i snagged the "Killing Time" 12" EP at my favorite record shop in the nearby large town last weekend.

agree that "Mazes" is the best release from Ripley's universe so far...

Moon Duo: YES

i feel like they built this band in a lab specifically for me

I am lightly put off by the pamplamoosey couple in this video, but it is otherwise v enjoyable

also: saw them this past weekend and it was great, with (DELL) projector and everything. very fun to watch. i felt like i was in a really cool movie except there weren't enough people dancing.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 13:39 (eleven years ago) link

I don't like the video but the album is immensely pleasurable.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 13:47 (eleven years ago) link

I like the video because I like dancing, but it's a little fluffy/daytime for me. Would rather just watch the band play if I have to watch something. Video aside, this is top notch music for dancing.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 13:49 (eleven years ago) link

ok then I'm def going to this show tonight!

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 14:05 (eleven years ago) link

Jealous of you all. Still would love to see Moon Duo or Wooden Shjips. Watching their sets on youtube ain't the same.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 14:19 (eleven years ago) link

It was totally worth it, saw a bunch of people there alone even though it was a Friday night (so I didn't feel too weird) and also some guy with recording equipment. I should have talked to him to find out what he does with the recordings. Anyway, you will have a good time at the show!! You must go.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 14:31 (eleven years ago) link

something about the combination of the song with the trendy alt-video really brings to mind Clinic

remtrollison (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:11 (eleven years ago) link

the new album was playing over the pa today during my lunchour vs fopp session.

sounded bloody good.

mark e, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:15 (eleven years ago) link

haw, that video should have a disclaimer -- "from the makers of portlandia" or somesuch. anyway, this album rocks!

tylerw, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:17 (eleven years ago) link

yeah -- it smells strongly of portlandia
but just think about the leotards and the gyrating rather than the guru or the window (or the mustache dude) and it gets better
better yet don't watch it at all and take a look at this cover

innocuous thing that makes me irrationally angry: fuzzed-out pop packaged itself as though it were mind-warping psych. Also: the american apparel aesthetic of the video above. Still, decent song.

rhythmic pop can be mind warping too if you give in to the groove

stop swearing and start windmilling (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:22 (eleven years ago) link

I feel Hurting's sentiment. "Psych" is a word that gets thrown about a lot these days. I love Moon Duo though; even though it's trippy-by-the-numbers synth-driven drone-pop, it's trippy enough for my liking.

gesange der yuengling (crüt), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:26 (eleven years ago) link

my first thought was that it was dance music to satisfy the robots and the freaky people alike. your bottom half can follow the beat and your top half can freak out to the guitar. that's good times right there.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:30 (eleven years ago) link

That cover is kind of terrible but I love it.

emil.y, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:31 (eleven years ago) link

i see 'psych' used in a lot of pr material/press releases and then i go listen to a song or two online and am like fuck you, pr people, this is just indie rock

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:33 (eleven years ago) link

i guess 'psych' is the new 'edgy'

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:34 (eleven years ago) link

or, well, 'indie'

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:34 (eleven years ago) link

totally agree but buzzword overuse/misuse is not a new problem and it's not going to get in the way of my enjoyment of the moon duo.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:36 (eleven years ago) link

totally

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:36 (eleven years ago) link

i do think there are psych elements to moon duo tho!

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:37 (eleven years ago) link

That cover is kind of terrible but I love it.

the cover is amazing IMO!

gesange der yuengling (crüt), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:39 (eleven years ago) link

I've noticed 'psych' or 'psychedelic' being appended to indie bands much less than it used to be in, say, the Elephant 6 era... Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places, I like indie shit with psychy bits.

emil.y, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:39 (eleven years ago) link

psych enough for me! the drum machine-iness might bring down the psych quotient, i dunno.

tylerw, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:41 (eleven years ago) link

I still see "psych"/"psychedelic" on the label of like every fifth rock/indie promo CD I review. But I see a lot of things on promo labels.

gesange der yuengling (crüt), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:41 (eleven years ago) link

this is the dude from Wooden Shjips, right?

love their first EP...i would call it psych in a Bardo Pond / trippier Black Mountain vein. I.e. laid-back, groovin' psych.

just had a listen to the new LP via spotify...i dig. definitely poppier, though it's still nice and fuzzy.

QFT: "buzzword overuse/misuse is not a new problem and it's not going to get in the way of my enjoyment of the moon duo."

dronestreet, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:43 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i mean it's PR shorthand for "there's some fuzzy guitar reverb-y vocals and maybe a swirly organ every now and then"...but have we ever really defined psych? WHAT IS PSYCH.

tylerw, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:43 (eleven years ago) link

i think that what we can learn from pr shorthand is that pr shorthand is hilarious and mostly wrong

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:46 (eleven years ago) link

psych is what you make it man

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:46 (eleven years ago) link

(pr people not allowed to make it)

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:46 (eleven years ago) link

pr people too uptight to give in to the groove

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:49 (eleven years ago) link

here's something from the PR email i just received
"A laid-back cavalcade of synth washes, toms, layered vocals and organic instrumentation, "SONG" perfectly showcases ARTIST’s ambitions to bring together futuristic soundscapes with hook-laden direct songs."
sounds kinda psyche-y!

tylerw, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:51 (eleven years ago) link

i read something recently that contained a sentence something like "dare we say they sound like early Hawkwind mixed with Can?!" and seriously, considering the band they were talking about, my answer is no, you do not.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:53 (eleven years ago) link

So I should spend my hard earned music journalist dollars on this?

Hamster of Legend (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 20:08 (eleven years ago) link

I like the new one despite them having bi virtually no personality or unique sonic identity at all.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 15 March 2017 18:09 (seven years ago) link

they put on a good show, worth seeing (even if it's weird that there's no drummer).

A lot of softer textures, less aggressive guitars, all the ingredients are still there but the proportions are different. This is the first album of theirs that sounds different from all the rest to my ears.

I kind of hope we treat these two volumes as one single double-release for the eoy rollouts. I wish they would've been ballsy enough to release it that way.

I don’t know if I’m on board with the new album. Feels like some sort of indie version of U2’s pop. As if they’re trying to make some sort of psychedelic disco album but ultimately it ends up sounding overwrought and it’s drenched in way too much effects. It’s dizzying... not in a good way.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 30 September 2019 05:22 (four years ago) link

huh, this is quite different to what i knew of them (which admittedly I heard years ago now)
