"This is a decisive step, which creates certainty, and the players are fully behind it.

Decisive? Really? Let's appoint the guy who as assistant to the guy who we think failed probably wasn't offering any new insight into why we were failing at the time.

what a fuckin mess

Steve Bruce must be feeling right chipper today

Ismael Klata, Friday, 24 February 2012 11:47 (twelve years ago) link

well they interviewed him friday and kept interviewing all week, no surprise to him.

i mean, their mistake, amongst many, was to interview steve bruce to begin with.

beware of greek bearer bonds (darraghmac), Friday, 24 February 2012 12:07 (twelve years ago) link

Torres not called up by Del Bosque for next weeks friendly btw.

HO WBEAUTIFUL IS THE GENTLYFALLINGBLOOD? (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 24 February 2012 12:16 (twelve years ago) link

It had to happen. I remember being a little surprised he was still getting called up in his last period at Liverpool.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 24 February 2012 12:19 (twelve years ago) link

Agreed.

Holy fucking shit at the Spanish midfield though:

Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid), Xavi, Cesc Fábregas, Sergio Busquets, Andrés Iniesta, Thiago Alcántara (all Barcelona), Juan Mata (Chelsea), Santi Cazorla (Málaga), David Silva (Manchester City), Jesús Navas (Sevilla)

HO WBEAUTIFUL IS THE GENTLYFALLINGBLOOD? (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 24 February 2012 12:22 (twelve years ago) link

I would find the decline of Torres genuinely heartbreaking if he wasn't at Chelsea.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Friday, 24 February 2012 12:23 (twelve years ago) link

yeah that midfield really needs more of a defensive element lbi.

a hoy hoy, Friday, 24 February 2012 12:27 (twelve years ago) link

think the defensive element is that the opposition never get the ball

pandemic, Friday, 24 February 2012 12:28 (twelve years ago) link

it is heartbreaking, tbf, but there is an element of 'return to norm' about it- not that his norm was ever 'pure shite' but his year or two as the focal point of lfc was over and above the rest of his career statistically

beware of greek bearer bonds (darraghmac), Friday, 24 February 2012 12:28 (twelve years ago) link

going to chelsea is an elemental part in the poor nando story. it is p much the most depressing place it could have happened in such a style, bar real madrid.

a hoy hoy, Friday, 24 February 2012 12:31 (twelve years ago) link

Would he be revived, I wonder, by signing for a team with no other forwards? i.e. there might be worse things for Arsenal to spend the van Persie money on

Ismael Klata, Friday, 24 February 2012 12:32 (twelve years ago) link

nah, not even taking torres in a swap deal with walcott, apparently

Rosie 47 (ken c), Friday, 24 February 2012 12:35 (twelve years ago) link

arsenal not v much a torres team, imo- he was quintessentially the counterattacking point man, not yr 'get involved' passing forward.

He'd do damage at utd, everton

beware of greek bearer bonds (darraghmac), Friday, 24 February 2012 12:35 (twelve years ago) link

henry was a counterattacking point man though?

Rosie 47 (ken c), Friday, 24 February 2012 12:37 (twelve years ago) link

maybe as ade's replacement at spurs. if they could get him for 5m and half the wages.

a hoy hoy, Friday, 24 February 2012 12:39 (twelve years ago) link

henry was a counter-attacking point man with, tbh, a bit more to his overall game than torres, playing in a team with a lot more to their game than current arsenal

beware of greek bearer bonds (darraghmac), Friday, 24 February 2012 12:43 (twelve years ago) link

He should probably just go back to La Liga.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Friday, 24 February 2012 12:44 (twelve years ago) link

inter, mebbe

anchelotti at psg might try again

I've seen a few people say this but it's nonsense. He may not have been quite as prolific at Atletico but he was still class. He's a shell now

Number None, Friday, 24 February 2012 12:57 (twelve years ago) link

yeah at atletico he was more of an intelligent defence stretching nuisance like anelka

his conversion ratio was ordinary but he was still a v good player and nothing like his current incarnation

i've not seen enough of him at chelsea lately to comment on his general play, thought consensus was that his performance was improving

How willing is Torres to admit what would seem to be the screamingly obvious, that he is undergoing a crisis of confidence? Not very, judging from what both his agent and a close friend of his told me. At best, there appears to be some ambiguity on the matter. His friend, who preferred not to be identified in print, said he had seen him recently in Madrid with his family and he had looked “neither torn nor pained”. “He is tranquilo. He accepts what’s happening as something normal in football and believes it has to do with Chelsea’s style of play,” the friend said. Besides, the friend added, he had been playing really well since the start of the new year and hit the bar with a fantastic overhead kick that, had it gone in, “would have been goal of the season”. Nevertheless, the friend did seem to suggest the possibility of something going on in Torres’ mind too when he proposed that perhaps Liverpool had “laid the evil eye on him”. “It’s tough, sure. He spent eight games as a substitute at the end of last year. That had never happened to him, not even as a child.”

has he done any interviews in the past year? or even an obvious post-match (that wasn't like 'well you played well and just didnt get the goal' and actually asked him about ti)

a hoy hoy, Friday, 24 February 2012 14:30 (twelve years ago) link

does anyone else think 'alan partridge' when they watch that torres clip or is it just me

Chris, Friday, 24 February 2012 15:37 (twelve years ago) link

never seen him play tbh

beware of greek bearer bonds (darraghmac), Friday, 24 February 2012 15:42 (twelve years ago) link

Still not quite sure if it's a real ad or a Nike Spain viral.

James Mitchell, Friday, 24 February 2012 15:48 (twelve years ago) link

Arshavin to Zenit. On loan, according to SSN. Arsenal don't sell their dodgy players any more do they? Just ship them out on loan.

eboue?

mizzell, Friday, 24 February 2012 17:27 (twelve years ago) link

Ha, I think of Eboue as one of their good players. But point taken.

pandemic, Friday, 24 February 2012 17:38 (twelve years ago) link

never saw a shit player get so good so fast as eboue once gooners realised djourou was next in line at rb

Chris Samba has gone to Anzhi. Do transfer windows and all that they mean not matter to the super rich?

a hoy hoy, Friday, 24 February 2012 20:53 (twelve years ago) link

Russian transfer window closes later.

Mohombi Khush Hua (ShariVari), Friday, 24 February 2012 20:53 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, tonight iirc

pandemic, Friday, 24 February 2012 20:54 (twelve years ago) link

End of the tax year probably has something to do with too.

James Mitchell, Friday, 24 February 2012 21:13 (twelve years ago) link

Given that Scott Dann has knacker problems and Samba looked like he wanted to be anywhere other that at Ewood Park, letting Ryan Nelsen go looks like a really stupid move, even if he basically has no legs left.
