No, I saw her show last night at CalArts and I think she is showing the same movies. I liked some of her work (Britton, SD is great) but there was quite a lot that didn't click for me.

I'm in for something... What part of town are you staying in?

Stockhausen's Ekranoplan Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Thursday, 23 February 2012 16:39 (twelve years ago) link

Do y'all know any really great moving walkways in LA that are NOT at LAX?

Also here is something else we could potentially talk about:

I've had the Langer's and Philippe's sandwiches, both of which I enjoyed. I don't have much to add other than I probably should eat less sandwiches

i had a good south american-style banh mi from a food truck for lunch

Prince Rebus (donna rouge), Friday, 24 February 2012 00:55 (twelve years ago) link

that sounds nice. What truck? Sorry if that's too personal a question

haven't really done the food truck thing in awhile but it was so so nice out today and i didn't bring lunch

Prince Rebus (donna rouge), Friday, 24 February 2012 00:57 (twelve years ago) link

That does look nice. Isn't it beautiful today? So beautiful. I made lunch at home, sat on porch and looked at mountains. Los Angeles!

toandos, Friday, 24 February 2012 01:09 (twelve years ago) link

i've had both of these plus the godmother (bay cities deli).

rayanne graff generator (get bent), Friday, 24 February 2012 03:56 (twelve years ago) link

bay cities is great but always crowded and too far away
also joan's on third sandwiches are always A+ imo (good celebrity stalking place too)

buzza, Friday, 24 February 2012 04:08 (twelve years ago) link

this is my local. it's not quite an east coast style italian sub shop, but they do a good sandwich. very limited hours, sadly.

rayanne graff generator (get bent), Friday, 24 February 2012 04:22 (twelve years ago) link

larchmont village wine shop has my fav sandwiches. basic straightforward stuff but done really well. also the gals who make the sandwiches are sweet.

buzza, Friday, 24 February 2012 04:40 (twelve years ago) link

my favorite higher-end sandwiches are at the artisan cheese gallery:

http://www.artisancheesegallery.com/our-menu

the pickles they serve with the panini are to die for.

rayanne graff generator (get bent), Friday, 24 February 2012 05:01 (twelve years ago) link

studio sub was never open whenever i walked by

Prince Rebus (donna rouge), Friday, 24 February 2012 08:28 (twelve years ago) link

hat's the sandwich shop behind Intelligentsia in Silver Lake? Their sandwiches are pretty good I recall.

Can anyone ITT show me a great tamale?

Also - somewhere I can get good cornmeal pancakes.

Also - a bar that can reasonably be expected to be relatively quiet (no DJ, jukebox is fine so long as I can hear and get a seat/booth) on a weeknight around Downtown/Eastside. Tall order, I know!

used to have a crush on Dawn from En Vogue (admrl), Friday, 24 February 2012 17:21 (twelve years ago) link

A friend of mine recently took me to this place as she assumed it would be quiet and it was totally rammed:

http://www.yelp.com/biz/1642-beer-and-wine-los-angeles

It used to be a real dive when I lived in the neighborhood - my studio was just around the corner. Anyway, it would be great if there was any room. I reminded me of an SF-style bar, why don't we have more of those?

(Uptown Baby) (admrl), Friday, 24 February 2012 17:27 (twelve years ago) link

We went to Baco Mercat on Valentine's Day (completely unplanned, we were just walking by), and it is worth all the hype... Didn't get the sandwich, but the baco meatballs and the octopus salad were life-affirming.

My main local is http://www.mariosdeli.com/ but I like this place a lot too: http://www.mooresdeli.com/

Say Cheese in Silver Lake is sort of a mini Dean & Deluca and have great sandwiches: http://saycheeselosangeles.com/
Sweetsalt's BLT is tremendous too http://sweetsaltfood.com/

thread making me realize my sandwich intake has dropped off considerably since moving here :/

I...*think* everyone on the thread who's a regular got a birthday invite so remind me if you didn't but as y'all know, we'll be at Lou on Vine a week from tonight. Reminds me, though -- we need a place to hang out at in the area before Lou opens at six, since they don't take reservations. Any recommendations?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 24 February 2012 17:32 (twelve years ago) link

Also, Roky Erickson is playing the El Rey on Thursday... think tickets are still available.

They are, I was just looking at them!...I really don't like the most recent record, but I have passed up many chances to see him...

Also, what I am truly excited about is The Raincoats playing at Echo(plex?) next month

Buddy of mine got into the Louis CK secret show at the Improv last week. How'd he do that? Well he just showed up and paid the doorman $10. Got to meet Aziz Ansari and Elijah Wood afterwards.

smh

my recommendation is to hang out in a different part of hollywood, because that stretch is a little desolate. either that or just drink at the bar until people arrive.

Dammit, all the podcasty shows I want to hit are sold out. Waiting in the airport for the flight down to Ontario now.

love, light, and walkabout-thinking (admrl), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 17:21 (twelve years ago) link

Pseudo-confrontational a la Sleigh Bells only with electronics. The LA Weekly did a big story about them last year: http://blogs.laweekly.com/westcoastsound/2011/04/tearist_la_weekly_cover.php

Had a pretty good visit today, with the exception of having to pay a few hundred bucks to prevent my rental car from getting towed in front of Meltdown Comics. Hit up an In-n-Out burger, drove around Hollywood, stopped by an old friend from Ann Arbor's vintage guitar & record shop over in Chinatown, wandering thru the mercado by there, had french dip at Philippes, and took a lot of photos.

Getting caught in Disneyland exiting traffic w/in a 1/4 mile of my hotel was not fun, tho.

saw tearist on accident a while ago, sub-bjorky sleigh bells

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Thursday, 1 March 2012 07:05 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, disneyland is open for 24 hours during "leap day" (until 6 a.m. on thursday), so i imagine the traffic in anaheim is pretty insane right now.
