also: saw them this past weekend and it was great, with (DELL) projector and everything. very fun to watch. i felt like i was in a really cool movie except there weren't enough people dancing.

I don't like the video but the album is immensely pleasurable.

I like the video because I like dancing, but it's a little fluffy/daytime for me. Would rather just watch the band play if I have to watch something. Video aside, this is top notch music for dancing.

It was totally worth it, saw a bunch of people there alone even though it was a Friday night (so I didn't feel too weird) and also some guy with recording equipment. I should have talked to him to find out what he does with the recordings. Anyway, you will have a good time at the show!! You must go.

yeah -- it smells strongly of portlandia
but just think about the leotards and the gyrating rather than the guru or the window (or the mustache dude) and it gets better

I feel Hurting's sentiment. "Psych" is a word that gets thrown about a lot these days. I love Moon Duo though; even though it's trippy-by-the-numbers synth-driven drone-pop, it's trippy enough for my liking.

my first thought was that it was dance music to satisfy the robots and the freaky people alike. your bottom half can follow the beat and your top half can freak out to the guitar. that's good times right there.

I've noticed 'psych' or 'psychedelic' being appended to indie bands much less than it used to be in, say, the Elephant 6 era... Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places, I like indie shit with psychy bits.

I still see "psych"/"psychedelic" on the label of like every fifth rock/indie promo CD I review. But I see a lot of things on promo labels.

love their first EP...i would call it psych in a Bardo Pond / trippier Black Mountain vein. I.e. laid-back, groovin' psych.

yeah i mean it's PR shorthand for "there's some fuzzy guitar reverb-y vocals and maybe a swirly organ every now and then"...but have we ever really defined psych? WHAT IS PSYCH.

i think that what we can learn from pr shorthand is that pr shorthand is hilarious and mostly wrong

i read something recently that contained a sentence something like "dare we say they sound like early Hawkwind mixed with Can?!" and seriously, considering the band they were talking about, my answer is no, you do not.

So I should spend my hard earned music journalist dollars on this?

I like the new one despite them having bi virtually no personality or unique sonic identity at all.

they put on a good show, worth seeing (even if it's weird that there's no drummer).

i love every moon duo album for about a week. then i never want to hear them again.

A lot of softer textures, less aggressive guitars, all the ingredients are still there but the proportions are different. This is the first album of theirs that sounds different from all the rest to my ears.

got both Vols I and II and yeah II def has some departures from their signature style. interesting! both are grebt

I kind of hope we treat these two volumes as one single double-release for the eoy rollouts. I wish they would've been ballsy enough to release it that way.

I don’t know if I’m on board with the new album. Feels like some sort of indie version of U2’s pop. As if they’re trying to make some sort of psychedelic disco album but ultimately it ends up sounding overwrought and it’s drenched in way too much effects. It’s dizzying... not in a good way.

in retrospect, this band's work is a pretty good study on how to run a couple of good ideas into the ground

yeah i love this record. very surprised that my two favorite 2019 albums are Ripley Johnson projects (Rose City Band is really great), as I haven't been into any Moon Duo or Shjips stuff in a while.

Rose City Band is definitely great too! Yeah, it's been a really good year for Ripley, especially considering the two vastly different directions he's swinging.

definitely a shift with this one. Sonic Boom's second career as a mixing-engineer-for-hire continues to produce some interesting results
