Micheal, I trusted you with Transformers. I trust you with this.

lololol

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 21:08 (1 year ago) Permalink

Here's the thing. I don't get it when "creatives" take any property with an existing fanbase and make a project with alterations sufficient to a) piss off said fanbase and b) make one wonder why the "creatives" didn't just create their own, completely different thing. Like, I don't get it from a business standpoint, even. If you're banking on brand recognition, why make the brand less recognizable than necessary?

Soggy Cheeseburgers (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 21:15 (1 year ago) Permalink

I guess Transformers is as good a response to my bafflement as any. "Fuck the fanbase: fans of shitty blockbusters are drawn to spectacle, not adherence to pre-existing continuity."

But who cares enough abt TMNT to get mad?

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 21:19 (1 year ago) Permalink

Again, though (debating myself here): if Bay had just made a big, dumb movie about random robots fighting, people probably still would've swarmed to see it, and the studio wouldn't have owed a dime to the Transformers rights-holders.

Soggy Cheeseburgers (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 21:20 (1 year ago) Permalink

You'd probably be surprised, VG.

It seems from personal exp that TMNT was a p big deal for people 5 or so years younger than me

I will cop to liking the cartoon and the movie in early high school....but I also wanted to marry Rikki Rockett and wore neon everything so things change.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 22:40 (1 year ago) Permalink

I vividly recall a friend introducing me to the (second-gen, kiddie friendly) TMNT comics.
He basically turned into Milhouse. "It's great -- these turtles are really kickass at ninja-fighting and they have a mentor who's a rat and they eat pizza ALL THE TIME!"

Why on earth was April O'Neil's always dressed in a yellow jumpsuit anyways? Wasn't she a journalist?
(Uh, oh my -- image-googlers be warned: turns out there's a pornographer by that name. Not to mention that a lot of people apparently have felt the urge to draw her being banged by the teenage mutant herpes turtles)

Øystein, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 22:56 (1 year ago) Permalink

I think April wore that cos she was so sexy they had to put her in the least flattering costume ever. And she was still bangin'.

I discovered TMNT one day in Elementary school when some kid had a bunch of action figures. The first two movies are really fun to watch. The first one, in particular, is pretty dark and gritty. The cartoon was a staple of my Sat. mornings and the arcade games are some of the coolest licensed games ever.

The CGI movie was pretty fun, good times. Don't understand why they are going live action rather than CGI cos frankly you can't top the turtles from the first movie.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 23:04 (1 year ago) Permalink

Also someone who think Bay is sodomizing the franchise must not be aware of "Ninja Rap", the third film, the TV show with the lady ninja turtle, or the Coming Out Of Their Shells musical tour.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 23:06 (1 year ago) Permalink

One other point about the upcoming movie: the OG creators were never sticklers about cross-media (or even cross-book) continuity. Like, there are easily a half dozen variants of the origin story, for example. But none of those veered as far afield as Bay's proposed vision.

Also, for those who didn't know, the TMNT are owned by Nickelodeon now, not Eastman & Laird. Which may go some way towards explaining why (wrt this particular instance, anyway) Bay just don't give a fuck.

Soggy Cheeseburgers (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 23:08 (1 year ago) Permalink

People crying about the Bay-ificsation of TMNT have apparently forgotten about this abomination...

Ninja Turtles, cartoon on, was never a high-quality piece of thoughtful entertainment (I never read the original comics of it). It's really irritating to me that kids are being marketed the same things their parents were 20-30 years ago. Maybe this trend's gone on for a long time but I never noticed it. Today's children need their own pile of singular inane, commercialized shit to cherish.

I pretty much deny all knowledge of the turtles after the first movie

and even the live turtles in the first movie were a liiiiiiiiiiittle creepy

more fun as a cartoon imo

You had a cameo in the second Ninja Turtles film in the '90s. Would you consider appearing on the soundtrack for Michael Bay's Turtles reboot?

I hope so. I don't have anything in writing, but you never know (lifts his pant leg to reveal a Ninja Turtles tattoo). I'm a Turtle fan.

1 month passes...

The Hollywood Reporter has broken word that the upcoming, live action, big screen reboot of the popular characters has been shut down, with Paramount pulling the plug and laying off the Vancouver based staff who had already been hard at work on pre-production. At issue, apparently, is a script that the studio had no confidence in.

polyphonic, Friday, 15 June 2012 19:29 (11 months ago) Permalink

re: that Vanilla Ice cameo in that second movie

In middle school, some sort of schoolyard fight broke (though I don't recall it getting too violent -- may have just been an intense showdown) and I led a chant of "Go Ninja, go Ninja, Go!" that caught on with the group that was circled around watching the fight.

The more worrying thing is the idea that for all other Michael Bay films, there was a script that the studio did have confidence in....

My guess is there just weren't as many marketing tie-ins available for the premise

Nhex, Saturday, 16 June 2012 17:25 (11 months ago) Permalink

Bay prob didn't articulate that you can tell the turtles apart by which color headbands its wearing, thus children will, indeed, need to buy four different turtle toys at every opportunity

Cunga, Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:12 (11 months ago) Permalink

ha... well, I mean in comparison to say, the car stuff in Transformers or Bad Boys, much better sponsorships than Hasbro

Nhex, Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:24 (11 months ago) Permalink

True, although the piazza sponsorship deal could be huge. Ive dedicated my diet to pizza probably because of the turtles.

Cunga, Saturday, 16 June 2012 21:32 (11 months ago) Permalink
