i like some of his songs, still think it's weird/disheartening when a rapper uses the word "fags" and no one seems to think it's a problem, not really interested in a big discussion about it because i know it's been talked to death but i'm just tired of it. sorry.

I didn't like Section 80 at all but am curious about this dude

What did you not like about it?

granted I only listened to it twice but I really did not dig the production

'blessed' off the new schoolboy q is really nice effort from both of these guys actually

I haven't heard the new Schoolboy Q album, but the production on Setbacks seems pretty slight compared to Section.80 to me. And Kendrick is a lot more charismatic and a better songwriter imo.

the production on the new schoolboy is pretty cool and even tho i wouldn't agree i'd hear an argument that from that standpoint it trumps section.80, but in any other facet i think it's kendrick by a pretty large margin

kendrick is just a much better songwriter... q hits on some good stuff on a few songs on the album but it's still pretty amateurish in a lot of places to me

and not amateurish in a way that i guess i'm attracted to... just sorta skating by on 'vibe' and all that

yeah kendrick made some real corny choices on section.80 but i don't think it's a huge deal

This is basically what it boils down to for me. His voice is v engaging/unique.

Having said this, SQ's new album is probably my favorite release so far this year.

Yeah, love this album too. Really dig how expressive Q is, even most of his adlibs feel like the pitch and aesthetic has been just so carefully considered. And the production is sick pretty much top to bottom.

The two albums strike me as both good and quite similar.

god it feels like every rap thread i go in contains deej telling someone they're rong or their opinion is weird for enjoying rapper x or preferring album y

i also preferred habits & contradictions slightly, setbacks took a few listens to settle while H&C was pretty immediate

thats completely backwards though. sorry for telling you you're wrong but ... H&C is a much less immediate record

they're both good obv

but whatever makes you feel better about sleeping on the 1st one & justifying it in retrospect

i don't know what i think yet, it did sound aimless as i've seen said, but strong, likely a grower

I felt like that at first, it is deffo a grower and has a lot of strength in depth.

can't tell if there's anything as good as 'man of the year' or 'collard greens' but there was a huge gap between those 2 and the next best track on oxymoron, this is way more consistent

I can't believe how much better than Oxymoron this is, replace THat Part with the Black Hippy remix and drop the (sadly ignorable) Miguel collab and it's even better

new album out today--it felt like there was a weird lack of hype for this one, idk why.

gave it a full listen this morning. feels low-stakes and fragmented compared to Blank Face. some good moments and cool production but weirdly unambitious. some grating hooks, too.

yeah, i figured from the pre-released tracks that it wouldn't be as ambitious or eclectic as blank face, but whatever, every artist reserves the right to make minor works every once in a while.

I don't think he's charming enough to coast through bang average material or something. what a disappointment :(

yeah, this is pretty listless, with a couple exceptions (5200, Numb Numb Juice, maybe the Cudi collab).
