her outfit in the "if" video is the cutest thing she's ever worn, maybe

it actually shocked college-aged me that I was taken aback at Janet Jackson cooing "your silky smooth/It feels so good against my lips, sugar" at me

I mean, I got over it in like 5 seconds but at first I was all "well I guess we're done with waiting!"
"Got To Be There," "Never Can Say Goodbye," and "I'll Be There" are pretty much the alpha & omega of music

haha rich juzwiak had a good summary at some point of the evolution of janet's thematic concerns, album-by-album. i tried to find it to link on the nominations thread. even when it becomes and sort of stays the sex chronicles with janet there's a lot of variation of focus in the later albums.

last two for today
22. Janet Jackson - What Have You Done for Me Lately? (161 points, 8 votes) Tied with 21 from Control, 1986
― Jamie_ATP, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:08 (1 year ago) Permalink
21. Janet Jackson - Got ‘til It’s Gone (161 points, 8 votes, 1 1st Place Vote) Tied with 22 from The Velvet Rope, 1997
"I'll Be There" was my #1; would've expected a Top 10 finish.
― clemenza, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:09 (1 year ago) Permalink
yay "what have you done for me lately"!!! that has aged better for me than "nasty." is also a much better song than "got 'til it's gone" imo, though i love velvet rope.

Agreed

"empty" should be higher than "got til it's gone," y'all
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:14 (1 year ago) Permalink
Awesome songs today on the whole.
― dead-trius (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:22 (1 year ago) Permalink
Really not hearing "Rhythm Nation, Part 2" in "If." If there's a zero-effort "Rhythm Nation, Part 2," it's the two songs that follow it on the RN1814 album.
― dead-trius (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:23 (1 year ago) Permalink
The main thing "If" has going for it is that psycho-intense filtering on the Supremes sample that turns it into some sort of android killing machine.
― dead-trius (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:24 (1 year ago) Permalink
Uh-oh. Woulda figured at least one of those two Janet songs in the top 10 - and I wouldn't have even been surprised at "What Have You Done" going top 5. Guess I really should've voted for more Janet tracks.
― wolf cola, everyone (thewufs), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:29 (1 year ago) Permalink
So are any Janet songs gonna place top 10?
― wolf cola, everyone (thewufs), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:30 (1 year ago) Permalink
Aside from maybe "That's the Way Love Goes," I mean?
― wolf cola, everyone (thewufs), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:31 (1 year ago) Permalink
Right now, it's looking like "If" is it for the top 10. Maybe "Pleasure Principal."
― dead-trius (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:39 (1 year ago) Permalink
omg, new (old?) pron title
― dead-trius (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:40 (1 year ago) Permalink
Would love "Throb" or "What About" to place, but I think it's probably too late for that now.
― prolego, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:52 (1 year ago) Permalink
Is this going to turn into the Stevie Wonder poll all over again, with Innervisions (or, in this case, Thriller) taking up over half the top 10?
― dead-trius (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:55 (1 year ago) Permalink
I can see "Don't Stop Till Tou Get Enough" winning though.
― prolego, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 19:03 (1 year ago) Permalink
The way these results have been going, it's too soon to make calls, but I'm starting to feel an "I Want You Back" triumph over "Billie Jean."
― dead-trius (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 19:07 (1 year ago) Permalink
"Billie Jean" didn't even win the Thriller poll: THRILLER POLL
i really think "Don't Stop" is gonna take it all, since it's kind of THE Off The Wall hit where most of the other big Michael/Janet albums will kind of have votes split between a bunch of different songs
― TERMAINTOR 2 (some dude), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 19:09 (1 year ago) Permalink
when "PYT" wins I'm going to give you all such a look
― (thinks and smiles) (DJP), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 19:10 (1 year ago) Permalink
My dentist had 'Black or White' on earlier, I think that was a sign.
― Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 19:11 (1 year ago) Permalink
Plenty more from Off the Wall to come, I think (hope). Maybe more than from Thriller?
― Jeff W, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 19:17 (1 year ago) Permalink
i went to an office birthday party today and "PYT" was playing on the stereo, goddamn i love that song
― TERMAINTOR 2 (some dude), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 19:18 (1 year ago) Permalink
there are at least 4 songs from Thriller guaranteed to show up later, i seriously doubt that many from Off The Wall will place this high
― TERMAINTOR 2 (some dude), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 19:21 (1 year ago) Permalink
I dunno how anyone could listen to PYT and not be creeped out by it
― erotic war comedy pollster (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 19:23 (1 year ago) Permalink
Yeah, unless you are receptive to an awesome song full of great hooks.
― dead-trius (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 19:23 (1 year ago) Permalink
haha i was actually gonna say it's amazing that "PYT" hasn't been tainted at all by MJ's later life, at least not for me
― TERMAINTOR 2 (some dude), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 19:23 (1 year ago) Permalink
"Don't Stop" and "Rock With You" are shoo-ins at least.
― Big Mr. Guess U.S.A. Champion (crüt), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 19:25 (1 year ago) Permalink
no doubt. but so are "Billie Jean" and "Beat It" and "Human Nature" and "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'."
― TERMAINTOR 2 (some dude), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 19:26 (1 year ago) Permalink
wait so "Miss You Much" isn't going to place?
― Euler, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 20:05 (1 year ago) Permalink
i honestly have no idea, seems like a 50/50 shot at this point
― TERMAINTOR 2 (some dude), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 20:05 (1 year ago) Permalink
"Miss You Much" is totally a top 20 song, come on
― (thinks and smiles) (DJP), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 20:06 (1 year ago) Permalink
yeah I mean you'd think it's a given
bold prediction: I think "Beat It" won't make this poll
― Euler, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 20:07 (1 year ago) Permalink
you're probably right, but i'd be more confident if i hadn't cut it from my ballot at the last minute (xpost)

"Miss You Much" is my least favorite RN single :(
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 20:08 (1 year ago) Permalink
I love "Beat It" but it's a lot harder for me to separate from the hype when it was new than any other MJ song. plus the video while classic is also hilariously lame: Michael as killer is such a bad look.
― Euler, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 20:09 (1 year ago) Permalink
that is a very weird image to take away from the "Beat It" video

― (thinks and smiles) (DJP), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 20:11 (1 year ago) Permalink
he looked so lame in that vdeo that every teenager in america tried to copy his outfit for years
― TERMAINTOR 2 (some dude), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 20:11 (1 year ago) Permalink
like the entire story of the video was "Michael wanders around town singing to himself before showing up at a rumble to stop it with choreographed dance", I am not quite sure how that translates to "Michael as killer"
― (thinks and smiles) (DJP), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 20:12 (1 year ago) Permalink
imo the bigger question is "which Paul duet cracked the top 20?"
― (thinks and smiles) (DJP), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 20:13 (1 year ago) Permalink
I thought he had a knife! it's been years. & it is true that the look was popular. but I dunno: I'll retreat to the view that "Michael wanders around town singing to himself before showing up at a rumble to stop it with choreographed dance" is hilariously lame
