derpy means "awkward" or "stupid", not literally "retarded", though kids use it the same way i used "retarded" in high school (ie not literally meaning retarded)

if you have ever made the comical noise DURRRRR to indicate confusion or foolishness then you would be familiar with the root of the word

i guess the question is whether DURRRRR refers to retarded people or not

the late great, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 17:32 (twelve years ago) link

it used to

Vaseline MEN AMAZING JOURNEY (DJP), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 17:40 (twelve years ago) link

well, DURRRRR you have it

the late great, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 18:16 (twelve years ago) link

I've never thought of "derpy" as having the same valence of ableism that "retarded" does.

Nicholas Pokémon (silby), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 18:41 (twelve years ago) link

it does, but in a very distanced and softened way. like saying "duh" to indicate stupidity.

tee hee Yes, I trust just about everypony; it's better to assume the best in ponies!

Bronies, go fuck yourselves:

I live in West Virginia, and the word nigger has no power here... because it's used so often by everyone ON everyone in the friendly sense of "wazzup mah nigga?!" that the offensive meaning is not valid. Derpy Hooves could have done this for the "retarded" meaning, render it archaeic and obsolete in language, overall improving the Englisih language by removing a meaninglessly offensive word.

having a hard time now thinking of ICP as more progressive and considerate than bronies...

Philip Nunez, Saturday, 3 March 2012 00:53 (twelve years ago) link

lol wv. you fucks.

just spent half an hour trying to find a mlp:fim song for my wife, who's been watching this with our daughter. turns our it was a parody of california gurls called "Equestria Gurls".

beachville, Saturday, 3 March 2012 01:01 (twelve years ago) link

Guessing that being from West Virginia is what makes that guy a fuck, not being a brony.

Ricky Gervais has moved to WV? Heavens!

carson dial, Saturday, 3 March 2012 05:12 (twelve years ago) link

Why do they think it's bad to have a name that occasionally means "retarded", but fine for little kids to sing the song "Ring a Ring o'Roses", which is referencing how people died in the black death?

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 3 March 2012 05:17 (twelve years ago) link

Still really wish I hadn't learned that "derpy" has hit the euphemism treadmill, I'm so fond of how it sounds as a word.

NWOBHamster (J3ff T.), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 23:30 (twelve years ago) link

I legitimately like the show. It's cute and has well drawn characters and stories, and the humor is actually based on the characters and not just sub-Adult Swim screaming and randomness. That said… No.

NWOBHamster (J3ff T.), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 23:35 (twelve years ago) link

On the other hand, that person clearly has some sort of mental issues, so now I feel bad for laughing…

the unboxing vid has to be some kind of lowpoint in society whether it's fake or real.

Nicholas Pokémon (silby), Thursday, 22 March 2012 04:58 (twelve years ago) link

My BofA bank card had my picture on it in the mid-2000s, but no cards I've had since then. I thought it was a great idea.

my 18-year old metalhead shut-in stepbrother is into this shit and even has an online girlfriend as a result (she's 14, but hey). what's funny is that he's always asking my stepmom for My Little Pony stuff and wants to be sent to one of those meetups, so my stepmom occasionally asks me "do you know what a pony convention is? what's with this pony stuff?" thanks to this thread, now I know

My oldest kid wanted to go to MacDonald's cause she knew they gave away MLP. Urgh. I hate MLP so much, but ah well.. We went anyway. They were not there, got sth else instead. I am beginning there is a god after all. lol

Nathalie (stevienixed), Thursday, 22 March 2012 12:43 (twelve years ago) link

I don't even want to think about how many MLPs are in my house.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Thursday, 22 March 2012 12:45 (twelve years ago) link

When I was 21, my girlfriend (who was 18) was really into Powerpuff Girls. I wasn't a huge fan, but I developed a habit of watching Powerpuff Girls even when she wasn't around. I put a stop to it after some buddies called me out.

Powerpuff Girls was pretty cool

Isn't this MLP show one with a scriptwriter who worked on tha tshow?

mh, Thursday, 22 March 2012 14:27 (twelve years ago) link

I remember being all "wait, really????" about Powerpuff Girls when I happened to flip onto an episode that featured HIM as the villain

I am also now picturing FBS stepbro as the guy in Heavy Metal Parking Lot who says something along the lines of "This is my girlfriend, she's thirteeeen."

wolf kabob (ENBB), Thursday, 22 March 2012 15:23 (twelve years ago) link

Don't know if it's changed tack since it was on in the early 00's but I didn't know Powerpuff Girls was considered the same as MLP... Always saw it in the same league as Dexter's Lab, Fairly Odd Parents, Spongebob etc i.e. Stuff that's actually pretty funny/appeals to grown ups on a regular level as well as kids. Some of the characters: Mojojojo, HIM, the Professor etc are pure comedy.

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Thursday, 22 March 2012 15:37 (twelve years ago) link

Powerpuff Girls was only a set number of seasons! And yes, it was clever and had funny jokes for all
