He reminds me SO MUCH (especially in the grain of his voice but even his flow) of a mid-'90s MC I used to listen to a lot that I cannot recall... I only had his stuff on some now long-lost mixtapes my buddy made me...

Does any of this stuff come out on vinyl? I wanna give these dudes some $$$ somehow, preferably not via iTunes...

the production on section80 was kind of hokey to me in parts, v grandiose & all that

yeah, this annoyed me, the R&B gloss

I know I wasn't that hot on Setbacks, but Habits and Contradictions is awesome.

hella on board w/this

Yeah, love this album too. Really dig how expressive Q is, even most of his adlibs feel like the pitch and aesthetic has been just so carefully considered. And the production is sick pretty much top to bottom.

u wrong for this

D-40, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 07:45 (twelve years ago) link

The two albums strike me as both good and quite similar.

Tim F, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 07:50 (twelve years ago) link

xp ok you're right, the new album sux

marissa explains it all (The Reverend), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 07:56 (twelve years ago) link

god it feels like every rap thread i go in contains deej telling someone they're rong or their opinion is weird for enjoying rapper x or preferring album y

lex pretend, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 07:59 (twelve years ago) link

i also preferred habits & contradictions slightly, setbacks took a few listens to settle while H&C was pretty immediate

lex pretend, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:00 (twelve years ago) link

thats completely backwards though. sorry for telling you you're wrong but ... H&C is a much less immediate record

D-40, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:19 (twelve years ago) link

they're both good obv

D-40, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:20 (twelve years ago) link

but whatever makes you feel better about sleeping on the 1st one & justifying it in retrospect

D-40, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:20 (twelve years ago) link

people have different responses to music

marissa explains it all (The Reverend), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:26 (twelve years ago) link

sorry to blow your mind but

marissa explains it all (The Reverend), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:26 (twelve years ago) link

dog cmon. lex accusing me of this is clearly some kind of practical joke -- his entire argumentative style is 'i'm right you're wrong' so i just went w/ it here

D-40, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:29 (twelve years ago) link

but if you want to discuss the contents of the record, joints like 'kamikaze' and 'fantasy' have much more traditional pop sounds to them than pretty much anything on this record, which goes in a much more oblique / abstract direction, IMHO

D-40, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:30 (twelve years ago) link

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjOkdZVj98A

there's def more of a traditional, IMMEDIATE banger feel to these joints than the trippy kinetic weirdness of

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oYwf5y9DFg

thats not saying one is better than the other inherently, i just happened to prefer the former approach personally, although I like both records. I do have trouble understanding how you can hear the weirder approach of this record as being a step towards 'immediacy' though, or i'm at least going to need you guys to explain more clearly what you mean by that term b/c i think its kind of self-evident how the two records split along these lines

D-40, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:33 (twelve years ago) link

xp that may be my problem with them? both those sound pretty rote to me compared to what's on this album

marissa explains it all (The Reverend), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:34 (twelve years ago) link

what song you know sounds like 'fantasy'?? thats a completely unique & amazing track

D-40, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:35 (twelve years ago) link

i dunno what in particular, but it definitely has that "non-mainstream rapper makes begrudging and half-assed attempt at mainstream song" vibe that always has put me off, even if the particulars might be a bit different, and the hook falls stupid flat.

marissa explains it all (The Reverend), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:40 (twelve years ago) link

the song w/ jhene on the new one is way better imo

marissa explains it all (The Reverend), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:41 (twelve years ago) link

its way weirder & the groove is considerably less sexual &, say, IMMEDIATE

D-40, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:44 (twelve years ago) link

what is 'half assed' about it?

D-40, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:44 (twelve years ago) link

i mean you're only talking abt my favorite song of last year, is it any wonder i'm like "wtf u wrong" when dudes start a thread about the artist on his 2nd record after the Pfork bnm & intense media hype & suddenly everyone's coming up w/ excuses why this is the better record

D-40, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:46 (twelve years ago) link

I listened to his record and was unimpressed with it last year, dog. Didn't even know he was BNMed either. You don't have to second-guess everything.

marissa explains it all (The Reverend), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:48 (twelve years ago) link

ok so on our original point, 'immediate' means, 'i liked it more right away', but isnt an intrinsic quality of the actual music, but i'm saying that it was more immediate in the pop sense, and that's something i value while you tend to value perhaps a more abstract approach from this partic. artist

D-40, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:50 (twelve years ago) link

blah reword

for you,
immediate simply meant, 'i liked it more right away'

i meant 'immediate' as an actual characteristic of music that was aiming for a more pop immediacy,

for me, this is something valued, while you might place more of a value on abstraction in this particular artist,

and now we have both agreed 2 disagree

schoolboy q just kind of drones, jhene sounds uninvested, and it's really small-sounding, fades into the background easily

marissa explains it all (The Reverend), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:52 (twelve years ago) link

xp, yeah, that's probably right

marissa explains it all (The Reverend), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:53 (twelve years ago) link

"Kamikaze" and (especially) "Fantasy" are def. my favourite tracks on Setbacks.

"Fantasy" is pretty much perfect, esp. that bit where the beat gets all muted and fuzzy like you're listening from inside the womb.

Tim F, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 09:46 (twelve years ago) link

I immediately loved both Setbacks and Habits & Contradictions

Vaseline MEN AMAZING JOURNEY (DJP), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 15:54 (twelve years ago) link

this album really isn't all that

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 29 February 2012 16:05 (twelve years ago) link

mostly i don't get why everyone is falling all over themselves to talk about how good the production is... i think some of the beats are really corny

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 29 February 2012 16:08 (twelve years ago) link

if not corny than at least just kinda off-putting... sorta like the danny brown record except without the implicit acknowledgement that some of the beats are supposed to piss you off

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 29 February 2012 16:10 (twelve years ago) link

(idk beats on the danny brown are great)

like H&C much more than setbacks, probably because of the production...

sisilafami, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 17:09 (twelve years ago) link

i feel like the production is more ear-catching on H&C and schoolboy q stretches himself vocally a lot more too - the songs have a lot more unexpected twists and tangents that keep you interested and the beats are pretty incredible.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 21:38 (twelve years ago) link

did u know? H&C is a prequel to Setbacks. Makes you think eh?

new album out today--it felt like there was a weird lack of hype for this one, idk why.

mourning joe (voodoo chili), Friday, 26 April 2019 14:52 (five years ago) link

gave it a full listen this morning. feels low-stakes and fragmented compared to Blank Face. some good moments and cool production but weirdly unambitious. some grating hooks, too.

Simon H., Friday, 26 April 2019 14:57 (five years ago) link

yeah, i figured from the pre-released tracks that it wouldn't be as ambitious or eclectic as blank face, but whatever, every artist reserves the right to make minor works every once in a while.

mourning joe (voodoo chili), Friday, 26 April 2019 14:58 (five years ago) link

I don't think he's charming enough to coast through bang average material or something. what a disappointment :(

calzino, Friday, 26 April 2019 15:17 (five years ago) link

yeah, this is pretty listless, with a couple exceptions (5200, Numb Numb Juice, maybe the Cudi collab).
