maya jane coles has completely passed me by in that i know she's been getting big but i've somehow managed never to hear anything she's done, whether dj sets or productions (until her new dj kicks mix)
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 00:19 (1 year ago) Permalink
Also I wasn't accusing you personally of being a new jack, Rev, DJ Q's rep has exploded in general over about the last 6 months in particular.
really? i totally haven't noticed this. you're probably right but who are you actually referring to? other DJs or critics? if the latter i've been trying to pay less attention generally

Getting more play in a variety of DJ sets in a variety of (obv really close together) genres, getting lots of critical attention (including stuff like doing DJ mixes for magazines), tunes seeming to get a (relatively) high sales results on juno etc, releases on more critically respectable labels...

Maya Jane Coles is really good mostly!
Lex I think you would like her release as Nocturnal Sunshine, "Can't Hide The Way I Feel". It's a lot like Damu.

how the fuck did i miss "what they say"? so incredible
i say i missed it, i totally recognise it, but i didn't realise what it was til now
― lex pretend, Thursday, 22 March 2012 08:21 (1 year ago) Permalink
lol "what they say" is TWO years old o_0
― lex pretend, Thursday, 22 March 2012 08:34 (1 year ago) Permalink
It's one of those tracks that's totally easy to miss in that way because it sort of feels like it's been around for ever and is not in fact the product of a particular individual, just a structurally necessary moment in the mix.

Not a DJ Q ish tune but I love this Maya track "Senseless":

I'm sure it's worth the money! It's more that ordering CDs seems so.. anachronistic. But I will do it.

can anyone clarify this... are "rocky" and "will i ever be free" the same track?
― The Reverend, Saturday, 24 March 2012 18:47 (1 year ago) Permalink
Nah, just vaugly simular like a lot of bassline. Rocky has more Rocky & Baby giggles innit.
― jimitheexploder, Saturday, 24 March 2012 20:48 (1 year ago) Permalink
ok, i hadn't heard "rocky". i was just asking cause when i d/led "all junglist", it had "will i ever be free" as its b-side
― The Reverend, Saturday, 24 March 2012 21:00 (1 year ago) Permalink
They seemed to swap tracks sometime. Thought we were gettin 'Will I Evere Be Free' too but then got the promo with 'Rocky' in it instead.
DJ Q is a don at the moment. Too much fun.

the shape of things seems to be "older" well-loved male DJs seen off in favour of B.Traits and a 21-year-old named Yasmin from Manchester who may be great for all i know but appears to have 0 following

1xtra as breeding ground for r1 was a great move but this is just throwing the baby out with the bathwater
fucking "simulcasts", pure hack n slash costcutting masked as brand integration & streamlined unity of purpose

yeah i can't think 1Xtra feels too great now about being 1's "sister station"

I like the throwback postbassline mix for playing in the car. I'm less sure about the other, but I need to give it a driving listen as well. I generally like what's happening with the beats in this stuff but the vocal part of it is usually more iffy for me (though I generally like the distortion they are put through). I had just been playing Tropical 2, one my of my main rainy day driving choices, in the car, before I saw this thread yesterday, so that was the context. I still prefer that to just about any of this related stuff. Would love to have more in that precise vein.

Really enjoying the Mixmag one a lot more this morning. I think my response to this music is particularly mood dependent at this point. Maybe that will change with more exposure.

Some unexepcted choices but endless props until the rapture for putting "U & I" at number 3.
Also further endless props for saying of that Shola Ama Dreem Teem remix (which I'm not sure I've heard? Same with his number one. Don't mean to brag but that's unusual w/r/t me and 2-step): "“I’ll never forget this track. Complex simplicity!"
