country songs go top 40 or even top 10 pretty frequently these days, or at least it feels like more frequently in the past year or two than for a while before that
I think the only country songs that hit the top 10 last year were Jason Aldean's "Dirt Road Anthem" and Taylor Swift's "If This Was a Movie" (and you could probably argue whether the T-Swift counts). But lots of country hanging around in the top 40, for sure.

also Lady Antebellum's "Just A Kiss" but yes we're talking about top 40, top 10 was just an aside and not worth being pedantic about

'Call Me Maybe' is the lead single from her new EP - it's been around since November, when it crawled into Canadian charts. It hit #1 about a month ago and is only the fourth Canadian song to hit #1 on the Canadian charts since 2007, when Billboard took over the counting of these things (other 3 = Avril's Girlfriend, the Vancouver Olympics theme song and the 'Artists for Haiti' Canadian version)

This is disgusting in the exact way that most things that involve Billboard chart analysis are disgusting.

What did I do wrong exactly? I just thought it was interesting. Sorry for saying something that you found boring!
― Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Friday, 24 February 2012 03:50 (1 year ago) Permalink
Nothing! I think some dude was referring to my whining about the charts.
It was interesting, by the way, just depressing to hear that exactly half of the homegrown #1s of the last five years here were charity/event things.
― I Fucked Up (jer.fairall), Friday, 24 February 2012 05:42 (1 year ago) Permalink
"give me all your luvin'" hit #1 somewhere?!
here it entered at #37 and promptly exited the top 40 :/
― lex pretend, Friday, 24 February 2012 08:33 (1 year ago) Permalink
it's somewhat depressing how little of the music that fits into this thread i care about/how little music i like fits into this thread
that said, kelly clarkson's new single is one of those that's taken on a new lease of life for me now that it's an actual hit that i hear everywhere

Yeah. Stronger grew on me quite a bit. Need to double back to that album.

I'm not sure if it's because of digital sales/more accurate counting or if there's actually just been a drop in successful Canadian pop since 2007, but in the early part of the 00's there were FAR more frequent Canadian #1s. And in the late 90s also. \(oo)/
On the other hand, those #1s were SoulDecision and so forth.
― Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Friday, 24 February 2012 15:43 (1 year ago) Permalink
"Stronger" the song has grown on me too but it's nowhere near her top tier of hits and Stronger the album has strangely pointed me toward the conclusion that All I Ever Wanted is a kind of underrated album

I still feel like "Mr Know It All" is actually a Natasha Beddingfield song
― robbery by sudden snatching (DJP), Friday, 24 February 2012 15:45 (1 year ago) Permalink
it'd be aggressively vapid even by Bedingfield's standards though

Yeah, the Stronger album is by and large the sound of Clarkson on autopilot ("You Love Me" needs to be a single asap though).

xp If I'd spent some more time with that song she does with Jason Aldean last year, I might've voted for it in the eoy tracks poll. I sort of really love it now.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 24 February 2012 15:56 (1 year ago) Permalink
yeah she keeps going on about country and country performers and it'd totally suit her
kind of agree stronger is a bit autopilot but otoh it has more keepers than all i ever wanted

I really think the whole album is awesome. Except "you can't win". "Hello" will be my summer jam 4 sure. Like I don't get why people don't talk about it more! It's so gorgeous. And obvs "let me down" is 10/10 perfection

I think the drop in Canadian #1's after 2007 might be attributed to Billboard's Canadian Hot 100 replacing the Canadian singles chart. Now the Canadian Singles Chart, which came into effect in 2001 replacing RPM Chart, wasn't that great of a measurement either because I think it mostly dealt with the sales of singles and since Canada was never much of a singles market, it usually meant that the number one went to something that was exclusively a single like the song from the latest Canadian/American Idol winner. Of course for the longest time, I didn't know of the existnce of the RPM chart or singles chart and so my perception of hits came from what was topping the Muchmusic Countdown, and I'm not sure what they used as the basis for that.
― MarkoP, Friday, 24 February 2012 17:40 (1 year ago) Permalink
i've been curious about how canadian charts differ from american charts for a while so this is super interesting to me
― DNRIYHM NATION 1814 (some dude), Friday, 24 February 2012 17:44 (1 year ago) Permalink
RPM was awesome. And they have the entire archive of it from 1963 - 2000 online courtesy of the government.
― Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Saturday, 25 February 2012 15:29 (1 year ago) Permalink
MusicMusic Coundown was pretty much based on video request to the MuchMusic tv channel, iirc. Comparing that and RPM/Singles Chart it had a bit more of the Canadian 'urban' stuff - Shawn Desman, Keshia Chanté, Rascalz, far too much Swollen Members, etc. and less of the Amanda Marshall, Sarah McLachlin, etc. Lilith Fair type stuff that was a mainstay on the RPM Charts. But Much also put out the annual MuchDance compilations, the soundtrack of a million 8th grade house parties.
RPM was a mix of sales and radioplay but was pre-digital sales mostly. There was still a fair amount of Canadian content on the charts as a whole though.
Canadian Singles Chart from 2000 - 2007 was, as MarkoP says, a pretty iffy means of measuring things.

My hatred of Jessie J's first two singles has eroded any goodwill I had from "Party In The USA", and her performance on Top Of The Pops over Xmas made me want to give on music as a whole, so I haven't knowingly/willingly listened to Domino and I probably won't.

tom ewing on jessie j:
Speaking of forced and artificial, as the UK ambassador on this panel I'd like to publically apologise for Jessie J, a tin-eared Bizarro to Gaga's Superwoman who the British music industry (or what's left of it) seems cruelly determined to make happen overseas. She's a caricature of the modern pop star—ever ready with a platitude, peddling lumbering self-empowerment but still obsessed with long-gone haters.

I've been tracking Little Jinder (then just Jinder, and now Little Jinder again) since 2008 maybe? A few stray demos and one or two singles and now this (an album is supposedly finally due). Dunno if this fits squarely in the pop thread's domain, but it's the closest I've got:
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 27 February 2012 17:40 (1 year ago) Permalink
lol i did not really realize those are the lyrics to mr know it all
i just think there's something powerful there -- especially in the chorus, but granted the production/lyrical work on a lot of the song could stand to be drastically improved
