yah "adorn" is my favorite song this year too i think. out of the 20 i've heard at least

bron paul (k3vin k.), Sunday, 4 March 2012 23:48 (4 years ago) Permalink

i don't think anything on the EP touches "adorn" but that's the single of the year so far, so no biggie

― J0rdan S., Sunday, March 4, 2012 6:24 PM (25 minutes ago) Bookmark

haven't heard it yet but aren't there only like 2 other songs on the EP? 'best of three' is kind of...anyway "Adorn" is nice but i have absolutely no idea how it's in any way different from or better than anything off the first album.

some dude, Sunday, 4 March 2012 23:53 (4 years ago) Permalink

i'm not saying that it is! just that it's the best song i've heard this year

J0rdan S., Sunday, 4 March 2012 23:56 (4 years ago) Permalink

"gravity" is really good too

al you don't see how "adorn" is stylistically different than like, "sure thing"?

bron paul (k3vin k.), Monday, 5 March 2012 00:06 (4 years ago) Permalink

you just gotta vibe to adorn, dude

flagp∞st (dayo), Monday, 5 March 2012 00:20 (4 years ago) Permalink

i vibe to it, but i also vibe to his whole album.

at this point he's only got a fairly small number of songs out that are all good to great and none too similar to each other. so "adorn" is unique but of a piece of that body of work just as "sure thing" is. its brevity is the only thing i see as any kind of departure.

some dude, Monday, 5 March 2012 01:13 (4 years ago) Permalink

I need to check out this ep. Thanks

curmudgeon, Monday, 5 March 2012 15:30 (4 years ago) Permalink

So I found this 2005 12-inch in a dollar bin a year and a half ago, and I bought it on the off chance it was the same Miguel. Turns out it was. The song is very much a product of its time.

Evan R, Monday, 5 March 2012 15:40 (4 years ago) Permalink

just went on Spotify to see if they had the new EP, they don't, but they do have a single he apparently released in 2011 called "Strawberry Amazing," which i had never heard anything about before, pretty good, very lo-fi Prince

something i noticed on the Art Dealer Chic liner notes -- Miguel self-produced the whole thing (except for one co-production from Fisticuffs, who did "Quickie" and "Girls Like You"). afaik Miguel didn't really do any of the production on the first album, so it looks like he's really stepping up and getting more involved in that side of things.

some dude, Monday, 5 March 2012 15:44 (4 years ago) Permalink

"Strawberry Amazing" was on his 2008's Mischief, too, and he co-produced that entire mixtape with Fisticuffs. That mixtape was super lo-fi; it sounds like he recorded it with a Casio and a boombox, but you can definitely hear a lot of echoes of the new EP in it.

Evan R, Monday, 5 March 2012 16:40 (4 years ago) Permalink

i don't really feel like the Jive album sanded off the edges of that aesthetic much at all, give or take a few of the more established producers' contributions

some dude, Monday, 5 March 2012 16:44 (4 years ago) Permalink

Yeah, I agree. When I first heard the Jive album, I was actually surprised by how low-budget it sounded at times, especially the Fisticuffs productions. Because it came out so quietly at the time (this was before "Sure Thing" had any legs) I was wondering if Jive had cut corners and were just trying to bury the album. It definitely took a few listens for some of the more muffled production to make sense.

Evan R, Monday, 5 March 2012 16:52 (4 years ago) Permalink

I kind of think of that hazy, reverbed vibe as the album's distinguishing characteristic. Gives it a very warm, intimate feel. Although a lot of that is down to Miguel himself, too.

like Strawberry Amazing but always hear a little Lenny Kravitz :/

'adorn' is great but the single of the year so far is obv 'climax'

flagp∞st (dayo), Tuesday, 6 March 2012 14:01 (4 years ago) Permalink

"Climax" hasn't really hit me yet. I'm an "Adorn" partisan.

My ex is friends w his little brother lol. Apparently he sings too tho not professionally afaik

I like miguel. Sure thing was never my thing but he has a great voice and feels like a genuine original

D-40, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 01:45 (4 years ago) Permalink

I think EZsnappin nailed it on tumblr where he said "Adorn" sounds like early-80s Marvin. The greater trick though, is that he achieves that vibe without any air of tribute or homage.

"Adorn" makes me think of Prince fwiw

D-40, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 11:16 (4 years ago) Permalink

it makes me think of Prince less than 80% of his material but he definitely wrote it in part because he couldn't write another song called "Adore"

I think I like "Arch n Point" even more than "Adorn"! This is sooooooooooo good... even on my shitty laptop speakers it just sounds fantastic

Evan R, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 03:31 (4 years ago) Permalink

"Broads" is a tad wacky

Number None, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 09:19 (4 years ago) Permalink

yeah, it's just terrible. Like, delete-from-iTunes bad.

Evan R, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 14:28 (4 years ago) Permalink

god damn "arch n point"

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 March 2012 14:45 (4 years ago) Permalink

yeah I'm unchecking 'broads'

dayo, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 14:47 (4 years ago) Permalink

I love how fucking LOUD "Arch n Point" is... that guitar!

Evan R, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 14:49 (4 years ago) Permalink

wow, "...all" might be better?

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 March 2012 15:00 (4 years ago) Permalink

"arch n point" could def be a trey songz album track, but like 10x better

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 March 2012 15:00 (4 years ago) Permalink

man, "...all" is almost threatening to be organ house

this shit bangs

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 March 2012 15:09 (4 years ago) Permalink

if you feeling frogbs, leap (The Reverend), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 19:21 (4 years ago) Permalink

Didn't realize we had a Miguel thread! Although in retrospect, duh.

Vol. 2 > Vol. 1 I think, although Adorn >>>> all the other tracks from the project.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 19:54 (4 years ago) Permalink

naw, i think (although my opinion on this might change) "gravity" > any of the tracks on vol 2 also

if you feeling frogbs, leap (The Reverend), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 19:57 (4 years ago) Permalink

yeah listened to volume 2 today and nothing stuck with me at all really, kinda disappointed

but then went back and listened to vol 1, all i want is you, and mischief, so all is good. i seriously slept on all i want is you for so long

recent thug (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 19:59 (4 years ago) Permalink

i kinda wonder how many people on this thread are still sleeping on all i want is you

some dude, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:00 (4 years ago) Permalink

did you ever come around on the title track?

recent thug (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:01 (4 years ago) Permalink

I didn't know about Mischief, d/ling that now.

if you feeling frogbs, leap (The Reverend), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:03 (4 years ago) Permalink

yeah i came around on the title track, although the salaam remi stuff on the album is still generally my least favorite

kacey musgraves remix of "waves" is just delightful

a touch of the xx's debut about it or am i imagining things

cher guevara (lex pretend), Thursday, 25 February 2016 21:26 (3 months ago) Permalink

no i totally hear it as like a country version of an xx song that never existed http://leakedsounds.net/2016/02/25/miguel-ft-kacey-musgraves-waves-remix-cdq/

apparently there's a whole "Waves" remixes EP coming out tomorrow

some dude, Friday, 26 February 2016 02:05 (2 months ago) Permalink

A "What's Normal Anyway" duet would've been very on-brand for her.

dc, Friday, 26 February 2016 04:47 (2 months ago) Permalink

kacey remix is the standout on the ep by a billion miles

tame impala remix is terrible
idk who rac is but that remix is alright but i feel like it's not quite as much of a mood alteration as it could've been
joshua tree version is just an acoustic version
the travis scott remix, ehhhh

cher guevara (lex pretend), Friday, 26 February 2016 11:33 (2 months ago) Permalink

Who is this EP actually aimed at? Like, that's just a really weird collection of remixers.

Matt DC, Friday, 26 February 2016 11:37 (2 months ago) Permalink

Was almost thinking I would happily hear Kacey covering Wildheart in its entirety, and then I remembered that The Valley and NWA were on it and thought yeah maybe not every song.

Matt DC, Friday, 26 February 2016 11:39 (2 months ago) Permalink

i think the EP primarily exists to push "Waves" (particularly the Travis Scott remix) as a radio single and remind people that this commercial DOA project exists, while also expanding the diversity/versatility of Miguel's sound and brand

some dude, Friday, 26 February 2016 12:06 (2 months ago) Permalink

OG "Waves" is a minor Derulo-wave masterpiece

this is to someone's credit but i can't decide who

what is remotely derulo about that song, of all songs

some dude, Saturday, 27 February 2016 02:21 (2 months ago) Permalink

it fits right in with "Want to Want Me", "Cheyenne", "I Can't Feel My Face", "Jealous" etc

Hey (Extended Mix), Saturday, 27 February 2016 02:48 (2 months ago) Permalink

yeah I heard "Get Ugly" twice today and hile I love Migs and Derulo's last album I hear no similarities.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 27 February 2016 02:58 (2 months ago) Permalink

It doesn't sound like "Get Ugly". You're making this more complicated than it is.

Hey (Extended Mix), Saturday, 27 February 2016 03:45 (2 months ago) Permalink

"It sounds like these Jason Derulo songs and similar songs by other other artists."

"But it doesn't sound like this other Derulo song that you weren't invoking at all!"

Hey (Extended Mix), Saturday, 27 February 2016 03:46 (2 months ago) Permalink

having not expected this ep at all i'm pleased to have this keeper from it, but it's so good that it makes me think a miguel remix project could've been even better - remixing a variety of songs off wildheart instead of just one? or just having kacey musgraves do all of them, imagine her doing "leaves"
