Pound The Alarm. Otherwise, it's not that the sugary stuff can't work (Super Bass ffs) but here it just doesn't.

Gun Shots > anything on the first half though, but then I will happily take dancehall Nicki over all other Nickis. It reminds me a bit of Lazar Morgan's One By One, that whole 80s yacht dancehall vibe. Shame no one actually gave it a proper dancehall beat, even a gentle one, but I guess a suitable remix will be along sooner rather than later.
