Mann has been making the same great movie in different iterations since "Thief."

Here's the infamously fascinating New Yorker piece, btw:

And while it's pointless to argue with Morbs ... Morbs, even you have to admire Mann's formal gifts, right? Even if you for some reason disdain his philosophical/thematic stuff? And even then, I can't believe you'd say a bad thing about "The Insider," one of the best movies of the legendary 1999 slate.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 16 March 2012 18:03 (twelve years ago) link

Heat and Collateral are pretty much untouchable. Basically Josh OTM. Even if there are lots of irritating bits or silly soap-ish themes or etc. there are still at least a few amazing redeeming shots and moments which are stone classic.

s.clover, Friday, 16 March 2012 18:22 (twelve years ago) link

Heat is really great. I kind of think he almost gets a lifetime pass for that. But he has made some dire shit, like Last of the Mohicans.

to be fair, consider the source material: http://etext.virginia.edu/railton/projects/rissetto/offense.html

Both of these guys would be satisfied being the cinematic/TV equivalent of Herman Melville, who had a career of duds but also did Moby Dick.

"marvellously inoffensive" (Eazy), Friday, 16 March 2012 18:31 (twelve years ago) link

and you know Bartleby and The Confidence-Man and whatever...

s.clover, Friday, 16 March 2012 18:33 (twelve years ago) link

i think anyone would be satisfied being the herman melville of whatever artistic field

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Friday, 16 March 2012 18:39 (twelve years ago) link

god it would be amazing if "we've been over this" actually resolved conversations on ilx

Mann should stop after "breaks it into pieces."

Last of the Mohicans was all right. His spiffy-looking stuff since then is like liquor ads minus the content.

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Friday, 16 March 2012 18:46 (twelve years ago) link

lol

have you seen the insider tho morbs? it really is terrif.

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Friday, 16 March 2012 18:46 (twelve years ago) link

the Luck opening credits really do look like a liquor ad, kinda turns me off the show

some dude, Friday, 16 March 2012 18:48 (twelve years ago) link

what turns me off is the way they wrap every episode shoot by slitting a horse's throat

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Friday, 16 March 2012 18:50 (twelve years ago) link

u know what turns me on, bathing in horses blood tbqh

lag∞n, Friday, 16 March 2012 18:55 (twelve years ago) link

I prefer going the Full Bathory.

"Last of the Mohicans" may be the only Mann i like exclusively for its formal "Barry Lyndon"-y elements. Also, the fact that they didn't kill people for real in the battle scenes.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 16 March 2012 18:57 (twelve years ago) link

The Godfather could've been better if the beheaded horse had been killed specifically for the production, and footage of the slaying had been integrated into the film

sorry that post was obv meant for the comedy movie poll

This is Luck's precedent, from Mann's side:

mohicans is one of mann's best movies, and better than anything he's done in the last decade

dude is just so f'n luxurious. on the other hand we can probably blame his attention to color and tone for some of the terrible abuses of color grading in the past few years (http://theabyssgazes.blogspot.com/2010/03/teal-and-orange-hollywood-please-stop.html)

s.clover, Friday, 16 March 2012 21:23 (twelve years ago) link

what the... i dont think you can lay that at mann's feet at all!

these pretzels are makeing me horney (Hungry4Ass), Friday, 16 March 2012 21:27 (twelve years ago) link

to the extent that you can lay incoherent cross-cut action sequences at peckinpah's feet or clumsy use of forced perspective at wells' I mean.

s.clover, Friday, 16 March 2012 21:29 (twelve years ago) link

mann didnt popularize 'paying attention to colors'

these pretzels are makeing me horney (Hungry4Ass), Friday, 16 March 2012 21:37 (twelve years ago) link

Don't even think Mann's pallet has been particularly teal and orange, really, unless you count the orange street lights in Collateral.

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Friday, 16 March 2012 21:41 (twelve years ago) link

Mann is all about blue.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 16 March 2012 21:43 (twelve years ago) link

don't think we should go over the teal and orange thing again but I mostly blame Ridley Scott and Gladiator for it.

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Friday, 16 March 2012 21:44 (twelve years ago) link

i mostly blame people for having hearts and eyes and the ability to feel

lag∞n, Friday, 16 March 2012 21:45 (twelve years ago) link

I blame Tony Scott.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 16 March 2012 21:46 (twelve years ago) link

back to Luck, the biggest loss is weekly John Ortiz.

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Friday, 16 March 2012 21:47 (twelve years ago) link

you should blame tony scott! ridley's always used color intelligently eg. the blue and gold contrasting in the lift scene in blade runner

these pretzels are makeing me horney (Hungry4Ass), Friday, 16 March 2012 21:49 (twelve years ago) link

john ortiz is a great actor. mann loves him, so i'm sure he'll turn up in whatever he does next

these pretzels are makeing me horney (Hungry4Ass), Friday, 16 March 2012 21:50 (twelve years ago) link

I wouldn't blame anyone but HBO for the opening credits, given Boardwalk Empire et al.

"marvellously inoffensive" (Eazy), Friday, 16 March 2012 21:50 (twelve years ago) link

on the flipside, GoT
