Hey Janet!

I am a "DJ" and, as I've stated on many occasions, I think Dredd is a fantastic "DJ"! I used to enjoy seeing him at Aroma very much, and I'd love for Uncle Q's Living Room to find a new home. I think the Prince Dance party is marginally more tired than Mousetrap (also a tired night) because it's revolved around a single artist for the past, what, six or so years? Is it possible to go out and hear the same set of songs by the same person for that long and have fun? As evidence by his parties, of course it is! Does that keep the event from getting tired? Of course not!

It's easy to see the difference between what he does and what most of the other "DJ"s at the Cat do, because most of the "DJ"s at the Cat are for shit and base their nights on a marginally different kind of nostalgia than Dredd.

Also, I am not his accountant or manager but thanks for asking! LOL!

I DIED, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 15:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Brian I respect your opinion, but we just have to agree to disagree or whatever. Like I said I am glad the Prince party is at the black cat because it brings in a more diverse crowd than the usual wanna be fake hipsters (like myself) that sit around the red room talking shit.

Neither of us are really in the position to judge because we are obviously both wrong because these dance parties (mousetrap, prince, etc. )at the cat are always packed.

I am still curious to know why you would say that Dredd only does these parties to keep his restaurant afloat? He must make a ton of money on these things because I know what it takes to keep a restaurant open and I just can't believe that. Maybe you know something that I don't. What are these DJs making on these kind of parties? Enough to pay a lease, pay salaries, utilities, etc on a restaurant? Damn I am in the wrong business.

Please let me know where you spin at so me and my "hipster" friends can check you out.

Cheers.
JM

janet must, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 17:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Janet,

I didn't say he only does them to keep his restaurant afloat, I was mentioning them in relation to Vegetate as a substantial income stream for him at a time before they had their liquor license at Vegetate and were far from busy.

I'll invite you and your "hipster" friends to see me "DJ" at my next night but in general I aim for a crowd that listens to more contemporary music.

I DIED, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 17:51 (seventeen years ago) link

but wat if they are contemporary indie fuxx? :D

pretzel walrus, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 17:55 (seventeen years ago) link

You jaded ilx guys are so mean! You need to encourage the indie-only hipsters to stretch out. Today Prince, tomorrow, maybe she'll be ready for [insert fave Cologne or Baltimore or wherever contemporary club item here]!!!

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 18:33 (seventeen years ago) link

hey steve i wasn't being mean! i'm a contemporary indie fuck!

pretzel walrus, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 18:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Nope, you saw that Ethiopian musician a long while back, so you're disqualified from membership in the indie club. What were you thinking?

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 18:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Alright, we'll let Brian define "contemporary"

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 18:42 (seventeen years ago) link

anything released in the last 12 minutes

Is it a secret?

janet must, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 20:45 (seventeen years ago) link

[the suspense builds]

curmudgeon, Thursday, 5 April 2007 13:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Brian must be over on the DC thread on ILE, or just busy elsewhere. Brian, I guess you let the S.A.L.T. (sad and lonely )blog die.

On a different subject, big Trans Am profile in the Post Weekend section today. These guys are no longer based in DC, they're all over the world--one is in New Zealand where they recorded their most recent cd.

curmudgeon, Friday, 6 April 2007 13:42 (seventeen years ago) link

I still haven't read that violinist by the L'enfant metro station story inn the Sunday Post magazine that has a thread of its own.

Chris Richards big-ups the Critical Condition go-go band in the Post today.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 16:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Now I'm even wondering if Brian's gonna be doing any more dj'ing out and about in DC anytime soon. Maybe outside a Metro station?

curmudgeon, Thursday, 12 April 2007 16:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh boy, Eric Hilton from Thievery Co. is opening another club, "Marvin". I think he and Joe Englert are gonna compete for most clubs. Speaking of Marvin, though the tv guide said a Ray Charles concert would be on, the Howard public tv channel aired a Marvin Gaye 1980 show from Montreaux instead last night. I watched some and taped the rest. Marvin and band were awesome some of the time, and rushed through songs perfunctorily other times. Plenty of annoying fundraising pitches interupted the show.

curmudgeon, Sunday, 15 April 2007 19:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I gotta get Critical Condition doing Green Day "I Walk Alone" go-go style. The P.A. palace has it.

curmudgeon, Sunday, 15 April 2007 19:53 (seventeen years ago) link

that dcsoul recordings guy is doing the below(and I missed it) and I think the MoreBetterMan, an old school DC soul dj and host, was appearing somewhere last night. Or that's what I thought I heard on PFW.

Those folks also do "Heat" on the second Thursday at Saint Ex.

Lots of folks seem to peruse the District Soul chatboard, but not many post there (kinda like here!). They have a thread on or by that Dc soul recordings guy (who has updated his site with lots of great photos of old DC funk bands (dcsoulrecordings.com)

curmudgeon, Sunday, 15 April 2007 20:17 (seventeen years ago) link

curmudgeon, Monday, 16 April 2007 13:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Chuck Brown's got a new Chucky Thompson produced studio cd coming out. It will be his first studio cd in ages. Chucky has worked with Mary J Blige among others.

Anybody heard Chris Richards and Dava Nada (the Bullets) dj?

Haven't heard them live but the Rubber Bullets Critical Condition mixtape is great. Was Richards talking about "Classy" by CCB? That song should, by all rights, be the go-go song to crossover. Incredibly catchy summer jam.

Ben Boyerrr, Monday, 16 April 2007 14:26 (seventeen years ago) link

(Curmudgeon if you find that CCB/Green Day thing shoot a D.C.-ex-pat-living-overseas an email!)

Ben Boyerrr, Monday, 16 April 2007 14:27 (seventeen years ago) link

He did mention "Classy." If I find the CCB/Green Day cover I'll let you know.

curmudgeon, Monday, 16 April 2007 14:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Thievery Corp are gonna co-headline a show with Manu Chao at Merriwether Post. I did not realize they were that big in popularity.

I still have not ordered those CCB go-go discs. Soon.

Two DC Blues and R&B legends: Have Passed:
Little Sonny Warner
Jesse James (Jesse James & the Raiders)

Heywood 'Little Sonny' Warner passed on Friday, April 13, 2007
The Falls Church native was a valet for Lloyd Price for a time and then as a teenager joined Big Jay McNeely on the stage at the legendary Evan's Grille in Forestville. Not long after that Sonny joined Big Jay on the West Coast where he was the honker's primary vocalist for about four years, making musical history on McNeely's classic original, "There is something on Your Mind," a classic covered and reworked by such other singers as Bobby Marchan, James Cotton, Little Johnny Taylor and others over the years. The original recording was a gold record which was literally split between Big Jay & Little Sonny. Sonny's main influence is Ray Charles and some of Sonny's vocals on the Big Jay "Live at Birdland" (Seattle) recording show this side of his music the best. After leaving Big Jay in the late fifties he returned to the DC area and was a regular part of the area's scene making a few more recordings including a soulful "Bellbottom Blues," and always had a mix of music from his time with Big Jay, from Brother Ray's songbook as well as more recent stuff in his repertoire. He played the DC Blues Festival several times, was regularly featured until a few years ago at Lamont's and the late Marcia Selko reunited Big Jay & Sonny at a Hot August Blues in the mid-90s, the only time the two ever shared the stage since Sonny had left Jay four decades earlier.

Awww man, I do not think I ever saw Little Sonny Warner though I think I wrote a citylight on him once.

I did see Jesse James and the Raiders once. Not bad. I think Jesse was living in Baltimore recently. Farewell.

Hey, what's going on. This is the first time I've posted here......my name is Kevin Coombe and I run the dcsoulrecordings.com website. Noticed that you had mentioned the new Moneytown night in your threads above, and wanted to give you the details for the next wild funk dance party!

Kevin, your dcsoulrecordings website is great. That dance party thing sound good also.

As for a different genre thing, does anyone here know anything about those mostly local rock bands that took part in the 6 Points Music fest?

curmudgeon, Monday, 23 April 2007 13:40 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm...not crazy about most of them

pretzel walrus, Monday, 23 April 2007 13:42 (seventeen years ago) link

I was trying to figure out if my lack of interest in hearing most of them was just my being jaded (and other warning signs like certain local labels and clubs I respect not taking part in the fest). Your take confirms my doubts about most of those bands.

curmudgeon, Monday, 23 April 2007 15:45 (seventeen years ago) link

it's the Artomatic of music festivals

I DIED, Monday, 23 April 2007 18:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Speaking of Artomatic they're having bands performing on some nights (maybe djs too?). None of 'em immediately caught my eye.

Anybody thinking of checking out the Garland of Hours cd release show?

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 04:22 (sixteen years ago) link

I've never seen Amy D. of Garland play cello live, but they're likely to come on late at Black Cat and old man me might be too tired for that(especially since I gotta get up at dawn tomorrow).

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 13:59 (sixteen years ago) link

Watched my kid at a school recital, did grocery shopping, and went home but did not go see Garland of Hours? Anybody go?

So I am on the Take Me Out to the Go-go mailing list. Wow, there are still so many go-go shows. 30 years on. Incredible.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 13:12 (sixteen years ago) link

Sigh.

curmudgeon, Friday, 18 May 2007 21:51 (sixteen years ago) link

i read your babbling dude!

pretzel walrus, Friday, 18 May 2007 22:27 (sixteen years ago) link

i'd post here more but most of my contributions would be bitter sniping at mediocre/terrible local bands

pretzel walrus, Friday, 18 May 2007 22:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Who writes about local bands worth checking out? Your bandmate at Going Out Gurus? Blogs I do not know about?

So did anybody join Wonkette and hordes of others at the $10 lets you see art and photos you could otherwise see for free at the Hirshhorn? You can buy beer too I hear and they had a NY dj...The Tillmans photo exhibit sounds like it might be worth seeing.

Jeff Nelson's new Toledo band (with some goofy name) just got an A in the W. Post Sunday Source section.

curmudgeon, Monday, 21 May 2007 11:02 (sixteen years ago) link

the gog blog is all right, but i get the impression my bro's a little restrained by editorial policy.

actually, i did see a pretty rad show @ kansas house in arlington on saturday. the points (caught them w/the black lips a few months ago but didn't really get too much of a chance to listen), and my friend's new band the sons of guns.

sons of guns is dudes from the twats, measles mumps rubella, thee snuff project and another band i can't remember at the moment. they were mostly heavy mid-tempo stoogey groove (really nice motowny bass and swinging drums in particular), sometimes a little more spacemen 3ish but much more anchored. i dug em.

the points were great too - keys/guitar/drums, reminded me of something like times new viking with a more explicitly punk, less indie aesthetic. hip-shakin spiky spiky spiky catchy short songs.

pretzel walrus, Monday, 21 May 2007 15:01 (sixteen years ago) link

from the Post's Nightlife Agenda, this struck me as kind of amazing...

Hip-hop music continues to have a problem with homophobia, from Camron's "No Homo" comments to the endless anti-gay putdowns found on diss records, but you'd never know it from tonight's Black Pride party. Chart-topping rapper/producer Unk's gonna "Walk It Out" as part of Strictly Hip-Hop With a Twist, the annual Black Pride hip-hop club night at the 9:30 club. In addition to Unk's 2-Steppin', the place will be filled with male go-go dancers. There's a $25 cover at the door.

I DIED, Thursday, 24 May 2007 17:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Shhhhh, don't tell Unk or others about the sponsor.
