of course MTV was the major labels' bitch all through the 'alternative nation' era but i mean they didn't NEED to put "Zombie" in the buzz bin to justify playing it around the clock, they were already a huge band, what does 'buzz bin' even mean if it's not about new acts?

They'd run the little "clouds" bumper that said Breakthrough Video and you'd be like "Oh, I wonder what groundbreaking video I'm getting?" and after about the 50th time, it was usually just "Black or White" or something.

that was a p amazing video tho

it's possible that including Strong second-album songs from White Zombie and Cranberries helps strenghten the credibility of 'the Buzz Bin'; maybe the process works both ways--MTV gives hot new bands exposure who then lend cred to 'return the favor'*

* - I'm p unhappy with how imprecise 'who then lend cred to return the favor' sounds to me, but I really have nothing atm. I get what you mean, ship, and it's probably on some 'give the kids what they want' tip, but it's possible that a bombastic U2-style antiwar anthem was enough of a gamechanger for Dolores & co. to qualify for the 'Buzz Bin'

danzig all the way. sorry radiohead. cracker i have on a 10" single, white zombie track is ok, hated everything else at the time and imagine i still would. Would rather listen to herbie hancock than a sample of his, sorry guys.
Cranberries even worse than filter.

if you removed the samples you'd end up with something suspiciously similar to an Infectious Grooves album

("Soul-Crusher" is pretty good though, at least up until the vocals come in and the music gets all boring again)

During my freshman year of college, the guys in the dorm room next to mine blasted "Zombie" constantly. It was an inauspicious intro to higher education.

i actually like "zombie". i guess that's the heretic's stance, which makes sense. it's got terrible, cringe-inducing lyrics, but the rush i get off the chorus is so massive that i don't really care. do wish it were about brain-eating instead.

Breakthrough Video of Radiohead's "Just" was how I got into that band. (Also some of the great S Jonze videos--Buddy Holly, I think, Wax's California--were BT Videos)

I know that you're probably going to read a lot of "...and that's BAD" into that, but it's actually a value-neutral description of how a band like the Cranberries winds up in the buzz bin. label submits video for consideration in Buzz Bin, has a guy specifically working the track for that purpose, Buzz Bin's a proven moneymaker. MTV has meetings, programmers say "dude at Cranberries label has been calling me all week, says this is a priority." video goes in buzz bin, feels like a good fit in an era of occasional feel-good alt-political anthems, what the hell, everybody loves U2, these guys are Irish too, meeting wraps early let's all get fucked up

iirc those world premieres were once a month at most & carried throughout the following two weeks - they didn't have bunches & bunches of big premieres, those were giant acts only ("Jamie's Got A Gun" was one of them, hard night here in the camp) weren't they? "The whole 'buzz bin' idea of featuring up-and-comers" is something you accept, when that's not actually the idea, the idea is developing a market & forging an identity (I want to say "corporate identity," but you're incapable of reading that without thinking I am thereby saying something bad about corporations). This isn't a "hobby horse" of any kind; it's just how the business actually works. Your questions kind of answer themselves here ("it's not even a "the nominee for Best New Artist is on their second album" thing, it's more like "the nominee for Best New Artist is on their second platinum album") but don't take it from me, talk to other people who actually know lawyers & execs who worked closely with MTV at the time. no he's not, he's right. he's just talking sense. "buzz bin" has no intrinsic meaning. MTV developed the phrase as a branding device to generate an exciting frisson of value-added *newness*, but once established, they could use it to add that quality to less than totally novel offerings. no surprise, just good business.

Let's all just agree that nothing MTV labeled as 'alternative' or 'buzzworthy' post-'93 (to be super liberal with the date) was a particularly buzzworthy alternative to anything else they aired.
