Mind Taker has posted a bunch of amazing songs in the Eastern European Chart Music thread but this is particularly good.

no, it would have to be a band that people would plausibly choose to listen to in 2012

o god i love that song
― surm, Friday, 16 March 2012 15:57 (1 year ago) Permalink
like a lot. it was also the victoria's secret campaign song.
yeah the victoria's secret thing was the song's big mainstream breakthrough but i think it's been in a ton of shows and stuff since then, gets a lot of airplay on alt-rock radio too
― some dude, Friday, 16 March 2012 16:07 (1 year ago) Permalink
The gay dance station here has been giving it blanket play for like 2 months at least.

btw, i finally figured out what that song i like that i hear on the radio all the time but i could never make out the lyrics to google them cause she has horrible diction is:
― The Reverend, Friday, 16 March 2012 18:18 (1 year ago) Permalink
isn't that song forever old? maybe it isn't, i haven't really payed her any attn. what is the expiration date for songs to become hits in america after they've already done their thing overseas? like a year?
― teledyldonix, Friday, 16 March 2012 22:31 (1 year ago) Permalink
i was also wondering about midnight city. i heard it in commercials and stuff but that was a while ago. i also heard it on an alternative station a few days ago so i guess its airplay must be picking up -- it still isn't selling super well, at least as far as i can tell, so airplay is probably the only way it could have debuted all the way up at 74.
― teledyldonix, Friday, 16 March 2012 22:35 (1 year ago) Permalink
the reason for Midnight City entering the Billboard Hot 100 is the inclusion of streaming data (plays on Spotify and the like) in the chart tracings as of this week.
from Billboard.com (not sure I can make the link, hmmm...):"Other notable titles on the On-Demand Songs chart that are outperforming their sales rankings and airplay placements on the Hot 100's main component charts (Digital Songs and Radio Songs) include Tyga's "Rack City," Big Sean's "Dance (A$$)" and Avicii's "Levels." The addition of streaming data to the Hot 100 thusly boosts these songs' standings on that chart, as evidenced by the No. 15 rank for Tyga (instead of No. 18), the No. 40 rank for Big Sean (instead of No. 52) and the No. 66 rank for Avicii (instead of No. 80). Moreover, artists such as M83 at No. 74 (with "Midnight City"), and Skrillex at No. 83 (with "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites"), debut and re-enter, respectively, on the Hot 100 primarily due to the influx of data from the newly incorporated streaming services. Also, a prior established hit, "You Da One" by Rihanna (No. 31 on On-Demand Songs), moves 97-76 on this week's Hot 100, whereas it would have fallen off the chart if the list's methodology had not been changed."

make that "chart rankings"...so who knows, if you play your favorite song on endless repeat on Spotify (US), it might actually end up in the Hot 100...

ha, i would like to see what billboard's internal threshold for when something would get flagged on suspicion of hacking is

thank you! that's very cool, had no idea billboard had started incorporating new data. the article also says drake/rihanna's "take care" wouldn't have been in the top 10 this week without it (even though it is top 5 in airplay), so evidently this is making quite a difference (as opposed to when they started incorporating only aol/yahoo music streams or something like that, which barely did anything afaik)

the reverence that some rap fans give j. cole as a REAL LYRICIST is still hilarious and kinda bizarre to me but dude puts out pretty consistently enjoyable pop singles

the chorus of "turn me on" sounds like chipmunks screaming as they're disemboweled, 'drab' is not really the word i'd use for it
jord is otm all the way on j. cole though, "nobody's perfect" is a great radio jam, "who dat" and "workout" aight too

Best Ester Dean performance is still the first thing I ever heard her on, Gucci Mane's White Girl. WELL MY NAME IS SUSIE AND GUCCI THINK I LOVE HIM / THAT SUCKA THINK I'M LOYAL BUT I FUX WITH ALL THE HUSTLAS. She's so in-your-face grating and obnoxious on it and it totally works cuz she's rapping as the personification of cocaine
