i had an argument about apocalypto at a party with a bunch of drunk classical archaeologists a few days ago. we had to go find a mesoamericanist to answer our questions about human sacrifice. however if he made a movie about vikings i could be THE party expert! I do think it's funny how so many of Mel Gibson's flicks feature him as the (literally) tortured protagonist and then, when he gets a little too old to play the role, he moves behind the camera and hires proxy tortured protagonists. Sort of like Woody Allen and his own alter-ego leads.
Anyway, as a Mayan "First Blood" this wasn't bad.

Similar aesthetics, I thought. Obviously they are stories told from very different perspectives. It's more an atmosphere thing I suppose, and I did also think of Aronofsky's The Fountain too, so it may well be just a matter of them all being set in the jungle!
