ya the nicki rap is so short, that is her singing the rest of it though (i think):

"People don't really know her as a singer and she's killing it on that track. People know her for her crazy rapping but that shows what she can do as a singer."

"Without You" is perfectly nice, although it's weird to hear Usher sounding more like Mario than himself

some dude, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 01:53 (1 year ago) Permalink

i used to switch the dial every time "without you" came on but i have since grown to tolerate it and occasionally like it

not really feeling this new kp single, it's just in one ear out the other at this point... it's possible my feelings will be revised when i inevitably hear it all over the radio and in public and see the music video etc

can't stop listening to that new katy perry single

is the human named "robin" a boy or a girl?

billstevejim, Tuesday, 21 February 2012 20:50 (1 year ago) Permalink

this was posted on wfmu's twitter which i thought was kinda neat...
http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2012/02/10-seconds-from-every-top-100-song-ever-a-free-cut-up-software.html

I listened through 2011's top 100 songs and I was surprised by the frequent placements of generic-sounding country singles. I'm assuming there's a bunch of country songs that stick around in the lower half of the Hot 100 for a REALLY long time, long enough to actually place in the year's top 100 by the time it's actually compiled in December.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 21 February 2012 20:55 (1 year ago) Permalink

country songs go top 40 or even top 10 pretty frequently these days, or at least it feels like more frequently in the past year or two than for a while before that

TERMAINTOR 2 (some dude), Tuesday, 21 February 2012 21:00 (1 year ago) Permalink

robin is a boy -- he's like the finnish justin bieber

speaking of biebs a new "viral video" featuring him and selena gomez and ashley tisdale and some other people has spurred a huge surge in sales for this sugary single by a canadian girl i have never heard of

apparently it was already a #1 single in canada

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 21 February 2012 22:30 (1 year ago) Permalink

CRJ was a not-top-finalist in Canadian Idol a while back. She had one song - Tug of War - worth a damn off her first album:

'Call Me Maybe' is the lead single from her new EP - it's been around since November, when it crawled into Canadian charts. It hit #1 about a month ago and is only the fourth Canadian song to hit #1 on the Canadian charts since 2007, when Billboard took over the counting of these things (other 3 = Avril's Girlfriend, the Vancouver Olympics theme song and the 'Artists for Haiti' Canadian version)

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 16:56 (1 year ago) Permalink

It was written by the dude from Marianas Trench, who are the midpoint between 3OH!3 and Fall Out Boy I guess? Maybe more like FOB musically, but grosser/creepier than FOB.

It creeps up on you unawares until it has invaded your brain and you listen to it compulsively. Given that the Biebz' manager just signed her and it reached #1 in Canada without his help, I fully expect it to take over the US.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 16:57 (1 year ago) Permalink

It only just hit #1 a week ago, and then has been quickly usurped this past week by Madonna. I'm not sure what has caused this song to get such a surge in popularity, since I've barely been paying attention to Canadian pop music as of late, though I do know it was apparently mentioned by Justin Bieber as being a favorite of his back in January, and she just released her EP with it last week.

MarkoP, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:26 (1 year ago) Permalink

And acually it was the rise in popularity of groups like Marianna's Trench and Hedley in the mid-2000's that put me off from paying any attention to Canadian popular music.

I think the only country songs that hit the top 10 last year were Jason Aldean's "Dirt Road Anthem" and Taylor Swift's "If This Was a Movie" (and you could probably argue whether the T-Swift counts). But lots of country hanging around in the top 40, for sure.

did green tractor not crack the top 10?

x-post-if we can believe Wiki's reference to Billboard, "Green Tractor" only peaked at 18.

also Lady Antebellum's "Just A Kiss" but yes we're talking about top 40, top 10 was just an aside and not worth being pedantic about

This is disgusting in the exact way that most things that involve Billboard chart analysis are disgusting.

What did I do wrong exactly? I just thought it was interesting. Sorry for saying something that you found boring!

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Friday, 24 February 2012 03:50 (1 year ago) Permalink

Nothing! I think some dude was referring to my whining about the charts.

It was interesting, by the way, just depressing to hear that exactly half of the homegrown #1s of the last five years here were charity/event things.

I Fucked Up (jer.fairall), Friday, 24 February 2012 05:42 (1 year ago) Permalink

"give me all your luvin'" hit #1 somewhere?!

here it entered at #37 and promptly exited the top 40 :/

lex pretend, Friday, 24 February 2012 08:33 (1 year ago) Permalink

it's somewhat depressing how little of the music that fits into this thread i care about/how little music i like fits into this thread

that said, kelly clarkson's new single is one of those that's taken on a new lease of life for me now that it's an actual hit that i hear everywhere

lex pretend, Friday, 24 February 2012 08:34 (1 year ago) Permalink

Yeah. Stronger grew on me quite a bit. Need to double back to that album.

I'm not sure if it's because of digital sales/more accurate counting or if there's actually just been a drop in successful Canadian pop since 2007, but in the early part of the 00's there were FAR more frequent Canadian #1s. And in the late 90s also. \(oo)/

On the other hand, those #1s were SoulDecision and so forth.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Friday, 24 February 2012 15:43 (1 year ago) Permalink

"Stronger" the song has grown on me too but it's nowhere near her top tier of hits and Stronger the album has strangely pointed me toward the conclusion that All I Ever Wanted is a kind of underrated album

DNRIYHM NATION 1814 (some dude), Friday, 24 February 2012 15:44 (1 year ago) Permalink

I still feel like "Mr Know It All" is actually a Natasha Beddingfield song

robbery by sudden snatching (DJP), Friday, 24 February 2012 15:45 (1 year ago) Permalink

it'd be aggressively vapid even by Bedingfield's standards though

DNRIYHM NATION 1814 (some dude), Friday, 24 February 2012 15:46 (1 year ago) Permalink

Yeah, the Stronger album is by and large the sound of Clarkson on autopilot ("You Love Me" needs to be a single asap though).
