in the early 00s it was the standard for HIP HOP HEADS
blackalicious endorsed iirc

I was all about being a HIP HOP HEAD in the early 2000s (and have the Blackalicious cds to prove it, haha) and never heard of it. Maybe they just never retailed here? At any rate, I meant "hip hop dudes" in a broader sense than that.

the gloves (and his hand movements) are what really make the whole outfit legendary

when drake wears ott gloves i imagine him saying to a stylist 'i don't think people are paying enough attention to my hand movements, i need something to draw attention to them'

― J0rdan S., Monday, 5 March 2012 17:17 (1 year ago) Permalink
naw, that was a thing. i can't think of any other good examples off the top, but that was definitely a thing.

― lag∞n, Monday, 5 March 2012 17:54 (1 year ago) Permalink
black bubble jackets were huge then, now like every 'professional male' has a nface fleece
― lag∞n, Monday, 5 March 2012 17:56 (1 year ago) Permalink
i don't think drake has mastered being male at a professional level yet though
― some dude, Monday, 5 March 2012 17:57 (1 year ago) Permalink

yeah i mean from a chicago perspective specifically (which prob extends thru much of the midwest as well) this was the look of the rich white kids at my h.s. in the late 90s & at lots of suburban schools as well, but only recently became a street thing -- i think there's an aspirational wealth thing to it, or maybe its coming out of that moment where hipster & urban fashion were basically completely linked
but at least in chi the street rap (as opposed to hip-hop heads or w/e) look of high school kids is timberlands, true religion jeans, and a variety of tops: north face fleeces, american apparel hoodies, aeropostale & abercrombie shirts
but this wasn't always the case

there's a variety there but these looks are just as common in the burbs as in the city. there's a lot less distance in fashion than there used to be i guess
