the classic take down of using multiple regression in a freaknomics type manner http://www.crab.rutgers.edu/~goertzel/mythsofmurder.htm - the scary thing is w/super freaknomics they even abandoned this half assed level of scienceing and just found fascinating crazy people to talk to

so did anyone hear about how chris brown stole a fan's iphone

teledyldonix, Friday, 24 February 2012 16:24 (2 years ago) Permalink

It would be funny if he ends up in jail for taking an iphone, and not for smashing someone's face in. And by funny I mean infuriating.

Nicole, Friday, 24 February 2012 16:36 (2 years ago) Permalink

Bullseye.

thinveneer, Friday, 24 February 2012 16:42 (2 years ago) Permalink

http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2012/02/threatening-chris-brown-is-not-helpful/253541

This information isn't offered to make anyone more lenient on Chris Brown, or to excuse his actions. It's offered to point out that Brown's capacity for abusive violence didn't materialize out of thin air. And when threatening him with more abuse, it's worth thinking about how this all began. When you threaten Chris Brown you aren't fighting abusive violence. You are speaking his language.

I had heard about the CM Punk thing, but didn't hear how horrifyingly racist it was.

http://www.thefrisky.com/2012-02-24/the-soapbox-facts-about-rihanna-and-other-abused-women/

this is a good article, though a bit beginner's 101 wrt domestic abuse psychology and it's assumptive like everyone else is -- are we all just assuming they're back together romantically, now? no one knows that. but still, if they were, the article is helpful reading.

if you ever leave me peggy, leave some propane at my door (zachlyon), Friday, 24 February 2012 19:31 (2 years ago) Permalink

they're obviously making a lot of public gestures of spending time together and people around them seem pretty certain they're at least hooking up, so whether they're once again in a completely monogomous relationship is kind of a moot point (CB still has a girlfriend who is reportedly fine w/ an open relationship)

DNRIYHM NATION 1814 (some dude), Friday, 24 February 2012 19:34 (2 years ago) Permalink

of course she is!

J0rdan S., Friday, 24 February 2012 19:34 (2 years ago) Permalink

if only we all had sig others who were fine with having open relationships aka fucking our ex girlfriend rihanna

J0rdan S., Friday, 24 February 2012 19:35 (2 years ago) Permalink

my wife never lets me even hang out with rihanna just to catch up on old times :(

DNRIYHM NATION 1814 (some dude), Friday, 24 February 2012 19:37 (2 years ago) Permalink

if they're not actually together again the song is even more distasteful tbh cuz then it really is purely using the abuse narrative to get attention.

zach w/all due respect i think most people itt are v aware of domestic abuse psychology, victim-blaming and so on; rihanna of course has the right to make whatever decision she wants but going out of one's way to defend those (stupid, distasteful) decisions is a different thing. and finding her actions depressing isn't the same as blaming her, much less blaming her instead of CB and the music industry.

your style is hella jr. high school al

D-40, Friday, 24 February 2012 19:56 (2 years ago) Permalink

Oh good we haven't had one of these in awhile.

Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 24 February 2012 19:57 (2 years ago) Permalink

also another thing on rihanna - theoretically i am totally 100% against the idea that pop stars "should" behave like role models. but in practice her actions do have an effect!

In the days following Rihanna's 20/20 interview, calls to the National Domestic Violence Hotline rose by 59% – with the National Teen Dating Abuse Helpline seeing a 73% increase.

i mean...that happened. we can handwave away her responsibility as much as we want and we probably shouldn't place any onus on her to behave in any way, but that happened, and as she acknowledged at the time she knew that would happen.

lex pretend, Friday, 24 February 2012 20:01 (2 years ago) Permalink

As long as al can still ital posts to imply smug condescension I'm not sure these will ever end

D-40, Friday, 24 February 2012 20:01 (2 years ago) Permalink
