^ naughty diplo!
― Valéry Giscard d'Staind (NickB), Monday, 26 March 2012 16:19 (twelve years ago) link
shocked, simply SHOCKED that diplo might've lifted a beat
― Lil T the Bowed Jet (forksclovetofu), Monday, 26 March 2012 16:38 (twelve years ago) link
It's drumline. It all sounds vaguely the same.
― hot and brothered (Eric H.), Monday, 26 March 2012 16:47 (twelve years ago) link
nah
― 40oz of tears (Jordan), Monday, 26 March 2012 16:59 (twelve years ago) link
oh come on, AB's entire steez is to rap over other people's music
― THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Monday, 26 March 2012 17:02 (twelve years ago) link
(that was to Eric)
can't believe diplo's in the dock
― A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Monday, 26 March 2012 17:06 (twelve years ago) link
Yeah, but "stealing" drum cadences? Is this high school state competition?
― hot and brothered (Eric H.), Monday, 26 March 2012 17:16 (twelve years ago) link
(Was in HS drumline, tho, so I'm sort of predisposed toward liking anything with that as a backing track.)
― hot and brothered (Eric H.), Monday, 26 March 2012 17:17 (twelve years ago) link
liking/disliking has nothing to do with whether one is a direct lift of the other!
― THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Monday, 26 March 2012 17:18 (twelve years ago) link
Don't I know it.
― hot and brothered (Eric H.), Monday, 26 March 2012 17:19 (twelve years ago) link
seven years after "bucky done gun" people are surprised by diplo jacking a beat?
― lex pretend, Monday, 26 March 2012 17:19 (twelve years ago) link
it's not about copying a rhythm, he pretty clearly jacked someone else's whole recording (which probably used drum sounds from a sample pack, but still) and barely even changed it.
― 40oz of tears (Jordan), Monday, 26 March 2012 17:20 (twelve years ago) link
Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby" defense just leaped to mind
"the Queen song goes 'dun-dun-dun-dududun-dun/dun-dun-dun-dududun-dun', but MY song goes 'dun-dun-dun-dududun-dun/DUN-dun-dun-dun-dududun-dun', it's completely different"

― lag∞n, Monday, 26 March 2012 17:41 (twelve years ago) link
its a nearly exact copy while at the same time being incredibly generic, in conclusion the guy prob deserved it
― lag∞n, Monday, 26 March 2012 17:42 (twelve years ago) link
yo can't copyright no beats man
― internet somebody (some dude), Monday, 26 March 2012 17:42 (twelve years ago) link
but im giving it a new name --diplo
― lag∞n, Monday, 26 March 2012 17:45 (twelve years ago) link
but you can copyright sound recordings, right? although like i said, these drums are probably from some royalty-free commercial sample pack.
way cooler to record your own drumline samples imo.
― 40oz of tears (Jordan), Monday, 26 March 2012 17:48 (twelve years ago) link
i was just quoting flav man
obv if you're using the same master recording there's a legal issue that wouldn't exist if you're just emulating
― internet somebody (some dude), Monday, 26 March 2012 17:50 (twelve years ago) link
i have been told BY THE INTERNET so it is true that this is from a pile of beats diplo gave AB to freestyle over when he was getting to know her, was not intended for mass consumption necessarily
― Lil T the Bowed Jet (forksclovetofu), Monday, 26 March 2012 20:05 (twelve years ago) link
with people e-mailing tracks back and forth and posting them to soundcloud as soon as they're done etc. honestly this kind of thing is just going to inevitably become more and more common. but again diplo has done very little to make people not assume the worst when there's any confusion about authorship in things with his name on it.
― internet somebody (some dude), Monday, 26 March 2012 20:25 (twelve years ago) link
had high hopes for Azealia, but I haven't really dug any of her shit aside from "212". actually, her Interpol cover isn't bad either.
― UnderControl, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 00:55 (twelve years ago) link
i quite dislike her. the guntalk on this record is not very becoming, and as brainwasher pointed out to me, its odd for someone to diss nicki minaj on twitter than bite her style from a few years back so completely
― D-40, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 07:51 (twelve years ago) link
Huh, that's surprising
― Lil T the Bowed Jet (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 11:40 (twelve years ago) link
More and more I am realizing that "212" was a brilliant fluke
― Joan Cusack clumsily running into a water fountain (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 12:11 (twelve years ago) link
she is someone we've been aware of for like, all of what, five months? let's...... relax
maybe nothing will be as great as "212" but then again, to my mind that's a very high bar anyway
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 13:49 (twelve years ago) link
I don't get the adulation tbh. I don't think she's terrible but the only thing I find really distinctive or interesting about her is that she said "cunt" 5000 times in "212".
― THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 13:50 (twelve years ago) link
Guys I read recently that in Jamaica producers reuse each others' beats all the time but that it's ok because its is a culturally acceptable practice and the beats are called "riddims."

remember how really pissed off everybody got when it was discovered that 'umbrella' was using a standard garage band drum loop
oh wait

that's umber-ella iirc

"we" is the overwhelming majority of people who know her for that one song, not people who have a global radar for every potty mouth female rapper on the planet earth

amazing compliment, i feel very proud of that :D

well regardless i think my point stands, which is that the weather is fine and life is too nice to worry about the relative quality of post-212 azealia banks releases in the second quarter of 2012
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 15:49 (twelve years ago) link
I didn't really understand the big excitement about that song anyway. ILM loves sass I guess.

Diplo admits it tho:
https://twitter.com/#!/diplo/status/184132935182594048
which I suppose means dj-master d is getting credit for it. And Azealia Banks just hired Diplo (which I assume isn't cheap) just so he could show her one song he's been listening to for her to rap on top.

someone my fb feed posted that azaelia banks is the "Uffie of rap"
― dayo, Sunday, 15 April 2012 19:28 (twelve years ago) link
