No mention itt for Hugo yet? Watching this on Blu-Ray and for the first ten minutes I was worried my color settings got all jacked up and permanently set to "t&o".

It was fairly overpowering, even my missus who just shrugs when I go on about it commented on it. What I don't get is how someone like Scorsese falls for it. I can understand some young directors and DPs thinking this is a good look but someone with his experience and knowledge of cinema shouldn't fall for it. The scenes with the the flower seller could have been some gorgeous technicolor dream but instead were just this mush of t&o.

it was fairly obviously done to evoke two-strip technicolor of the period, which could range in color depending on how the film was exposed but was basically teal & brownish orange:

scorsese did something similar with The Aviator:

maybe you still dont like it, but people are acting like he's mindlessly aping michael bay and thats not really accurate at all

yeah that drove a guy i know insane. the red stop light being orange basically ruined the movie for him

WheatusVEVO (Hungry4Ass), Thursday, 16 August 2012 04:20 (9 months ago) Permalink

i think drive's an instructive example though because, i mean, it's a very nicely shot film. it looks really good! the lighting is great, composition, all that jazz. it has a limited color palette but it's not ugly. it actually uses color pretty intelligently, to say something about the characters. i mean i get that everyone has little things that irrationally bug them, i have my own trends that im sick of, but you still gotta look at the big picture imo

WheatusVEVO (Hungry4Ass), Thursday, 16 August 2012 04:42 (9 months ago) Permalink

it's funny i don't recall any of those shots looking like that. shit is ~subliminal~

goole, Thursday, 16 August 2012 05:18 (9 months ago) Permalink

i almost never notice it while im watching a movie - it really stands out in screenshots

also - so much orange and teal in Hugo - completely unforgivable for that kind of film. Maybe I wouldn't have found it so disappointing had it not had that in it.

got around to seeing Just Go With It, and as someone previously said itt, it's perhaps the all-time T&O champ.

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 17 August 2012 06:13 (9 months ago) Permalink

Constant Gardner was very t&o. After I noticed it, the deliberate changes really stood out. Like they obviously painted walls and dressed the sets with t&o props to make it all conform. Which actually looked a lot better than some of these more recent movies that are just aggressively graded that way. But it's still dumb as hell.

wk, Friday, 17 August 2012 06:24 (9 months ago) Permalink

This is far more teal than it is orange. I think I prefer it when it's the other way around, if we have to have it at all.
