bush released at least one other good song and it was called "swallowed"

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 15:22 (twelve years ago) link

lol no it wasn't

thuggish ruggish Brahms (DJP), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 15:22 (twelve years ago) link

unless there's some other completely song called "Swallowed" that I don't know about

thuggish ruggish Brahms (DJP), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 15:22 (twelve years ago) link

i heard "Swallowed" on the radio last week and it really is a raft of shit even in the context of their catalog

some dude, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 15:23 (twelve years ago) link

my pencil box in 5th grade had "Buzz Clips Rule" written on it, so I think I would know

That's hilarious and amazing.

Soggy Cheeseburgers (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 15:27 (twelve years ago) link

regardless of how i feel about "swallowed" (great swampy barely-written un-song) i related to my coworker the very otm "everything zen" statement and he told me he spent st. patrick's day with friends rocking out to bush and jumping up and down, which angered the landlord. "it was the most caucasian thing in which i have taken part, i think"

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 15:35 (twelve years ago) link

'Swallowed' is probably like 'My Humps' in that it would probably work much better with the vocals extracted altogether.

Soggy Cheeseburgers (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 15:42 (twelve years ago) link

it always confused me when they put pretty established bands in 'the buzz bin.' like, White Zombie had been platinum for a while before "More Human," Cranberries were multiplatinum before "Zombie"

I have no idea what that image is actually about btw but I love it a whole whole lot

Had White Zombie really been platinum before Astro-Creep?

"my lovely lady lumps" >>>>>>>> everything Bush recorded

thuggish ruggish Brahms (DJP), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 15:46 (twelve years ago) link

La Sexorcisto went double-platinum but I don't know when that was certified

thuggish ruggish Brahms (DJP), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 15:47 (twelve years ago) link

I like the first 5 Bush singles pretty well, although I hated them when they were out.

lag∞na beach: the real ∞range c∞unty (beachville), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 15:47 (twelve years ago) link

La Sexorcisto was released in '92, went gold in '93, went platinum in '94, and double platinum in '98 (Astro-Creep dropped in '95)

some dude, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 15:48 (twelve years ago) link

of course MTV was the major labels' bitch all through the 'alternative nation' era but i mean they didn't NEED to put "Zombie" in the buzz bin to justify playing it around the clock, they were already a huge band, what does 'buzz bin' even mean if it's not about new acts?

some dude, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 15:50 (twelve years ago) link

I’m starting to remember keeping myself willfully ignorant of White Zombie as a teenager because I understood them to be some kind of half-assed Ministry rip-off.

what does 'buzz bin' even mean if it's not about new acts?

helping the labels expand an existing band's demographic & keeping the most lucrative target market at the forefront of the marketing push imo

then you heard Filth Pig and realized no ripoff could possibly be worse, right

i don't really understand what whiney or aero is saying

some dude, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 15:55 (twelve years ago) link

They should really have compiled all the Breakthrough Videos.

i mean i get what aero thinks is a truth bomb but is actually trite and totally beside the point of what i was saying (xpost)

They'd run the little "clouds" bumper that said Breakthrough Video and you'd be like "Oh, I wonder what groundbreaking video I'm getting?" and after about the 50th time, it was usually just "Black or White" or something.

lag∞na beach: the real ∞range c∞unty (beachville), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 16:01 (twelve years ago) link

that was a p amazing video tho

ffun. (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 16:02 (twelve years ago) link

it's possible that including Strong second-album songs from White Zombie and Cranberries helps strenghten the credibility of 'the Buzz Bin'; maybe the process works both ways--MTV gives hot new bands exposure who then lend cred to 'return the favor'*

xp to some dude

waiting in the shadow of the Big Gulp (loves laboured breathing), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 16:02 (twelve years ago) link

There's an awful lot of hair on these bands.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 16:04 (twelve years ago) link

* - I'm p unhappy with how imprecise 'who then lend cred to return the favor' sounds to me, but I really have nothing atm. I get what you mean, ship, and it's probably on some 'give the kids what they want' tip, but it's possible that a bombastic U2-style antiwar anthem was enough of a gamechanger for Dolores & co. to qualify for the 'Buzz Bin'

waiting in the shadow of the Big Gulp (loves laboured breathing), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 16:06 (twelve years ago) link

Zombie was the second single released from the 2nd album iirc...? Or maybe not?

ok wiki says nope

danzig all the way. sorry radiohead. cracker i have on a 10" single, white zombie track is ok, hated everything else at the time and imagine i still would. Would rather listen to herbie hancock than a sample of his, sorry guys.
Cranberries even worse than filter.

actually i dunno the dave matthews (does anyone outside north america?) but it cannot be worse than Zombie (nothing is)

only breakthrough video i remember offhand is "virtual insanity"

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 16:31 (twelve years ago) link

xp: I think we need to poll that, Herman.

lag∞na beach: the real ∞range c∞unty (beachville), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 16:32 (twelve years ago) link

while More Human is great it's a huge dropoff in quality from the bizarro fuck-rock schtick White Zombie'd been working for the two or three years before that

I'm listening to La Sexorcisto right now and really couldn't disagree with this statement more

if you removed the samples you'd end up with something suspiciously similar to an Infectious Grooves album

thuggish ruggish Brahms (DJP), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 16:33 (twelve years ago) link

("Soul-Crusher" is pretty good though, at least up until the vocals come in and the music gets all boring again)

thuggish ruggish Brahms (DJP), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 16:35 (twelve years ago) link

lol okay the music became unboring after a while

thuggish ruggish Brahms (DJP), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 16:38 (twelve years ago) link

Danzig, White Zombie a close second.

xps
i dont think a poll is needed to decide Zombie is the worst song ever. It just IS

fuck deathcore and metalcore (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 16:44 (twelve years ago) link

During my freshman year of college, the guys in the dorm room next to mine blasted "Zombie" constantly. It was an inauspicious intro to higher education.

Moodles, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 16:46 (twelve years ago) link

i actually like "zombie". i guess that's the heretic's stance, which makes sense. it's got terrible, cringe-inducing lyrics, but the rush i get off the chorus is so massive that i don't really care. do wish it were about brain-eating instead.

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 16:50 (twelve years ago) link

Breakthrough Video of Radiohead's "Just" was how I got into that band. (Also some of the great S Jonze videos--Buddy Holly, I think, Wax's California--were BT Videos)

Also: No Rain/Low >>>> Mother/More Human than Human. But I still voted Hey Jealousy.

I can't really understand what she's saying, sounds like it's better to remain ignorant. I find the song tolerable...

skip, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 17:29 (twelve years ago) link

Another head hangs lowly,
Child is slowly taken.
And the violence caused such silence,
Who are we mistaken?

But you see, it's not me, it's not my family.
In your head, in your head they are fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are crying...

In your head, in your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie,
Hey, hey, hey. What's in your head,
In your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie?
Hey, hey, hey, hey, oh, dou, dou, dou, dou, dou...

Another mother's breakin',
Heart is taking over.
When the vi'lence causes silence,
We must be mistaken.

It's the same old theme since nineteen-sixteen.
In your head, in your head they're still fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are dying...

In your head, in your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie,
Hey, hey, hey. What's in your head,
In your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie?
Hey, hey, hey, hey, oh, oh, oh,
Oh, oh, oh, oh, hey, oh, ya, ya-a...
