i have a student who is a "brony", he looks and acts like a cross between data and wesley crusher. he receives educational support for asperger's syndrome but he really doesn't need it, he seems less disabled on a social level and more disinterested ... anyway he spends all of his spare time in class - which is quite a bit, he's super bright - drawing male my little ponies and writing fan fic about them

the weirdest part about it is that he doesn't seem to catch any shit about it from other students

I like guys who really play the absurd and goofy hat card bcz they frequently contrast it by wearing the world's blandest of casual wear.

Male Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Nutsack (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 03:48 (1 year ago) Permalink

fedora guy is so wrong, in so many countless ways ...

der Truthahn des Giftes (Eisbaer), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 03:49 (1 year ago) Permalink

how many of the guys pictured in this thread qualify as "grown men" tbh?

the amazing thing about fedora dude is that he manages to pull focus from the dude in the center wearing a Nightmare Before Christmas raver hat

I mean, just ponder that

I haven't watched any of these, but Powerpuff Girls definitely had crossover appeal and in-jokes for adult audiences. There are also dudes who are really into animation stuff regardless so... this doesn't seem that odd considering the writer and context.

There has to be some sort of version of Rule 34 that also states that if there's an entertainment media, there is a group of men into it somewhere.

valleys of your mind (mh), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 16:28 (1 year ago) Permalink

I am seriously considering sewing plush my little ponies because the bronies are willing to fork over mad cash for them.

Some serious underestimating at what goes on at these kind of conferences. I guarantee a scary amount of those guys have gotten some play with their fellow enthusiasts.

"chewing on a pen" is the only one i'd guess has ever had some stank on his hang-low.

I think you mean "sex-related stank on his hang-low" because I may be prejudging but, based on this picture, I am pretty sure a good number of the people in that picture are familiar with stank all kinds of places on their bodies

IIRC pictures of what I was doing have been posted to ILE, which mostly involved stalking the halls dressed as an extra from Degrassi High and doing the cabbage patch in my friends' kitchens

Vaseline MEN AMAZING JOURNEY (DJP), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 21:42 (1 year ago) Permalink

(should note said cabbage patch was usually to "The Days of Swine and Roses" by TKK)

Most of those people look pretty normal to me, aside from wacky-hat guy. The only cue I could really take to suggest that they're all the risible nerdy virgins you think they are is the fact that they're at a brony meet-up.

emil.y, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 21:43 (1 year ago) Permalink

fedora looks like he wandered into the wrong room and was too polite to leave before they took the picture; I imagine 30 seconds afterward he was all "so just to clarify, the Mad Men meetup is on the right"

iirc bronies are mostly pretty strident/outspoken about their distaste for pre-FIM mlp

just disinterest I would think? make sense that anyone into FIM would get into Powerpuff Girls but not necessarily '80s MLP (unless they actively want to seek ersatz nostalgia)

just a dorp in the scrooge vault (sic), Sunday, 28 April 2013 13:09 (1 month ago) Permalink

i dunno about powerpuff girls, either, though. bronyism seems awfully dedicated to this particular instance of the beloved thing. it's not about "cute cartoon featuring magical little girls", it's about PONIES.

I remember sitting down with my little girl cousin to watch the old incarnation of MLP in about 2006? and thinking, "damn, this is pretty entertaining."

I've not seen Friendship is Magic, but damn, these guys are...odd. Has anyone come up with a theory as to why so many badly socialized young men are transfixed by this show for young girls?

Is this the hikikomori phenomenon arriving in the West at last?

arctic mindbath (President of the People's Republic of Antarctica), Thursday, 6 June 2013 00:24 (1 week ago) Permalink

I have not studied this in depth or anything but my guess is most of them just like being in some community and having something to talk about, sorta dig that they get to be absurdist in a 'look at me' way, don't actually enjoy the cartoons that much or I mean maybe it's moderately entertaining, who knows. and then a few are probably just perverts.

iatee, Thursday, 6 June 2013 00:34 (1 week ago) Permalink

yeah, I guess so. also, this really doesn't bear much in common with hikikomori either, more of an odd interest blown up a few degrees. I should stop posting while sleep deprived.

The former has connections to hipsterdom, the latter anti-hipster pride and anti-authority authenticity fetishizing, ie they're old man rockists (often literally - "I only listen to metal but this pony song touches me to the core".)
