if they don't call this film "TEENAGE MUTANT HERO TURTLES" in the UK, well, fuck off

Bo Jackson Overture (King Boy Pato), Thursday, 22 March 2012 10:42 (twelve years ago) link

The UK title was always more sensible. If they were meant to legitimately be ninjas, they did a pretty shitty job of it.

AnnieHalldonia (Deric W. Haircare), Thursday, 22 March 2012 12:40 (twelve years ago) link

in the Mirage stuff?

┗|∵|┓ (sic), Thursday, 22 March 2012 12:45 (twelve years ago) link

The original movie has ninja in the title in the UK iirc

Number None, Thursday, 22 March 2012 12:48 (twelve years ago) link

Well, in the early Mirage issues, our band of turtle warriors were much more faithful in their adherence to the ancient art of ninjitsu, but in subsequent appearances, they simply employed a number of martial arts techniques against their increasingly-bizarre rogues gallery, without much of an attempt at achieving or maintaining ninjitsu's trademark aura of invisibility. If I were given the opportunity to speak to the foursome, I would ask them to reconsider the cavalier usage of the word 'ninja' in their self-styled nomenclature.

That should all be read in the voice of Kip from Napoleon Dynamite, btw.

Foot soldiers were changes from humans to robots in the cartoon. I'm sure there was pre-internet fan backlash then.

NES version was great except for that one level where you had to defuse the underwater bombs. prob among my most frustrating childhood experiences.

truth bomb

i have never known or even heard of anyone who has seen that game beyond that point.

goole, Thursday, 22 March 2012 15:21 (twelve years ago) link

I beat that game after a month of playing nothing but that underwater level

IIRC, you are rewarded with another underwater level

goole, Thursday, 22 March 2012 15:28 (twelve years ago) link

That underwater level is a cakewalk compared to the Technodrome. That game is brutal.

Vanilla Ice super OTM about this

I've had a few people on Facebook going absolutely bonkers over this (in a bad way), and it's crazy. The last TMNT movie got awful reviews and the franchise has always been commercial as hell so what's the problem?

frogbs, Thursday, 22 March 2012 20:53 (twelve years ago) link

what if they were frogs

I just hope they make April O'Neil super hot, both movie versions were kinda meh.

I didnt even fuck with the first NES game; I went straight to the second one, which was an adaptation of the (first) arcade game...

waiting in the shadow of the Big Gulp (loves laboured breathing), Friday, 23 March 2012 12:52 (twelve years ago) link

the first NES game is like stockholm syndrome for a whole generation of children

Nhex, Friday, 23 March 2012 16:23 (twelve years ago) link

It's got great music, absolutely horrible controls. If you lose Donatello/Leonardo you may as well hit reset. The underwater level gave me strife as a kid but i think after 4 or 5 tries I figured it out and it's actually pretty easy to beat once you get through it. Wading through the relentless respawning armies in the following stage, however...

^i played through this game so many times

40oz of tears (Jordan), Friday, 23 March 2012 16:44 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, it's really the first sewer/city level that's the worst

this is coming from someone who was readily able to beat the speeder stage in Battletoads

Nhex, Friday, 23 March 2012 16:51 (twelve years ago) link

I salute you. That thing destroyed me

Number None, Friday, 23 March 2012 16:53 (twelve years ago) link

This is like the zenith of bad remakes

Raymond Cummings, Friday, 23 March 2012 16:57 (twelve years ago) link

Wow @ speeder stage in Battletoads. You are a god among men.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 23 March 2012 17:03 (twelve years ago) link

my memory of being a kid reading Nintendo Power is that every other issue was about Battletoads (and the rest were inexplicably about Star Tropics)

Maybe this 300 page TMNT graphic novel I have from 88 will finally be worth something.

calstars, Friday, 23 March 2012 18:08 (twelve years ago) link

i wonder if this is the reason for all the tmnt references on tv shows l8ly

Lamp, Friday, 23 March 2012 20:03 (twelve years ago) link

no thats because tmnt is a permanent part of the pop culture zeitgeist

♆ (gr8080), Friday, 23 March 2012 21:00 (twelve years ago) link

oh man i had the sickest vocal sample of krang shrieking SHREEEEEEDDDDDERRRR that i used to loop over synth-y noize tracks o i hope i still have it

see?

♆ (gr8080), Friday, 23 March 2012 21:08 (twelve years ago) link

i have to say tho that the cartoon and the snes game is probably a much bigger part of my pop culture zeitgeist than the og movies as much as i enjoy 'turtles in time'
