scharpling is weird. i like him on the best show when he's doing a character, but on this it's kind of uncomfortable to see the seams between person and persona.

mizzell, Friday, 24 February 2012 15:41 (twelve years ago) link

I thought the Tom & Marc episode became too whiney and had far too much woe-is-me bullshit. And it wasn't funny either.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 24 February 2012 15:42 (twelve years ago) link

w/e ~ phony can = any performer; figure it out, it's a lame dismissal imo

johnny crunch, Friday, 24 February 2012 15:44 (twelve years ago) link

I keep meaning to check this out but then remember it's comedians talking about themselves.

tho i do <3 Tom Waits, i laughed at the impersonation.

I wonder if the Todd Hanson episode (#190) would affect you, Morbs.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 24 February 2012 15:50 (twelve years ago) link

though bill maher was quite good actually. usually think he is super pompous but enjoyed him on this. maybe you guys suffiecently lowered my expectations.

I felt the same way. I expected him to be brusque and standoffish, and he was neither. I'm not a big fan of his by any stretch, but even though many comedians can talk about "In the Carson era, it was like this, but now it's like this" I enjoyed hearing his perspective on it.

I like Tom when he's drunkenly complaining about people not liking his bits

love when Maron tries to talk about music. Yes, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (formed 1991) were around for years before the Black Crowes (formed 1989.) Maybe he meant Pussy Galore.

I liked the Offerman/Mulally convo for the most part. Except the *way* Megan Mullally talked, I had to really try hard to listen and not be annoyed at her. That bored, yawny, disengaged way of speaking. I dunno if she was nervous, or that's how she always is but she just came off as bored and/or rude.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 5 March 2012 18:38 (twelve years ago) link

can't decide if the guy from dinner and a movie being suicidal is surprising or not.

mizzell, Monday, 5 March 2012 18:43 (twelve years ago) link

did not enjoy that one

That bored, yawny, disengaged way of speaking

iirc this is probably why her daytime talk show didn't last very long.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 5 March 2012 19:08 (twelve years ago) link

I've heard better interviews with Offerman (Kevin Pollack podcast and Comedy Bang Bang) but it was nice to hear him and Mullaly bouncing off one another.

President Keyes, Monday, 5 March 2012 19:11 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah Bert Kreisher was unbearable.

Oh my god, yes, his laugh in particular.

So weird to see him after listening to so many hour of his conversation.

i haven't listened to the podcast in a few weeks (my commute got substantially shortened and i'd rather listen to music these days anyway) but will definitely DVR this:

fred willard was good, kind of what i expected: seemed really sweet, had a bit of naivite about him but up for anything, a little iffy on gender and race stuff.

mizzell, Monday, 19 March 2012 18:48 (twelve years ago) link

Mary Mack plays a pretty mean clarinet on today's episode.

polyphonic, Monday, 19 March 2012 18:49 (twelve years ago) link

Fred's "glad you're short and white and not big and black" break-in story was a bit eyebrow-raising.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 19 March 2012 18:50 (twelve years ago) link

Maybe IFC's next show will be UYD.

Have to say, the first few minutes of the Mindy Kaling interview were almost like a parody of WTF: talking block by block about streets in Cambridge, Mass., in order for both of them to put themselves on the right side of well off vs. not-too-well-off.

(Dre) vs. (Eazy), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 18:35 (twelve years ago) link

Just now listening to Molly Shannon's ep. I like her so much more now than I did when she was on SNL.

great interview.

Interestingly, this part was filmed for Maron's episode of Morgan Spurlock's A Day in the Life.

Still way behind on these, but I'm always pleasantly surprised when a guest I don't expect to really like much wins me over. The Ralphie May one was a great listen and he seems like a good dude.

stan this sick bunt (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 21:42 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, never was really a Ralphie May fan, but that was a fun hour.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 21:43 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah I loved that interview

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 21:43 (twelve years ago) link

He was alright, although him saying he got a 20 minute standing ovation for every gig was grating. Like well done, you are the greatest comic ever.

Thoughts? You must have loads. (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 21:47 (twelve years ago) link

Having trouble slogging through Michael Cera tbh.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 21:50 (twelve years ago) link

xpost But in the context of a guy who's had to prove that he's funny and treated so poorly by his peer comedians, it makes sense that he would have a chip on his shoulder now. He still feels like he has something to prove, even if he really doesn't anymore. I think it's more of a 'how you like me now' to the people in his head who hate him, you know?

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 21:51 (twelve years ago) link

yeah I'm gonna have to work up to Cera

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 21:51 (twelve years ago) link

Jeffrey Tambor on Thursday btw. I know they won't go there, but I really want to hear about Three's Company/The Ropers. Maybe he has a good Norman Fell or Audra Lindley story?

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 21:53 (twelve years ago) link

I got p burnt out on wtf and the next one on my list to listen to is the live one with comics from his past in boston or something. i tend to blow straight through like 10 at a time on work shifts, so i don't think cera in a list of many will be bad for me.

I don't like when he interviews young comedians/whatever though, unless they have something p major to talk about (like plaza's stroke).

he talked about this stuff some on a/v club last week

future worm food (n/a), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 21:56 (twelve years ago) link

ooh, i'll have to check that out

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 21:59 (twelve years ago) link

fuck this matt graham guy. wanted to yell at him several times "maybe all this bad stuff happens to you cause you are an insufferable prick" and then he breaks out that he feels that all women are satan's helpers here to suck the life out of me. good luck on okcupid, dickhead.

yeah, this guy is fucking terrible and i spent the entire 37 minutes of the interview i could stand wanting to strangle him. he's awful in so many ways, but the final straw was when he called racism on not making the basketball team because he was white.

stan this sick bunt (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 16:47 (twelve years ago) link

i actually think marc shouldn't have even posted that one, that dude seemed pretty mentally unstable.

mizzell, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 16:49 (twelve years ago) link

I actually really liked this interview! Cera seems like a chill dude.

Cuba Pudding, Jr. (jaymc), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 16:52 (twelve years ago) link

I didn't really get an unstable vibe from him, but then I gave up less than halfway through, it just felt to me like he had an axe to grind with the entire world. Like bitching about how he was "only" the second ranked scrabble player in the world and how no one ever gave him his due by moving him to #1 or w/e.

stan this sick bunt (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 16:53 (twelve years ago) link

he talked about how he had a serious, deep relationship with his cat, that basically ruled out doing lots of other things in his life.

mizzell, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 16:57 (twelve years ago) link

totally unstable, bi-polar, paranoid, whatever. and there's that self-aware moment where he says he knows maron is basically using him for out-there content, and he's giving it up in exchange for exposure that he can leverage into...something. the 2nd half of the interview takes a turn, it was done on a different day iirc and is less manic and more honest-seeming (but still pretty crazy).

40oz of tears (Jordan), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 17:01 (twelve years ago) link

that interview make me hate both Maron and Graham--Maron a little more

President Keyes, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 17:17 (twelve years ago) link

I liked the Graham interview, even though I kind of hate the guy. I found interesting how sexist he was but it also revealed itself to be this deeply misplaced self-resentment. It seemed especially clear when he was talking about how he was good friends with Janeane Garofalo and he likes to go over his set with her before he takes it further and then out of nowhere he starts saying this hateful shit.

Honestly, some of my favorite WTF's are the ones with people that I don't personally find likable.

You'd have to pay me to listen to that Cera one though.
