my current headliners for the worst two songs i've heard this year:
Anjulie - Behind the Music

Alyssa Reid and Jump Smokers - Alone Again

little clouds of citrus spritz as i peel (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 15:23 (1 year ago) Permalink

lol Karmin

my main reaction to them on SNL was "did the world need a rapping Jessie J?"

Vaseline MEN AMAZING JOURNEY (DJP), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 15:23 (1 year ago) Permalink

That Alyssa Reid song was around last year, in which I posted it in the Hip Hop Power Ballad thread as being the logical conclusion of the form. Though it appears they've now made it worse since the version I knew of featured some rapper named P Reign, not this white dude.

thank you for the inclusion of karmin

the appropriation of occupy imagery to support anjulie's crappy, soulless crusade against crappy, soulless music is particularly offensive

my understanding is that the alyssa reid track went to #1 in canada; the revised format has gone to #1 in the uk

little clouds of citrus spritz as i peel (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 17:18 (1 year ago) Permalink

The Alyssa Reid track never got to #1 in Canada, or at least not on the Canadian Hot 100. We just finally got a Canadian number #1 that wasn't related to some sort of event or charity a few weeks ago with Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe, the first since Avril Lavigne's Girlfriend.

Jesus, that autotune fast vibrato thing they've got all the girls doing is horrifying.

WOW "Alone Again" is so terrible I had to turn it off before the second chorus. speaking of which, does it strike anyone else as kind of... out of place?

like, I always took the Heart song as a kind of desperate aching love plea—'how do I get you alone (so that I can tell you all my feelings and the naughty things I want to do with you, because oooh baby I got it bad 4 u)'—whereas Alyssa Reid is like, 'how do I get you alone, wait I mean me not alone, because I am so lonely right now that I can't even write a proper hook'

till now, I always got by on my own / then you broke up with me / uhhh where was I again? / ...take it away, Jump Smokers!

I can't really pick one piece of sweetcorn out of Kid Cudi's new album as WZRD but it's the worst thing I've heard so far in 2012, and I've heard the Ting Tings album

here is a youtube with excerpts from all its anaemic shitawful Garageband songs

Sylv_ebanks (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 1 March 2012 12:47 (1 year ago) Permalink

The most utterly generic thing I could imagine possible in 2012.

boxedjoy, Thursday, 1 March 2012 13:03 (1 year ago) Permalink

i always thought cudi was a special level of terrible but that collection of album cuts is just shocking

drop these whiners on a island (Surviver style) (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 1 March 2012 13:43 (1 year ago) Permalink

okay I listened to almost that entire Cudi youtube posted here, and while I don't wanna judge him too harshly on the basis of out-of-context excerpts, can I just say: 'most people are pussies' is not a very good lyric. and this album sounds about as sonically adventurous as MILK on TOAST

Despite all my cheek, I am still just a freak on a leash (bernard snowy), Friday, 2 March 2012 15:23 (1 year ago) Permalink

cudi actually got mad at his label for 'undershipping' 50k copies of the WZRD album

Alyssa Reid didn't go to #1 in Canada but it was the most requested/played/etc. Canadian song on Canadian radio of 2011. Not in any particular week, just like...consistently, overall, etc. it was spun more times than any other Canadian song.

Already over 9M views on YouTube

maybe I'm naive but I have never seen product placement on such a level. i guess after the stonking success of "On the Floor" Swarovski and BMW (and everyone else) realised what a relative steal this sort of advertising is?

in any case this isn't just a little product drop near the beginning it is CONSTANT throughout the video

I am having second thoughts about hating this song though because it makes me want to hear Funky Kingston all the time, and anything that makes you want to hear Funky Kingston all the time can't be all bad, right?

Also I keep thinking Pitbull's on the verge of going "my my my MY MUSIC HITS ME, SO HARD"

i can't tell if britney is trying a british accent with that. her lady sovereign getup is also quite something.

are all of them trying to parody random artists? britney's faux accent and chav getup suggest lady sovereign. will.i.am sure seems to be doing a kanye parody. meanwhile waka says "yolo" and "ice like a$ap"??? and then hit-boy rapping like 4 bars? this is so weird.

weezy, of course, has been in a constant state of self parody for the past couple years now
