Yeah, Supernaut.

But I love the clattering groove of "Tomorrow's Dream", with those stuttering snare hits by Ward.

calstars, early CDs maybe didn't have this? I don't have the vinyl, but I'm assuming it's the picture of the band in front of an audience in a nice theater/music hall with Ozzy flashing the peace sign.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Friday, 9 January 2009 07:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Supernaut is the best song Edward III but it's not the only good one...what are yr thoughts on Snowblind? Cornucopia? St Vitus Dance (slightly inferior re-write of After Forever I know)? Tomorrow's Dream? those are really good songs too...

This is my fave Sabbath album (of all the ones I heard) but I am going to have to re-inspect Paranoid someday soon...

Got to be Supernaut, really. And yeah, Wheels of Kihnfusion, St Vitus Dance and all, but seeing as nobody has mentioned it, how about Laguna Sunrise? I don't really know what Balearic means, but this is kind of how I imagine it.

i thought balearic meant "in a sweaty disco"

rather than "stoned on a beach at 6 am"

I was thinking beachside comedown. Maybe some topless chicks building a sandcastle with a sangria moat. And Tommy Iommi instead of Chris Rea.

i would make that scene.

whoah, track after track is this ever a scorcher.

Charlie Howard, Friday, 9 January 2009 15:11 (fifteen years ago) link

maybe the towering, majestic opening cut needs some love

Charlie Howard, Friday, 9 January 2009 15:27 (fifteen years ago) link

The only problem with Supernaut is that it's produced in a kind of "...And Justice For All" way when it should have been more of a "Master of Puppets" steez

I've always wanted to hear a nice live boot of it

Tracer Hand, Friday, 9 January 2009 15:30 (fifteen years ago) link

'tomorrow's dream' really has a lovely groove to it. hopefully that gets some votes.

Charlie Howard, Friday, 9 January 2009 15:35 (fifteen years ago) link

I love sabbath but when I listen to "supernaut" I start to think my copy of vol 4 has a different version than everybody else's, you all have got mysterious access to this secret awesome song

Maybe the things that make Supernaut great are slightly different from the things that make Sabbath great. I kind of like a few Sabbath things, but I LOVE Supernaut!

Also, really fun guitar riff to play.

The acoustic guitar and percussion breakdown is just so good.

Jamie T Smith, Friday, 9 January 2009 15:39 (fifteen years ago) link

snowblind is such a great cautionary tale about being sure to take your warmest jacket with you when you go out into the snow

Charlie Howard, Friday, 9 January 2009 15:50 (fifteen years ago) link

has to be 'supernaut'

Michael B, Friday, 9 January 2009 15:53 (fifteen years ago) link

Gonna join in the Supernaut love. I wrongly thought the only good Black Sabbath was Paranoid until I downloaded that song from Audiogalaxy, so it's pretty much responsible for me getting into them in the first place.

Any answer *other* than "Supernaut" is laughably wrong.

Ward's awesome on this song.

you've got a lot of experience in being laughably wrong so I'll take your word on this

Edward III, Friday, 9 January 2009 18:14 (fifteen years ago) link

Listen to the album.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

that was much closer than I expected.

everyone else who voted cornucopia let's form a band

stuffy old songs about the buttocks (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Saturday, 10 January 2009 07:51 (fifteen years ago) link

didn't vote but I would have voted "Cornucopia" in a heartbeat, without a blink, it's so clearly the best track on this album. but I was taking a break from ILX and didn't even see this. Too bad. Laughable at all the knee-jerk "Supernaut" votes. Must be a lot of big James Gang fans. Cool track, but nothing like the ridiculous majesty of "Cornucopia" and "Wheels of Confusion".

i voted cornucopia! and i'm a james gang fan! (no really!)

eight years pass...

production on this thing is pretty $$$

haha awesome and fitting that supernaut completely obliterated every other song!

brimstead, Friday, 29 September 2017 01:11 (six years ago) link

I disagree, I really dislike the trebly sound of this record. The worst sounding of the essential Ozzy Sabbath records for me.

more Allegro-like (Turrican), Friday, 29 September 2017 06:10 (six years ago) link

Then you must not like the first two either ?

I prefer it to the thick brown mud of the third. But I guess that was the point.

calstars, Friday, 29 September 2017 12:17 (six years ago) link

people dissing the James Gang is so typical of old ILX basic ass opinions

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 29 September 2017 12:56 (six years ago) link

xpost:

No, I like the sound of the first two Sabbath records just fine. They sound great, and are both considerably less trebly than Vol. 4 ... it probably sounded amazing to the band at the time, though.
