It really underscores how far things have gone when you hear Dizzy referred to as the second longest standing member of GNR.

I'd think Tommy Stinson at this point might have been in GNR as long as some of the others. It still weirds me out that he has been in GNR for like 10 years now. I'd love to have a time machine to go back to like '87 and bet him that he would end up in that band.

What happened to Duff's book? That seems the most promising of the lot.

Duff's book is good. But not really about Guns, though. At least not after the first 150 pages or so. And it's low on stories ala "the Dirt". But most of those are known by now anyway. The boook is more of a "how I learnt to live again"-type of story. But he's a likeable guy, Mr. McKagan, and it's pretty well written. Lots about his Seattle-roots too..

I read Duff's book also. Its a decent read, but I wish he had been a bit less diplomatic about everything. Like he barely mentions anything about the Illusions sessions. I wanted to hear how a dude from the Seattle punk scene explains how he ends up playing stuff like "November Rain" but I guess at the same time it seems like he was barely functioning from 1989 to 1993.

Yeah, I guess he only touches upon that. Illusions happened because Izzy opted out and nobody besides Axl really cared, or were able to contribute anything at all, really.. But he's a tad too diplomatic, I agree. It might have something to do with the fact that the different relationships are finally getting better (story with Axl in London) and that he's too nice of a guy..?

Between Duff's, Slash's, and Steven's books, you get a pretty good triangulation of what went on, but yeah, not really enough on the Illusions stuff. I think that in addition to being a nice guy, Duff is also a total dork.

Doing anything other than walking on eggshells with Axl generally results in immediate shutdown of all communication/a torrent of verbal threats/onstage disses/bad-mouthing in the media/the occasional millon-dollar lawsuit, so yeah, there might be something to that idea.

Duff strikes me as the wisest and most personable of the original quintet, and with the HOF induction coming up, he has a vested interest in not getting on Axl's bad side. When Axl is pissed, the motherfucker doesn't burn bridges, he nukes them.

somedude, I was referring to Duff's book specifically, but really I don't think any of them go into the recording sessions for Illusions the way they did for Appetite.

I have a feeling going into the recording sessions for Illusions is not extricable from stepping on Axl's toes.

I hope the group's inducted early with Axl hiding backstage, and then an hour and a half later, Axl just walks out on stage - oblivious to whatever's happening on it - and does that slow building scream at the beginning of "Jungle"

I'm guessing the Nirvana two will be teary and proud, and it looks like g'n'r will treat this like a class reunion. I hope instead of listing the infinite number of rappers that belonged in the hallowed hall before them, the beasties just lip-sync to "Fight For Your Right" and smash the mics a la American Bandstand.

i mean it'd be great if if courtney, krist and dave would go through "smells" and "heart shaped box" after screaming "HEY AXL, WHERE'S AXL?" from the podium, but I'm guessing Dave's spent too much time with the Macca for that to happen now, and Krist will probably be on his best behavior for Kurt's memory. Courtney remains an x factor.

Gah, why are people even pretending that this reunion will be anything more than the literal "all the original members of the band in the same room" sort? There is no way Axl (who just turned 50, btw!) gives a shit about the other guys. I just saw GNR a week ago - it was exhausting/robotic - and Axl seems pretty cozy with his current set-up, which seemed designed/built to work around his exact eccentric specifications. Like them letting him leave the stage every minute, or letting his lame guitarists cover the Henry Mancini and John Barry. He and Tommy seem like best buds.
