I'm sure there's talk about "Deep In The Valley" somewhere upthread, "banger" is right.

"Spoons" is very lovely though, yes, hadn't heard it before now.

Rudimental seemed to be threatening to switch to dubstep for a moment there, it wasn't a very good look for them. I hope this means they've come to their senses.

The fact that funky these days often seems to sound either like EBTG's Temperamental or Darqwan circa 2002 is kinda indicative. It's like, the faultline that ran along the genre for its entire golden era finally split apart.

Lex I think you would really like this Gorgon City EP:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSP-aCkwEcc&feature=relmfu

All three tracks are insane and utterly different from one another.

Tim F, Friday, 16 March 2012 20:25 (twelve years ago) link

(the Kidnap Kid EP also on Black Butter is amazing also, but I probably wouldn't describe it as uk funky - more of a post Joy Orbison shuffly house kind of thing I guess)

Tim F, Friday, 16 March 2012 20:31 (twelve years ago) link

^Thanks for the heads-up on Spoons and the Gorgon City EP folks. Rubi Dan & Navigator over The Crypt sound great.

Fairly confident that it won't be everyone's cup of tea, but Spray That by DJ Tazer is a bit of a personal fave at the momement - 3rd track on the Avalanche EP, here:

Do you mean the Royal Rumble EP?

Coz yeah "Royal Rumble" and "Warrior" are respectively the hardest and hugest tunes ever.

One of the saddest things for me is being Facebook friends with Scotty D, whose work was so hard to follow in his crucial 2008 - 2009 period, and now he posts a DJ mix every couple of days it seems and releases EPs and the like and it's all deep house or tech-house tunes that are fine enough but could come from anyone.

Tim F, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 22:04 (twelve years ago) link

This from the guy who did "Liberty" and "Dream"! And (I suspect) heaps of other tunes that I only ever heard in the mix, doomed to be forgotten by everyone except me.

Tim F, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 22:05 (twelve years ago) link

oh go on then.

nb. funky still died whenever it was i said it did (the church of rtc officially rebukes all heresiarchs posting since then) but while it doesnt identify as such this is obv the best place for the thing nevertheless - think a more herbiverous andy jay & s-tee

anyway i think we all know anything that has the phrase "SOCA RUMBA FEATURING SLARTA JOHN" needs no further introduction so happy summertime already bitches

^Feeling that Kidnap Kid EP on Black Butter, esp Vehl. Tim I agree with you about the Joy Orbison thing also think Deadboy might be an even closer point of comparison.
The L Phonix & Yllavation was an enjoyable summery listen for me yesterday, wouldn't quite say it was changing my life but yeah, nice. Great to see you back r/t/c obvs.

I had cause (for secret, exciting purposes) to re-upload an MP3 of Mak 10 and Shantie's epochal 26 March 2009 set - so if you don't have it, get on it:

Mr Andy M, Monday, 9 April 2012 22:23 (twelve years ago) link

There's a slight chance I've posted this one before so apologies if so, but feel this will be relevant to the interests of people who post in here.
Whole Sick - Voodoo (Murlo remix), the 2nd tune on this:
http://www.junodownload.com/products/a-little-louder-remixes-ep/1776836-02/

Also Tim, on the subject of Deja sets do you still have any of those old Hard House Banton/Dubplate Wonder shows you talked about on skykicking ages back? Never managed to catch any of them but have always been intriqued.

Mr Andy M, Monday, 9 April 2012 22:27 (twelve years ago) link

Hi Andy, I have a couple, will upload from home.

Do you have Dubplate Wonder's Wonderland 2009 set?

Tim F, Monday, 9 April 2012 22:42 (twelve years ago) link

Nice one :D . Yeah I'm pretty sure I have Wonderland 2009 on the harddrive somewhere, remember listening to it a lot at the time anyway.

Mr Andy M, Monday, 9 April 2012 22:48 (twelve years ago) link

would love to hear a DW set too, missed out on them.

What did he actually release before he disappeared? Obviously there was My Love/Pain 12" and I bought the (excellent) Dubplate Wonderful EP off ukfunky.com before it went down. But I've got a feeling there was more material on that website that I didn't get. Would be up for trades if anyone bagged anything tasty.

A mate sent me some tracks that he bought directly from him a couple of years ago. Turned out to be 160kbps and sound quite shitty but the tunes are good though. They are called '1 drop' 'Waisting time' 'Jump up' and 'mash house'.

Chinatown off the Dubplate Wonderful EP happens to be a lost sino-funky classic btw

TURN IT AROUND

rusty_allen, Thursday, 12 April 2012 05:50 (twelve years ago) link

^^ nevermind...these last few posts made me go back and listen to wonderland 2009 again - utter brilliance, obv - and think about the DW relations with Hard House Banton. in the end, it all goes back at how insanely great 'turn it around' is.

rusty_allen, Thursday, 12 April 2012 05:59 (twelve years ago) link

i know it is the way of the scenius but for someone of wonder's talent (and so fully-formed!) just to apparently vanish actually is upsetting. it would suffice just to know he's alright at this point!

for some reason i always remember that thing you said about wonder's 'riddim box' refix sounding like being chased by a massive moth

("always remember" meaning "have misremembered" most probably)

r|t|c, Thursday, 12 April 2012 13:29 (twelve years ago) link

'sirens' refix, sorry

r|t|c, Thursday, 12 April 2012 13:30 (twelve years ago) link

"a fluttering handclap drum pattern like a moth beating its wings at your ears" actually.

I had to check because describing a track as sounding like being chased by a massive moth would have been surprising even for me.

Tim F, Thursday, 12 April 2012 20:49 (twelve years ago) link

Had a listen to the first of these earlier and yeah, this is a vibe. Feels like a totally different era of the music even though it's less than 4 years ago. Prob the only disappointment for me was that there was less material that was totally new to me than I was expecting/hoping for. Loving all the remixes and VIP-sounding versions of big tunes from that period they play though. Now grabbing the 25th November one.

Mr Andy M, Thursday, 12 April 2012 21:01 (twelve years ago) link

had a listen to that lphonix & yllavation mix i posted for the 67th time and it is still really really really really great fuiud

tsk and now i have to listen to it again damn it

another noble digging sesh aborted for a half hour

r|t|c, Sunday, 15 April 2012 21:07 (twelve years ago) link

it's not really uk funky though is it? (not that i'm even sure what that means any more)

but whatever it is it is epochal, life-changing (etc)

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 18 April 2012 11:07 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, like you say uk funky is an antiquarian pursuit at this point and has been for a while. a great majority of the tracks in the mix would have gotten play in funky sets - but i can see how the mix as a whole might not scan immediately as such (and they themselves wouldn't call themselves that either). think of the fives, fuzzy logik, pioneer, andy jay & s-tee in their less ruffer moments etc
