listening to the single 'capricornia', her personality moved back in the mix, maybe this will be more of a band record? has a bit of the lucksmiths nostalgic geography thing going while sounding more 80s jangly than they have before. sadly they are not playing near here on their US tour.

I'll be curious to hear what you think of that Cloud Nothings Sick, I'm head over heels for it myself.

Veronica Falls are more twee than I said above, but not annoyingly so.

Wasted Days off the new Cloud Nothings is The Shit. Another fine Albini sound-engineering jobby.

I quite like that Allo Darlin' track, was a little different than expected.

The new Standard Fare album took a while but proved itself a grower. First three tracks awesome from the go though. They are so great live.

Although it is difficult to stop oneself from substituting 'Danzig' for 'Dancing'.

Quite liking this new Wedding Present track. More than the "You Jane" single anyway.

are you ready for a little spittle? (electricsound), Sunday, 12 February 2012 23:18 (twelve years ago) link

^going to check out Standard Fare's album based on above.

Been listening to Chairlift's newest a ton the past two weeks. Not every song is a keeper, but more than half are fantastic.

musicfanatic, Sunday, 12 February 2012 23:41 (twelve years ago) link

is there a rolling goth thread? the new Soap & Skin mini-lp is excellent. she's still so young. which are the other great austrians in pop/indie music? apart from Falco of course.

keythhtyek, Monday, 13 February 2012 00:33 (twelve years ago) link

there is this thread but no 2012 equiv yet

Rolling 2011 Goth / Post-Goth / Darkwave / Dark Neopostpunk / Deathrock etc. etc. Thread!

Go Polica! I will always root for local bands to do well on the national stage.

monster_xero, Friday, 17 February 2012 17:48 (twelve years ago) link

Finally listening to this Cloud Nothings.

This is exactly like the kind of cd I would've bought in 1995 for $2 in a cut-out bin because it looked neat or was on a cool label, and then I would listen to it once and never again. There's really no meat on this bone.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 17 February 2012 18:10 (twelve years ago) link

I couldn't disagree with that more, I've listened to that about 10 times so far and I keep going back for more. Its fantastic.

Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 17 February 2012 21:20 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, um I kinda expect to be in the minority re: Cloud Nothings.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 17 February 2012 21:24 (twelve years ago) link

i don't think it's as good as the earlier stuff

any thoughts on the terry malts lp on slumberland?

too many tracks from the singles imo but a fun black tambouriney kinda vibe prevails

Liking this new 2:54 song. Kind of Lushy, kind of Warpainty.

Feebs K-Tel (NickB), Friday, 24 February 2012 23:14 (twelve years ago) link

I like the Terry Malts on one listen all through, not had chance to absorb it quite yet though.

Tunabunny were ridiculously good the other night, looking forward to digesting 'Minima Moralia' in full now I've finally got a copy.

Cragenham Craig (Craigo Boingo), Saturday, 25 February 2012 23:50 (twelve years ago) link

not really feeling Terry Malts, too much Ramones sound and not enough Ramones hooks.

skip, Sunday, 26 February 2012 19:07 (twelve years ago) link

I figured out Terry Malts sounds like Smoking Popes vs. Jay Reatard.

Also, I've decided that Memoryhouse is one of the lamest "cool" bands going right now.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 26 February 2012 20:20 (twelve years ago) link

I just noticed that the press release for the Lincoln Center thing way upthread claims that Bill Callahan has earned the nickname "the John Wayne of indie-rock." I've never heard that, and can't find any reference to it aside from press releases. I wonder if Bill Callahan is trying to claim the nickname "the John Wayne of indie-rock."

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 26 February 2012 20:48 (twelve years ago) link

i've decided that new slumberland is just not for me. apart from the lodger I am not much for anything they have released in their new incarnation. it's all pretty decent but it doesn't seem like anything that bears repeated listening. but then i don't like anything on captured tracks either and everyone loves that stuff so maybe it has all passed me by.

keythhtyek, Monday, 27 February 2012 00:11 (twelve years ago) link

for me CT has put out a lot of very very good records but nothing classic yet.

surprised you don't like gold bears and sea lions. seems like they'd be up your alley.

i thought the neverever ep was trash. cannot stand her voice anymore.

‎~=(,,_,,):3 (electricsound), Monday, 27 February 2012 00:22 (twelve years ago) link

Also, I've decided that Memoryhouse is one of the lamest "cool" bands going right now.

i thought their earlier stuff was really lovely, but the hype is out of control and i would say that sub pop is not the label for them.

‎~=(,,_,,):3 (electricsound), Monday, 27 February 2012 00:23 (twelve years ago) link

I have to agree - the LP does not live up to the promise of (the first release of, smdh) The Years. Also, why keep "Heirloom" for the LP but discard "Caregiver"?

Simon H., Monday, 27 February 2012 00:59 (twelve years ago) link

oh yeah gold bears, i liked them. and of course i am looking forward to allo darlin but they aren't really a slumberland thing. but i listened to the devon williams and big troubles and it was meh. the new princeton record is pretty nice for rich guys making posh pop, one might have minor flashbacks of the push kings which may not be a good thing for many people. i think i may only like the lodger records because they remind of sneaky feelings.

keythhtyek, Monday, 27 February 2012 03:37 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, um I kinda expect to be in the minority re: Cloud Nothings.

― Johnny Fever, Friday, February 17, 2012

I still haven't made up my mind. I like some of 'em of it, but yep it sounds so 1995 and even 1985 at times. I need to listen a bit more and decide what they do or don't add to those sounds

curmudgeon, Monday, 27 February 2012 13:15 (twelve years ago) link

that 2:54 song is grebt!

I have one thing to say: "Roxanne Shanté" (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 14:52 (twelve years ago) link

"Free Time!" by Pinkunoizu yall. i want this band to catch on

Pitchfork and the Washington Post love synth-pop indie entity Grimes. I have not given it a listen yet. Anyone? Or maybe they're for a different thread?

can't remember if i mentioned them but i've been digging Cue Fanfare a lot lately, though their current release was from last year. similar to the likes of ashby, birdie etc but without so much of the loungey tinges that unpleasantly colour much of the marina groups that they loosely resemble
