xpost: sorry I didnt mean to imply there is a pile on now, merely wondered aloud if it could not start. but I dont wanna play threadcop, so don't mind me.

I think I've finally learned how to "read" Morbs. His appreciation for Michael O'Donoghue is a pretty decent decoder ring, I find. The only thing I frown upon is his occasional personal attacks, but I'm to the point where I generally find him fun if a little OTT in his bone-dry sardonicism.

I refuse to take personal attacks srsly on a goddamn comedy film poll thread, largely because I am reserving the right to call everyone on ilx filth eating scum if/when Napoleon dynamite places

tbh if the choice was between dr. morbius and an ilx full of the innocuous, indistinguishable, hand-holding nonentities with twee display names of the sort that have come and gone in droves over the last 11 years without inducing one tiny lol in my bitter old soul, i'd choose that irascible crank every time.

Also I feel like reading morbs through the lens of a more arch Alex in NYC helps quite a bit.

Note: I don't read the politics thread if that's the other one in contention

it's easy to say stuff online and be the person you wish you were irl

maybe some of us don't need to do that and don't understand the freedom of being able to unleash when you wouldn't normally. yes you can judge someone's online behaviour as unpleasant or offensive or whatever. but 9 times out of 10 that behaviour does not translate into irl because it takes a lot more inner asshattery to say those things to someones face. and I don't think most ilxors, even morbs, have the kind of inner asshat necessary for that kind of irl behaviour. maybe that's me being naive, but I like to think it's true.

personally i'd like to meet Morbs in real life. I'm pretty sure we'd get along just fine.

I'd do you one better and (in the spirit of VG's post) say that ILX is pretty damn lucky that it's managed, by and large, to avoid the honest to god damaged, ugly souls that run rampant throughout the rest of the internet.

I am admittedly vicious when I feel I have been pricked, but then I never claimed to be more than a lousy Christian.

It was at some patio in NYC w laurel and ally and vic? Plus others and there were vague attempts made to make it to a boredoms show but instead my (future) wife and I got shithoused and ended up walking back to park slope for like 5 hours totally lost. Either that or some other nice dude in NYC is prob still confused as to why some hammered asshole kept referring to him as dr. Morbius every so often in a bar, which is more possible than I would like to admit.

Oh I think tehresa was there as well but i am as always an unreliable witness.

morbs is way too defiantly consistent to feel toxic or negative to me; if i get insulted by morbs for making light of bob hope i don't feel shocked and betrayed any more than he does. when he stalks out of a thread it might feel more like Drama if he ever made any attempt to convince anyone he won't be back+welcomed after lunch. sometimes shtick shades into real fighting but that happens with almost every person on this board/planet. plus (as horrified as he'd profess to be to be lumped with a josie-voter) we share several comedy ballot picks and a last name.

Just as Triumph the Insult Comic Dog != Robert Smigel, I'm pretty confident that "Dr. Morbius" != Bi11 W3b3r. I wkiw Morbs anytime I visit NYC. Frankly I wish he would post more/longer on movies as I think he has real insights that we don't get to see, and he may be an even bigger Spielberg stan than I am.

Dr. Morbius ramps up the snippy, mean, name-calling, insulting posts.
People get annoyed and call him out (or he gets SBed).
If he's still around, he makes some self-effacing comments but never actually apologizes or acknowledges being a utter jerk.
Everybody falls all over themselves to pat Morbs on the head reassuringly and talk about how much they love his irascible on-line persona or how he's actually different IRL.
