About 3 years. I'm on 'sabbatical' until I figure out what the next step is gonna be, but it probably won't be in Chicago and it probably won't be boilerplate improv.

Deric, I haven't seen TJ & Dave in a long time, but I feel like their approach is more lived-in and less madcap than some other acts.

Cuba Pudding, Jr. (jaymc), Thursday, 15 March 2012 17:29 (2 years ago) Permalink

Oh, yeah, TJ & Dave is one of the definite exceptions. But then Pasquesi, for instance, is pretty heavily involved in straight theatre.

(Not meant to challenge your general point, btw! Just wondering if you agreed.)

Cuba Pudding, Jr. (jaymc), Thursday, 15 March 2012 17:32 (2 years ago) Permalink

Jet seems pretty funny, but still a little raw if youtube clips are any kind of a good judgement method. I'd love for SNL to bring in Emily Tarver.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 15 March 2012 17:33 (2 years ago) Permalink

every once in a great while SNL does something a little less laff-y. i'm thinking of a skit with maya rudolph and tracy morgan as two run down drunks in a bar that was pretty touching tbh

very much the exception tho

goole, Thursday, 15 March 2012 17:33 (2 years ago) Permalink

I probably haven't seen that Spacek-Belushi sketch in 30 years; it doesn't seem to be online.

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 15 March 2012 17:38 (2 years ago) Permalink

it seems like the only old SNL stuff online is on Hulu, it's not much, but even that's blocked for non-US people

Nah, it's cool, and I really should emphasize how many awesomely talented people there are doing work in that whole arena. I just wish more of them would take a page from TJ & Dave and have the courage to let things breathe and allow for quiet moments and refrain from desperately pouncing on the joke. To be fair, audiences are occasionally awful and implicitly demand less-than-stellar work.

xp it's on Netflix too but not for free

She seems reasonably funny, but all of the impressions they featured in that article were terrible.

i have high hopes for her, based solely on those videos i think she might be able to lighten wiig's workload a bit

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 21:50 (2 years ago) Permalink

I guess most of the lady roles will be Fred Armisen in a wig now?

1 of paper = 4 of coin (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 21:52 (2 years ago) Permalink

Meanwhile, Sudeikis has a new movie in the works, Relanxious, where he will star opposite his real-life love Olivia Wilde.

this is one of the worst movie titles ever btw

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 21:53 (2 years ago) Permalink

that seriously must have been named by sifting through the discard pile in the 30 Rock writing room

God, Music and Romeo and Juliet (DJP), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 21:54 (2 years ago) Permalink

had no idea he was dating Olivia Wilde, dude is lucky

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 21:58 (2 years ago) Permalink

I still appreciate dude as a comic actor, but irl Sudeikis is a dickweed of the highest order. He hops from starlet to starlet after leaving his wife "because he could get hotter chicks".

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 22:04 (2 years ago) Permalink

No results found for "because he could get hotter chicks".

polyphonic, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 22:05 (2 years ago) Permalink

Not a direct quote obvs, but relayed to me through about six degrees of comedians. Actually, disregard. It's probably bullshit.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 22:10 (2 years ago) Permalink

In his Maron interview he came across as very protective of January Jones even though they weren't dating anymore.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 22:14 (2 years ago) Permalink

Really glad that Wiig is finally leaving, but bummed about Samberg and Sudeikis leaving. I know the SNL Digital Shorts have really dipped in quality, but he brought his moments.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 22:21 (2 years ago) Permalink

I'll miss Wiig and Sudeikis. Samberg, not at all.

His wife, the beautiful and hilarious 30 Rock writer Kay Cannon. I mean...come on, dude.

1 of paper = 4 of coin (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 22:22 (2 years ago) Permalink

I'll miss all three to varying degrees. I think Wiig is moving on to bigger and better things and general stardom. I think Sudeikis is fooling himself a little, because I think he's great on SNL and I think it's the perfect venue for him and I think his film trajectory won't be terribly dissimilar to Joe Piscopo's.

1 of paper = 4 of coin (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 22:24 (2 years ago) Permalink

abby elliot may be leaving also depending on if her pilot gets picked up. sudeikis seemed ok on the bs report fwiw, he's norm peterson's nephew iirc.

as Kenny Powers would say, pretty impressive quality of tail this guy manages to pull for a supposed dickweed

kind of amazed armisen's sticking around

y'tulip, y'pea-brained earwig (donna rouge), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 22:27 (2 years ago) Permalink

probably because he had a better grounding in reality than Sudeikis and Samberg and knows he's probably not going to fly any higher than this and Portlandia

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 22:29 (2 years ago) Permalink

Comparing Sudeikis to Piscopo is f'in weird.

Horrible Bosses made 200 mil ww. I don't think Joe Piscopo's combined filmography made that much money.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 22:31 (2 years ago) Permalink

i guess it figures after last year was like the first summer in SNL history with no cast changes that this would be the biggest batch of departures since '94 or '95. Samberg is definitely ready to go, the plethora of non-musica 'digital shorts' has been pretty dire lately.

ferrante's inferranteno (some dude), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 22:34 (2 years ago) Permalink

i really had no idea Horrible Bosses made bank like that, damn.

ferrante's inferranteno (some dude), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 22:35 (2 years ago) Permalink

Sudeikis has been kind of the glue of the show for a while imo, i may actually miss him

ferrante's inferranteno (some dude), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 22:36 (2 years ago) Permalink

Pretty sure I saw Kay Cannon act in plays when she was in college.

even losing his awesome jump on-screen into the running man in What Up With That is :( to me

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 22:39 (2 years ago) Permalink

fwiw sudeikis costarred in a big (awful) hit comedy last year and is somehow at the point where is name is above the title, he's been on snl a few years, and if there was a time to strike while the iron was hot this is it. if his romney was an impersonation ppl talked about and if romney looked like he was going to win i could see an argument for him hanging around but neither's the case. samberg can still do his shorts whenever he wants, has enough of a fanbase w/ lonely island that he doesn't need the show as much as another cast member might, and he's gonna be in an adam sandler movie that will be a big hit so i can see him thinking it's time (fwiw i think i liked hot rod more than bridesmaids and definitely more than horrible bosses). i never understood really why wiig came back this year, unless it was just an issue of timing.

balls, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 22:39 (2 years ago) Permalink

yeah what up with that could survive w/o will forte but no sudeikis would be a bridge too far. it would be awesome if they could get him to come in to just do that the two or three times they do it a season (seems totally doable).

balls, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 22:42 (2 years ago) Permalink

I think they just wanted to go out together as a graduating class, like the last group.

Sudeikis has been on the show for seven years. There are only a handful of people who have done eight or more seasons.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 22:42 (2 years ago) Permalink

Yeah, as much as I may miss any of the folks that leave, I think it'll ultimately be good to shake up the cast a bit. Six of the current cast members (including Seth Meyers) have been around for 5-10 years already.

Most seasons:

Hammond: 14
Franken: 11
Meyers: 11
Meadows: 10
Armisen: 10

who is longest serving cast member? tim meadows? xpost not counting seth meyers or al franken or other guys who were primarily writers but did update or popped up in a sketch from time to time

xpost - of course it was hammond

balls, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 22:47 (2 years ago) Permalink

Meyers is on year 11.

Good catch. Actually, I should've just said "6-11," since none of them (Meyers, Armisen, Thompson, Sudeikis, Samberg, Wiig) debuted later than fall 2005.
