why is "doot doot (heartbreaker)" so bad and hated? all-time for the keyboard work alone.

I love it, personally, it's such a groove. I pissed myself laughing when I found a live bootleg where Mick introduces it, talking really fast, as 'this one's called ... Doo-Doo-Doo Doo-Doo'

And those horns!

Ismael Klata, Friday, 30 March 2012 21:33 (twelve years ago) link

pretty amazing version after mick has his larf

tylerw, Friday, 30 March 2012 21:39 (twelve years ago) link

based on comments itt i gotta stand up and say:
• "i got the blues" is classic for the horns alone
• "love is a bed for the blues" is as good a lyric as rock music has to offer
• and by the time it all comes together around the 3:00 mark I believe every word Jagger's corny english ass is saying. fake it so real.

Sent! Was easier than I thought, but could have been 30-40 songs too.

okay, folks, i tried with those post-undercover tracks, really i did. no go. won't trash anything in detail or by name, but not for me.

Gotta rep for "Undercover of the Night" which still sounds awesome to these ears - crisp and exciting with those lovely falsetto ooh-oohs. Chris Kimsey and the Glimmer Twins really knew how to produce awesome sounding Stones music. I think this is why I am still not sick of "Start Me Up" - it's just such a great sounding song.

Kent Burt, Saturday, 31 March 2012 14:05 (twelve years ago) link

Both Undercover and Heartbreaker made my list!

broom air, Saturday, 31 March 2012 15:04 (twelve years ago) link

"Heartbreaker" (sorry, DOO-DOO-DOO-DOO-DOO) made mine, "Undercover" nearly did.

everyone voted for Heart Of Stone and Play With Fire, right?

gospodin simmel, Saturday, 31 March 2012 15:51 (twelve years ago) link

I never took to that early folk side of them--I don't even think I cared for those two songs when I bought Hot Rocks as a teenager. Useless addendum: if memory serves, "Play with Fire" is Metal Mike Saunders' favourite Rolling Stones' song. Not sure what Mick Jagger's favourite Angry Samoans song is.

clemenza, Saturday, 31 March 2012 16:09 (twelve years ago) link

Heart of Stone was one of my last cuts :(

umm, those were among my early cuts. it's not that i don't like them - i do! - just that i wanted to rep hard for my non-hot rocks favorites. i probably should have saved some love for play with fire, though. used to be so confused by the apparent contradiction in the "owns a block in st. john's wood" line.

Yeah, neither of those made my list!

broom air, Saturday, 31 March 2012 17:15 (twelve years ago) link

Heart of Stone has always been a favorite

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 31 March 2012 17:18 (twelve years ago) link

those two are crucial early Jagger tracks for me. sort of like what Sympathy for the Devil/Let It Bleed were for the late 60's and Brown Sugar/Miss You for the 70's (I know that is chronologically flawed)

gospodin simmel, Saturday, 31 March 2012 17:27 (twelve years ago) link

He really threw himself into his delivery in those songs, they have a real theatrical quality that I love

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 31 March 2012 17:33 (twelve years ago) link

Just submitted! Almost forgot!

yay this poll is gonna be the BEST EVER

awright croup!

speaking of early covers I love their "Cry to Me."

"She Said Yeah" is fierce

enjoying Steel Wheels a lot as I write fwiw

Euler, Saturday, 31 March 2012 17:39 (twelve years ago) link

their Route 66 is one of my favorite things in life

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 31 March 2012 17:41 (twelve years ago) link

I regret not giving the deep cuts on the albums I own on vinyl more of a listen (I never wear headphones when listening to LPs so they can blur compared to what I've got on CD), but with the Stones its easy to find 20 classics even if you haven't dragged the well.

da croupier, Saturday, 31 March 2012 17:43 (twelve years ago) link

for sure

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 31 March 2012 17:48 (twelve years ago) link

OK I sent my ballot

ranking the 20 was surprisingly easy

Flat Of NAGLs (sleeve), Saturday, 31 March 2012 18:36 (twelve years ago) link

ballot's nearing completion & I notice that evidently I'm quite a fan of the songs that get blasted as misogynist, which I think isn't an entirely fair description but I prefer Mick's more acidic & focused lyrics, & I think women bring that out best.

Euler, Saturday, 31 March 2012 18:42 (twelve years ago) link

I know I already linked up thread, but on that point there's some good discussion here: what is sexist exactly about the rolling stones' under my thumb?

no thread for "some girls" tho

good man, wonder how many we've got so far?

If anyone has lists longer than 1-20, when we get to posting our ballots please include your also-rans! I want any and all ILM deep cuts!

Iago Galdston, Saturday, 31 March 2012 20:28 (twelve years ago) link

I'm very proud of my iconoclastic ballot; I'm pretty sure that today they're my 20 favorite Stone ballads.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 31 March 2012 20:29 (twelve years ago) link

er, songs. Ballads too!

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 31 March 2012 20:29 (twelve years ago) link

haha. #1 on Alfred's ballot - "Out of Tears"

tylerw, Saturday, 31 March 2012 20:31 (twelve years ago) link

^^^ forgot that one! It's not bad.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 31 March 2012 20:32 (twelve years ago) link

i can kind of remember how it goes.

tylerw, Saturday, 31 March 2012 20:38 (twelve years ago) link

"worried about you" is still the late-stones ballad champ, but "out of tears" ain't bad

"Out of Tears" is lovely. Alfred and I will have terse words if he voted for "Streets of Love" though
