great AFLAC commercial

gabbneb, Sunday, 6 April 2008 22:20 (sixteen years ago) link

I like the green white flag but Carl Edwards has the personality of a drilled out wheel well. And no burnout.

If I wanted to watch back flips I would watch diving.

felicity, Monday, 7 April 2008 15:47 (sixteen years ago) link

On the lighter side, Kyle wins another Nationwide race with no tires shocker!

felicity, Monday, 7 April 2008 15:47 (sixteen years ago) link

How about Michael McDowell walking away from that monster wreck on Friday?

Kerm, Monday, 7 April 2008 15:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Awesome! I wish Z C would turn that into an animated gif. I think of him as Michael McDonald, Mr. Backup driver.

felicity, Monday, 7 April 2008 16:03 (sixteen years ago) link

or Z S even

I like Carl's flat plains style, if not his hokey gun-happiness. I don't think burnout is in his vocabulary. Where's his workout video?

I would like to see a victory interpretive dance.

gabbneb, Monday, 7 April 2008 16:51 (sixteen years ago) link

The only interesting thing. About Carl is that he is always only one Matt Kenseth passive aggressive baiting away from evolving into aggro steroid-HGH CARL-Hulk.

Lol at low man on Rousch Fenway totem pole David Ragan always sucking up to Carl in interviews. Biffle and Kenseth are tight, it is clear that Carl is the Tuomas of that race team.

felicity, Monday, 7 April 2008 18:25 (sixteen years ago) link

'roid rage Carl is pretty scary. Is it bait-susceptibility? Maybe from Matt's pov. I think Carl's perspective is tunnel-vision - if you're in his way, he'll give you a gentle prod, but if you're blocking his agenda, he gets mad. If someone can't accept the fact that he's faster, he'll make concrete the fact that he's stronger too. He's not just another NASCAR driver, but Smilin' Carl Edwards, Inc., NASCAR affiliate. Not that I think that it's right.

maybe Roush Fenway is the D&D kids' table in the cafeteria, and Carl is the above-it-all afterschool karate black belt of the group.

gabbneb, Monday, 7 April 2008 19:37 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, Kenseth's the most plausible-denial passive-aggressive mf in Cup.

He even got to Gordon at Bristol one year.

felicity, Monday, 7 April 2008 19:40 (sixteen years ago) link

The one thing Carl does not understand is the importance, over the season, of making friends or at least creating doubt in his potential enemies. Has he ever won one a plate track??

felicity, Monday, 7 April 2008 19:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Well, he's certainly passed the can-run-up-front test, but that's not the same as friend-making. Maybe he's betting he can win without it. He seems friendly enough with mellower and more pliable Rowdy, who does pretty well himself.

Oh yeah, Kenseth's the most plausible-denial passive-aggressive mf in Cup

I thought he was just kinda squirrely-inscrutable, but I've never really paid too much attention. I can see it.

gabbneb, Monday, 7 April 2008 19:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh he's hysterical on radio.

Matt to Spotter: Am I clear?
Matt's Spotter: I can't see anything.
Matt: Ok, I'll let you know if I see anything you need to know about.

felicity, Monday, 7 April 2008 19:54 (sixteen years ago) link

lol

gabbneb, Monday, 7 April 2008 19:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, DISH commercial is pretty true to life.

Kenseth really gets inside Carl's head, telling him on team radio that he should let him by, stay out for a lead lap, etc. and then when Carl expects reciprocation he won't.

felicity, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 00:14 (sixteen years ago) link

well that doesn't sound very nice. Matt seems so mild.

I haven't seen or don't remember the DISH commercial

gabbneb, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 00:39 (sixteen years ago) link

I know. He seems so bland yet he can take it to the point where he makes people lose it.

let's see if this works.

he aint a fag dude, he's like tiger woods, just something different about him

f word not cool

felicity, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 02:31 (sixteen years ago) link

By the way, there's been plenty of times earlier in his career where he did take off his helmet and went at it, so seriously, shut up.

a special link for u

gabbneb, Thursday, 10 April 2008 17:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Not busting your chops, but what are you pointing at? (I do agree with the guy who said Texas last week was too long didn't watch.)

Hope phoenix will be better. I am going.

Carl Edwards is such a cipher. Video simulators have more personality. If he wins Cup I may go off it for a while.

felicity, Thursday, 10 April 2008 21:59 (sixteen years ago) link

Not busting your chops, but what are you pointing at?

the CoT's role in boringness-production, as originally argued in the article linked at the top of the link. perhaps that, rather than Kyle Busch or Kelly Clarkson, accounts for the falloff in viewership.

Phx shd be fun.

gabbneb, Thursday, 10 April 2008 22:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Naw, only old school crusties like the twisted sister. CoT is much more interesting racing.

It's the boring tracks like Texas and Poconos that turn people off. Heritage Southern fans hate Poconos because it cost them the Darlington 500 and its too tedious to attract new race fans.

Adding a second Vegas race was a good move. Poconos has 2 races too many. Who wants to watch it rain on 42 cars parked around a 3 mile triangle? Twisted sister car parked for rain delay is still a parked car.

At least it won't rain in Phoenix.

felicity, Thursday, 10 April 2008 22:37 (sixteen years ago) link

I think the contention would be that the viewing audience is significantly comprised of old school crusties

I still might go get rained on at Pocono

gabbneb, Thursday, 10 April 2008 23:14 (sixteen years ago) link

What contention. The reason NASCAR has been moving the schedule around and pushing the Northeastern races has been to enlarge the audience.

Poconos would be a race very much in character for you.

I have $5 big ones riding on Biff at Vegas to win Sprint Cup. Biffle was going off at 35-1, absurdly short.

The lack of Hendrick's dominance this has been the biggest surprise of the year to me.

felicity, Thursday, 10 April 2008 23:23 (sixteen years ago) link

What contention

mine that tv viewership is down as of last year in part due to the CoT

Poconos would be a race very much in character for you.

how so?

gabbneb, Thursday, 10 April 2008 23:25 (sixteen years ago) link

It just is.

felicity, Thursday, 10 April 2008 23:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Well, there must be some reason.

gabbneb, Thursday, 10 April 2008 23:32 (sixteen years ago) link

I just can't believe you would choose Poconos over Richmond as your first race.

felicity, Thursday, 10 April 2008 23:36 (sixteen years ago) link

well, I may very well not, but it doesn't look like Richmond I will be an option for me this year, and I can go to Pocono for 1/3 the cost in time+money

gabbneb, Thursday, 10 April 2008 23:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Just don't blame me if you hate NASCAR after you do.

felicity, Thursday, 10 April 2008 23:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Unexpected NASCAR indie rock moment: tailgaters near us in the Phoenix Raceway parking lot blasting Amsterdam by Peter, Bjorn & John.

Rumor is that Tony Stewart and Christy Wallace are an item. Supposedly Ashley Judd is here.

Rumor is that Tony Stewart and Christy Wallace are an item

aw. so Tara Roqu3more is off again?

gabbneb, Saturday, 12 April 2008 21:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah and J.J.Yeley's sister, who works with my brother. Seems Tony is quite the ladies' man.

felicity, Monday, 14 April 2008 02:39 (sixteen years ago) link

oh to be short, chubby and rich

milo z, Monday, 14 April 2008 02:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Great race. First win for Hendrick. Gordon continues to have bad cars. Chad Knaus's gamble on fuel strategy paid off. The 48 had no gas left after the burnout, so the car had to be pushed into victory lane by a tow truck.

After the race, Truex was badmouthing DEI Engines to his crew over the radio:

MTJ: The 8 should have won.
Crew: Yeah.
MTJ: Did the 31 make it? [on gas, referring to another Chevy team]
Crew: Yeah.
MTJ: [Referring to DEI Engines] They don't run and they run out of gas.
Crew:
MTJ: Are we on radio?
Scanner: (turns off)

Ganassi and Petty Racing are in death spirals. They don't qualify, they lose sponsors (General Mills just defected to Childress), so they can't build the good engines, they don't get the Glengarry leads . . . etc.

So unfair that because Carl Edwards' crew chief was caught cheating with the oil tank cover Edwards now gets an even better crew chief, Robbie Reiser during the suspension. Bleah.

felicity, Monday, 14 April 2008 02:52 (sixteen years ago) link

oh to be short, chubby and rich

http://hickorymotorspeedway.com/2007/results07_photos/6_2LMWin.jpg

Chrissy Wallace isn't that chubby, milo.

felicity, Monday, 14 April 2008 03:02 (sixteen years ago) link

haw!

Chad is a mathlete now. Carl did pretty well on a shorter track, huh? getting Robbie as crew chief sounds like the Chicago Way. my parents were not mollified by the duck car when the baseball game was rudely preempted, tho. :(

i am hoping the Ganassi and Petty sputtering results in the revival of Tony Raines

gabbneb, Monday, 14 April 2008 14:00 (sixteen years ago) link

Chad Knaus has always been very smart.

felicity, Monday, 14 April 2008 16:28 (sixteen years ago) link
