it makes me think of Prince less than 80% of his material but he definitely wrote it in part because he couldn't write another song called "Adore"

nbd, just a cross between marvin gaye & prince

haha i d/led it from miguel's site which requires you to fill out a non-optional "Hopes and Dreams" box to download lololol smh

I think I like "Arch n Point" even more than "Adorn"! This is sooooooooooo good... even on my shitty laptop speakers it just sounds fantastic

Evan R, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 03:31 (2 years ago) Permalink

"Broads" is a tad wacky

Number None, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 09:19 (2 years ago) Permalink

yeah, it's just terrible. Like, delete-from-iTunes bad.

Evan R, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 14:28 (2 years ago) Permalink

god damn "arch n point"

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 March 2012 14:45 (2 years ago) Permalink

yeah I'm unchecking 'broads'

dayo, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 14:47 (2 years ago) Permalink

I love how fucking LOUD "Arch n Point" is... that guitar!

Evan R, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 14:49 (2 years ago) Permalink

wow, "...all" might be better?

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 March 2012 15:00 (2 years ago) Permalink

"arch n point" could def be a trey songz album track, but like 10x better

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 March 2012 15:00 (2 years ago) Permalink

man, "...all" is almost threatening to be organ house

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 March 2012 15:05 (2 years ago) Permalink

this shit bangs

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 March 2012 15:09 (2 years ago) Permalink

yeah, i think "...all" might be my favorite from this one

if you feeling frogbs, leap (The Reverend), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 19:21 (2 years ago) Permalink

Didn't realize we had a Miguel thread! Although in retrospect, duh.

Vol. 2 > Vol. 1 I think, although Adorn >>>> all the other tracks from the project.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 19:54 (2 years ago) Permalink

naw, i think (although my opinion on this might change) "gravity" > any of the tracks on vol 2 also

if you feeling frogbs, leap (The Reverend), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 19:57 (2 years ago) Permalink

yeah listened to volume 2 today and nothing stuck with me at all really, kinda disappointed

but then went back and listened to vol 1, all i want is you, and mischief, so all is good. i seriously slept on all i want is you for so long

recent thug (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 19:59 (2 years ago) Permalink

i kinda wonder how many people on this thread are still sleeping on all i want is you

some dude, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:00 (2 years ago) Permalink

did you ever come around on the title track?

recent thug (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:01 (2 years ago) Permalink

I didn't know about Mischief, d/ling that now.

if you feeling frogbs, leap (The Reverend), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:03 (2 years ago) Permalink

yeah i came around on the title track, although the salaam remi stuff on the album is still generally my least favorite

some dude, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:06 (2 years ago) Permalink

mischeif is not mindblowing or anything, miguel's voice is obviosly the main draw but the production's not great and the songwriting isn't nearly as strong as his recent work

recent thug (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:11 (2 years ago) Permalink

oh word

if you feeling frogbs, leap (The Reverend), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:17 (2 years ago) Permalink

There are small, scattered moments on Mischief where everything clicks and its like, "oh right, I love this guy." I've gotten a ton of writing done to that mixtape over the last couple of years; it's good background music that still kind of jams

Evan R, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:26 (2 years ago) Permalink

I just still can't believe that he did the hooks on that Blu & Exile album from back in 2007.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:54 (2 years ago) Permalink

saying "gravity" is the best thing off these tapes is clinically insane

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:59 (2 years ago) Permalink

you are underrating "gravity", which is amazing, but i don't think anyone said that

if you feeling frogbs, leap (The Reverend), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 22:21 (2 years ago) Permalink

yeah i misread you

i'd still rate them as adorn > ...all > arch n point > gravity

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 March 2012 22:32 (2 years ago) Permalink

the thick bassline + the harmonies on the "shoo-di-doo da-di-da da-di-da-dah" chorus >>>>>>

'broads' is cute enough, what's the big problem

haven't heard his very earliest stuff but at least on all i want is you there was a clear pharrell/nerd vibe going and 'broads' is just some more of that writ a little too large. can't pretend it's not there though

i'd even argue you can make a case for still being able to hear trace elements of it in the new good widescreen stuff too really, but then i guess your imagination would need to stretch to what a decent latter-era nerd song would sound like

in any case it's true what rev says about miguel's elision of "any air of tribute or homage" whoever he may happen to sound like - a very nice trick to have

'broads' is cute enough, what's the big problem

agree with this.

if you feeling frogbs, leap (The Reverend), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 23:39 (2 years ago) Permalink

don't really hear the pharrell/nerd thing at all tho

if you feeling frogbs, leap (The Reverend), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 23:40 (2 years ago) Permalink

Broads is pretty catchy and all. I just don't see myself listening to it again

Number None, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 23:44 (2 years ago) Permalink

was also thinking he has this really great way with harmonies that beautifully tie kinda meandering or seemingly disparate or just idk unresolved songs together - 'gravity', 'adorn' and 'sure thing' only truly become sure things once it happens

r|t|c, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 23:53 (2 years ago) Permalink

think i already said this last year but from 2:25 on 'girls like you' is nerd chapter & verse no question at least - and that's no huge leap from 'broads' really. the more intuitive stuff from then on i'm not gonna harp on about tho cos it's not like i really want to think of him in pharrellian terms that much either - just saying it's a strand in the dna is all

r|t|c, Thursday, 29 March 2012 00:04 (2 years ago) Permalink

yeah, his way with harmony is n/l

if you feeling frogbs, leap (The Reverend), Thursday, 29 March 2012 00:07 (2 years ago) Permalink

i'll get back to you about "girls like you"

if you feeling frogbs, leap (The Reverend), Thursday, 29 March 2012 00:07 (2 years ago) Permalink

there is TOTALLY a pharrell vibe and i never thought i'd say that about an R&B singer i wasn't trying to insult

some dude, Thursday, 29 March 2012 00:15 (2 years ago) Permalink

no thoughts on this yet but glad r|t|c is back missed ur posts bro

some dude, Thursday, 29 March 2012 00:49 (2 years ago) Permalink

"...all" is the standout track imo

dayo, Thursday, 29 March 2012 00:51 (2 years ago) Permalink

relistened to "Girls Like You" and i still dgi. Miguel as a singer sounds effortless, whereas Pharrell, even at his best, sounds labored, and his backing tracks are very loose, whereas the Neptures were always about hyperprecision. Even their more ramshackle moments sound pointedly so, like they made absolutely sure that bongo was just exactly that much offbeat.

if you feeling frogbs, leap (The Reverend), Thursday, 29 March 2012 01:59 (2 years ago) Permalink

you're overthinking it

some dude, Thursday, 29 March 2012 02:21 (2 years ago) Permalink

i'm into the santana joint but why is santana's guitar tone so gross and plasticky.

Merdeyeux, Sunday, 20 April 2014 02:52 (4 months ago) Permalink

I think you mean... smooth

Also yeah Miguel's guitarist is great!
