Well, yes Brian Eno's version is slightly better but were not voting between those two in this particular poll ;)

Moka, Thursday, 1 March 2012 23:17 (twelve years ago) link

'Kick In The Eye', easily.

Turrican, Thursday, 1 March 2012 23:20 (twelve years ago) link

My favourite Bauhaus song overall is 'Hope', though.

Turrican, Thursday, 1 March 2012 23:21 (twelve years ago) link

I have had a copy of this comp on vinyl since it came out! Its rather tattered and well played at this point (though most of that heavy playing was from 85-90, and nothing since, haha)

I hate bela lugosi's dead with the fire of a thousand suns, and I'm a big Bauhaus fan. Will never ever understand the love for that song.

Tossup between "Dark Entries" and "Third Uncle" for me, perhaps.

Lindsay NAGL (Trayce), Thursday, 1 March 2012 23:34 (twelve years ago) link

Their cover of "Rosegarden funeral of sores" is also excellent.

Lindsay NAGL (Trayce), Thursday, 1 March 2012 23:36 (twelve years ago) link

I mean:
"Yin and yang, lumber punch
Go taste a tart then eat my lunch"

Fckin hilariously awesome line.

Lindsay NAGL (Trayce), Thursday, 1 March 2012 23:37 (twelve years ago) link

The problem is that the studio version of Bela wasn't easily available for a long time, as I recall. I was lucky enough to find a CD single of it back in the day but it's absence on this comp leaves a void as it's far superior to the live version.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 1 March 2012 23:43 (twelve years ago) link

I had a glow in the dark picture disc vinyl of it.

i love this, knew that this poll would be fun.

Bee OK, Friday, 2 March 2012 06:15 (twelve years ago) link

"All we ever wanted" is the only one I could seriously think of picking instead of Bela. Odd that it would appear on a comp as it's the perfect cultish album cut. I was thrilled that they finished their set with that one when I saw them on the last reunion tour.

I love that everyone who has covered it always says "factory town" just like that, regardless of what they do w/the rest.

cashmere tears-soaker (Abbbottt), Friday, 2 March 2012 14:23 (twelve years ago) link

Except for MGMT, which actually annoys me everytime I hear it. He sings it "fac-to-ry towwnn".

LeRooLeRoo, Friday, 2 March 2012 22:22 (twelve years ago) link

Lagartija Nick, to be contrary. Also becase it soundtracks my rare BDSM dreams.

i think i'm going to get really drunk tonight and try to piece together side 3 and 4 of these as it's not on Spotify as is.

i have never heard the original but this song is brilliant. i love how is just keeps winding up, getting more crazier by the minute, winds up even more than explodes all over the place.

The single version of Bela was, of course, also used as the theme music for Goth Talk on SNL which prolly introduced some people to Bauhaus. I like it, but not as much as the live version from Shadow Of Light:

http://youtu.be/1U1SiIWuZeE

This poll, though, is a toss up between "In the Flat Field" and "The Passion of Lovers," though I'm also fond of several others. I think I have to go with "The Passion of Lovers." Kickass performance:

ppl would think of Bauhaus as a completely different band if "Spirit" had BLD's cultural penetration

― Vaseline MEN AMAZING JOURNEY (DJP), Thursday, March 1, 2012 1:26 PM (3 days ago)

I was v surprised to learn from wikipedia today that "Spirit" was a deliberate attempt to break into the Top 30! I would never hear that song and think "here's a band that's really angling for a hit."

cashmere tears-soaker (Abbbottt), Monday, 5 March 2012 01:27 (twelve years ago) link

The single version I assume you mean? When I first heard the version on the album I was really suprised, its quite different!

...when I was in high school, me and my bff used to sing the song as "The stage becomes a ship in flames/I tie you to the mast/Throw your body overboard/ and kick you up the arse"

... kids.

The single version is much better.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Tuesday, 6 March 2012 03:29 (twelve years ago) link

i see that most of the votes were for the first CD. expect for "She's in Parties" which is the only track from their last album on this comp. totally unexpected results as i expected "Bela Lugosi's Dead" to take it very easily in this poll.

The album versh of Spirit is really bombastic and drummy and stuff, the single vrsion is... I dont know how to describe it, very muted and sweet and quite pop-songy? I'd tell Dan which his is but ffs I cant use Spotify in this stupid backwards country anyway THIS is the single version:

That's the version I posted. This being the first time I've heard it and being intimately familiar with the album version, I kind of hate it and wish it all manner of ill.

Vaseline MEN AMAZING JOURNEY (DJP), Tuesday, 6 March 2012 14:22 (twelve years ago) link

Medical Dance Crab With Lesson (Trayce), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 05:28 (twelve years ago) link

missed this, in the flat field & passion of lovers both got robbed imo

I've never been a huge fan of "Kick in the Eye" tbh but otherwise I can get w/these results. You know what is a fucking sick track that got zero votes, though, is "In Fear Of Fear." That should have gotten all the votes that Kick got. Skronk skronk skronk skronk

Big Mr. Guess U.S.A. Champion (crüt), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 06:24 (twelve years ago) link

I always felt all I needed was the two CD volumes of this comp. Plus the BBC sessions, those are always top drawer.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 15:36 (twelve years ago) link

you need it all. Every last note, and a few live bootlegs.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 15:48 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah the album version is... not as good.

You misunderstand me. The album version is amazing. The single version is terrible.
