Everyone in the Seven Kingdoms is excited about the NFL playoffs.

The wildlings and the men of the Night's Watch and even some northmen are all pulling for the Giants, of course. But in the Vale of Arryn and the Mountains of the Moon, they're Falcons fans.

The Lannisters are cheering on Detroit, even if the lion is the wrong color, but some of the smallfolk of Lannisport on its western bay are fond of those 49ers. The High Septon and all the septa and septons and devout of the realm are for the Saints.

The butchers and tanners of King's Landing and Oldtown are behind the Packers, the smiths and armorers are with the Steelers. At the Citadel of Oldtown, the archmaesters and the Conclave are all about the Ravens, but across the narrow sea the khals and Dothraki horselords are screaming and whistling for the Broncos. In Volantis, the tigers are Bengals backers; the elephants are rooting for whoever plays the Bengals.

Nobody anywhere knows what a 'Texan' is, but a few Dornishmen might support them anyway, just to be perverse.

One commonality unites all the Seven Kingdoms, and the lands beyond. Everyone everywhere hates the Patriots, and Evil Little Bill.

I had no idea Bronn was in Robson & Jerome until now, I never heard their music but I remember the NME and Melody Maker hating them sooo much.

But just 10 days after moving, Dinklage was back in Brooklyn, playing a “bitchy barista” in “A Case of You,” a small-budget romantic comedy written by his friend, the actor (and “I’m a Mac” pitchman) Justin Long.

i would love to see this

Somewhat scathing review in the New York Times still considers this a show for Dungeons and Dragons fans and no one else.

seriously though: critics disparaging the show for plotting missteps and tone apparently have no interest in taking a look at the source material at all?
there's a lot of "man they killed ned, what a disaster for hbo" and my understanding is that uh like everybody dies on this fucking show

1 week to "Charles Dingus" (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 29 March 2012 20:27 (twelve years ago) link

seems like for season one that almost astonishingly neatly every 100 pages of the first book equaled one episode. so i assume same holds true for season two?

1 week to "Charles Dingus" (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 29 March 2012 20:28 (twelve years ago) link

y'know what else had a ton of characters and no real central figure? The Wire

Number None, Thursday, 29 March 2012 20:28 (twelve years ago) link

according to the article ned linked dinklage is signed on for SIX seasons...there are only five completed books, and grrm doesn't show any signs that he is hurrying to finish the books.

humba (NZA), Thursday, 29 March 2012 20:31 (twelve years ago) link

soooo i guess that means they will eventually get off the 1 book/1 season wagon?

humba (NZA), Thursday, 29 March 2012 20:32 (twelve years ago) link

they're going to have to do book three over two seasons definitely

Number None, Thursday, 29 March 2012 20:32 (twelve years ago) link

Last season critics only got four episodes as well, as the reviews were decent but not terribly enthusiastic, basically saying the exact same thing (too many characters, too much exposition, not enough to latch onto) but by Episode 6 it was all coming together a treat and it just sort of barrelled beautifully towards the finale.

It also seems to miss the point of Ned's arc. It was really shocking for me when it happened, but the best thing about it (and this is similar to Boardwalk Empire last season) is that when you look back, it makes total sense. Ned was honest and noble and very likeable and human and the audience could really latch onto him, but for all those reasons he was terrible at the politics and died for it. It would seem ridiculous to expect someone else to take up the "good guy main character" mantle.

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Thursday, 29 March 2012 20:33 (twelve years ago) link

I think they'd be lucky to get 5 seasons out of this. It's hugely expensive and even as it is a pretty decent hit I'm not sure it can sustain. I seem to recall an interview with the creators who were asked about catching up with the books, and they said they had consulted with GRRM and they have an outline of how it all ends.

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Thursday, 29 March 2012 20:34 (twelve years ago) link

then again creators swearing they have an ending is always suspect these days

1 week to "Charles Dingus" (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 29 March 2012 20:34 (twelve years ago) link

but there's no way they could do the ending on the show before the books finish. there'd be a nerd uprising

Number None, Thursday, 29 March 2012 20:36 (twelve years ago) link

re: staying power - i guess we'll know how popular this show is based on the season 2 premiere numbers and that's likely to sway how long they keep the thing going. If it gets sopranos numbers, i imagine it'll be on for ten years.

1 week to "Charles Dingus" (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 29 March 2012 20:36 (twelve years ago) link

If this season is a solid improvement ratings wise and that holds up for the rest of the seasons there's no way HBO won't greenlight it through the end. That's a given unless public interest suddenly plummets.
