m@tt fwiw the distribution of track votes is so broad that your ballot really will make a difference.

ok y'all i'll try to do one :)

by the way just because ppl are talking about the Stones, I URGE you all to track down "The True Adventures of The Rolling Stones" by Stanley Booth which I just re-read again and I think the greatest book about rock music ever written. He's with the Stones on the whole tour that culminates in Altamont. It's just brilliant writing -- in some ways, he's a less gonzo Hunter S Thompson -- but yeah if you want the Stones as the real actual human beings they were not the myth, it's just amazing and chilling in parts....serves as bit of an elegy for an entire era....

also the paperback I have has THE BEST passive/aggressive back cover blurb:

Mick Jagger on books about the Rolling Stones - "I suppose Stanley Booth's might be somewhat interesting. At the very least, I knew Stanley Booth, and he knew me."

also, King Crimson just opened for you and blew the nonexistent roof off the joint

I will definitely hunt down that book, it sounds great. I've heard someone else talk about it on another ilx thread maybe?

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:35 (twelve years ago) link

Almost forgot, the just-released Ft. Worth '78 show is great, too.

Dancing with Mr. T (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:39 (twelve years ago) link

yeah brussels affair is the best stones boot, that perth one is great too. lotsa stuff from 72-73 is killer. also one from Leeds 71 is sweet

I loaded down a lot of shows a couple of years back including that lot. I burned them onto CDs for my car. Great times.

About a week later I had to drive my (much) younger cousin on a long trip up the country. I happened to have Amy Winehouse's Back to Black on the stereo when I picked him up. He was sniggering at me for it, then with a flourish produced Beggar's Banquet, and was all 'time to put on some real music'. I could've let him know that if he lifted the Back to Black case he could take his pick from the half-dozen awesome boots that he'd never heard of, but I got a kick out of letting him think he was converting the square.

In retrospect it was definitely time to pull rank though.

xp At the time, I preferred Keith's singing to Mick's. But that was mainly because Mick had just put out those two crappy solo records ("Let's Work" was on MTV far more frequently than it had any right to be, which is to say, more than once), and the way he sang "competition" in "Winning Ugly" made me think, that guy there, if he doesn't stop it, man...

Can't say I envy Jagger there, prime target having to try to keep all that together (but I do really like that take of Under My Thumb, despite everything)

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 21:36 (twelve years ago) link

Relistened to Talk Is Cheap tooling around town at lunchtime. Good shit.

"bitch" is the 2nd to last song

you mean #1 BEST SONG!

I decided not to vote for it

hate myself, tbh

THOSE HORNS

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 21:39 (twelve years ago) link

Not sure if I'll go as far back as the 70s on my ballot, but if I do Bitch certainly has a chance of making it.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 21:42 (twelve years ago) link

*shakes head* I may never understand

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 21:42 (twelve years ago) link

ie "not going back as far as the 70's"

feel a lot worse about cutting ruby tuesday and paint it black than bitch or brown sugar tbh.

(sentences like that, btw, are what make this poll so awesome/nutso)

melanie kinda ruined ruby tuesday for me

I hated cutting "Bitch," it was one of the last to go, but I rationalized that "Stray Cat Blues" and a couple of others would maintain the sleaze factor of my ballot.

always seemed like one of the weaker tracks on Sticky Fingers imho. (the other being the execrable I Got the Blues)

m@tt otm that one week is a really agonizingly short amount of time to contemplate catalogs this huge and rich. but then anytime someone gives a poll a 2 or 3 week window people freak out about how they won't get to do their Letter To Cleo tracks poll until November.

― some dude, Wednesday, March 28, 2012

fwiw if the ILX Poll Gods see fit I have no issue with extending the polling period. just had the impression we're trying to keep things tight.

what more do you want? it has everything a person could ask for aside from a new pair of balls

also: fantastic Charlie drumming (love when he switches to using the hi-hat) and the best enunciation of "Pavlov dog" in rock history.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 23:33 (twelve years ago) link

^^ "pavlov dog" and charlie's turnaround are actually the only things that gave me a half-second's hesitation about cutting it loose

I'm okay w/extending the deadline. It'll give me some needed prep time for my Kinks poll.

I Got the Blues weak? uhhhhhhhhhh no.

Bitch is fat, nasty and rockin. Huge horn section, super groovy bassline...it's the shit, shakey!

i have voted

what a world

mookieproof, Thursday, 29 March 2012 01:24 (twelve years ago) link

No objection here to extending balloting -- I hope it results in more votes! It's impossible to know if there are many ilxors out there who were on the fence about voting if only they had more time.

Whiney Houson (WmC), Thursday, 29 March 2012 01:36 (twelve years ago) link

i for one am in no rush to stop re-listening pre-vote. i go in cycles of bingeing on bands and the stones' turn came right on time

Iago Galdston, Thursday, 29 March 2012 02:10 (twelve years ago) link

i'm skeptical that a deadline will prevent ppl from voting -- i suspect it's more the scope of the task/decisions

mookieproof, Thursday, 29 March 2012 02:13 (twelve years ago) link

i'm down for extending the listening party for an extra two days, with ballots due the same time on Sunday, April 1. i'd still be able to roll out results on the same calendar.
