gotta admit that "Meant to Live" is a prime slice of that late-90s-early-00s, absolutely unironic "emotional" post-post-grunge radio-ready pop-rock goodness. along with like "I Miss You" by blink 182, "Vindicated" by Dashboard Confessional, "Wounded" by Third Eye Blind (fucking flawless song, should've been a huge hit), etc. maybe i should make a playlist of these. the reclamation of unhip realms of music continues.

I am glad you are enjoying yourself. I couldn't even fathom listening to Switchfoot in 2003, let alone nine years later.

(I do like that Blink-182 song tho)
i totally forgot about switchfoot.... i was thinking about yellowcard for some reason yesterday tho
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:29 (twelve years ago) link
didn't like Switchfoot at all at first but "Meant To Live" grew on me and i feel like they've become a really consistent singles act since then -- faves are "Stars," Oh! Gravity," and "The Sound (John M. Perkins' Blues)"
― TERMAINTOR 2 (some dude), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:31 (twelve years ago) link
tbh I'd rather listen to any of the Yellowcard singles before Switchfoot

the first Yellowcard single was great
― (thinks and smiles) (DJP), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:32 (twelve years ago) link
yeah "ocean avenue" is a total classic
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:32 (twelve years ago) link
that's like, the only Yellowcard song worth a damn, though, isn't it?
― TERMAINTOR 2 (some dude), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:34 (twelve years ago) link
lol like I ever listened to another Yellowcard song besides "Ocean Avenue"
― (thinks and smiles) (DJP), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:35 (twelve years ago) link
that's what i'm saying, 'Yellowcard singles' plural is a suspect term
― TERMAINTOR 2 (some dude), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:36 (twelve years ago) link
iirc, "Lights and Sounds" was okay though no patch on "Ocean Avenue", though damned if I can remember how it goes right now.
― Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:37 (twelve years ago) link
"Lights and Sounds" actually charted higher than "Ocean Avenue" on the alternative chart (#4 vs #15)
― Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:38 (twelve years ago) link
yeah "Ocean Avenue" was one of those sleeper hits that never charted proportionally to its popularity. "Lights And Sounds" was fucking terrible imo.
― TERMAINTOR 2 (some dude), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:39 (twelve years ago) link
I think I need to pull it up on YouTube again, maybe I'm conflating it with something else.
― Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:39 (twelve years ago) link
Okay, yeah, I don't know which song I was thinking, this is pretty bad.
― Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:42 (twelve years ago) link
And b Debut, you mena major label debut. It was actually their fourth album.
― MarkoP, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:48 (twelve years ago) link
i like "way away" about as much as "ocean avenue" (which is to say, a lot) but they're a totally worthless band otherwise
― Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:49 (twelve years ago) link
These threads are fun because I get to visit Yellowcard's wiki page and see that they are still going and have now released seven(!) albums.

anyway some dude otm about switchfoot as a singles band. i still don't like "meant to live" (and i remember hearing "dare you to move" a lot more and that song is just ugh, "meant to live" in slow motion)
― Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:50 (twelve years ago) link
yeah "way away" is really good as well imo
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:51 (twelve years ago) link
by god, MarkoP, yr right. back catalog, here i come!!! (or maybe not.)
― caulk the wagon and float it, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:15 (twelve years ago) link
i should've just made this original post about "Wounded", that's the real song we should all be talking about here. it's got like 15 melodic hooks that could each hold together a solid single on their own.

that late-90s-early-00s, absolutely unironic "emotional" post-post-grunge radio-ready pop-rock
i don't know that i've ever loved a song that fit this description
― Little GTFO (contenderizer), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:37 (twelve years ago) link
i mean, i like alice in chains' "check my brain", but it's very ironic and retro 70's
― Little GTFO (contenderizer), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:42 (twelve years ago) link
this is the song that made me go woah, Switchfoot might actually be kind of fun and not all post-grunge slog:

"Everlong" is the crown jewel of late-90s-early-00s, absolutely unironic "emotional" post-post-grunge radio-ready pop-rock
― TERMAINTOR 2 (some dude), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 19:01 (twelve years ago) link
yeah i was thinking more on the whiny end of the spectrum than that but that's a good call
― caulk the wagon and float it, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 19:20 (twelve years ago) link
i like a lot of this shit obv
― markers, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 19:30 (twelve years ago) link
postgrunge is all that matters
― markers, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 19:31 (twelve years ago) link
"wounded" is an awesome song with no chorus.
― Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 21:02 (twelve years ago) link
it's just like, pure escalations, from those early shiny curls of guitar to the end where it's all confident walking bombast
