I wish "The Sweetest Thing" from the Love Jones soundtrack was on this -- my favorite Hill ballad.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 7 January 2009 01:12 (4 years ago) Permalink

that whole soundtrack is great.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 7 January 2009 01:23 (4 years ago) Permalink

"The Sweetest Thing" may be my favorite Lauryn Hill song, period.

permanent o_Ovolution (The Reverend), Wednesday, 7 January 2009 01:30 (4 years ago) Permalink

i liked the remix with the 'Theme From S.W.A.T.' sample

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Wednesday, 7 January 2009 01:32 (4 years ago) Permalink

i was hoping ethan would show up here

velko, Wednesday, 7 January 2009 02:05 (4 years ago) Permalink

ex factor

ethan did show up, he hates this album for some reason

opinions4usic (deej), Wednesday, 7 January 2009 02:09 (4 years ago) Permalink

bass part on ex factor is dope

opinions4usic (deej), Wednesday, 7 January 2009 02:09 (4 years ago) Permalink

i know deej, i saw his post. i meant i'm glad someone showed up to provide some "balance" ; )

velko, Wednesday, 7 January 2009 02:25 (4 years ago) Permalink

I voted "Ex Factor" too.

I'd also sooner bump "Da Real World" or "Diamond Princess" most days but that seems like an odd either/or to me.

Tim F, Wednesday, 7 January 2009 02:31 (4 years ago) Permalink

Between "Lost Ones" and "To Zion", but somehow I've listened to the latter most so that's it.

Mark, Wednesday, 7 January 2009 02:37 (4 years ago) Permalink

doo wop (that thing)

8====D ------ ㋡ (max), Wednesday, 7 January 2009 02:38 (4 years ago) Permalink

If you read the thread, it was already quite balanced as far as talking about the overall album or even about Hill herself was concerned.

subroc back to haunt, Wednesday, 7 January 2009 02:46 (4 years ago) Permalink

this album is great i don't know what the hell some of you are on about

i like to fart and i am crazy (gbx), Wednesday, 7 January 2009 02:57 (4 years ago) Permalink

Quite intereesting (as far as I can tell) that people who heard this when it came out love it, but people who came to it years later don't get what all the fuss is about.

mitya, Wednesday, 7 January 2009 06:17 (4 years ago) Permalink

i think ethan was like 10 when this came out

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 7 January 2009 10:58 (4 years ago) Permalink

miseducation, da real world and diamond princess were all my favourite albums of their respective years

lex pretend, Wednesday, 7 January 2009 10:59 (4 years ago) Permalink

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Sunday, 11 January 2009 00:01 (4 years ago) Permalink

I was at a wedding several years back where "Nothing Really Matters" was used for the first dance. That seems important to mention for some reason.

Et tu, Crut? (The Reverend), Sunday, 11 January 2009 11:59 (4 years ago) Permalink

'forgive them father' is really underrated though possibly i'm just a sucker for female rappers slipping into jamaican patois, and fierce denunciations of haterz

lex pretend, Sunday, 11 January 2009 12:04 (4 years ago) Permalink

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

2 months pass...

i think ex-factor should've won actually

Hoos Passansteeno (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 19:07 (4 years ago) Permalink

lol @ the singles stomping everything out. classic album my ass!

I, Contrarian-Ass Mutha (some dude), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 19:09 (4 years ago) Permalink

but yeah was hoping "ex factor" would take it

I, Contrarian-Ass Mutha (some dude), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 19:10 (4 years ago) Permalink

uh, maybe it's just that the singles are so so great

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 19:13 (4 years ago) Permalink

it's got classic singles, sure.

I, Contrarian-Ass Mutha (some dude), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 19:20 (4 years ago) Permalink

i'm amazed that "The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill" didn't get a single vote. how i love that song!

jed_, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 19:21 (4 years ago) Permalink

yeah me too, although probably third.

i philosophy, possibly speak tongues
beat drums, abyssinian street baptist, rap this
in fine linen, from the beginning
my practice extending across the atlas, i begat this

flippin' in the ghetto on a dirty mattress
you can't match this rapper-slash-actress
more powerful than two cleopatras
bomb graffiti on the tomb of nefertiti
MCs ain't ready to take it to the serengeti
my rhymes is heavy, like the mind of sister betty
l-boogie spars with stars and constellations
then came down for the conversation
adjacent to the king, fear no human being
roll with cherubims to nassau coliseum
now hear the mixture where hip-hop meets scripture
develop a negative into a positive picture

is there a way to here this w/o those schoolkids?

plax (ico), Thursday, 3 June 2010 18:17 (3 years ago) Permalink

i wish!!

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 3 June 2010 18:30 (3 years ago) Permalink

i mean srsly wtf tho.

When I was like ten I thought that Lauryn Hill had like the most comprehensively beautiful voice and that everyone else should just quit now; consolidated.

plax (ico), Thursday, 3 June 2010 18:38 (3 years ago) Permalink

I edited out all the schoolkid bits in iTunes and have a version without them as a result, but short of that, not really.

Alex in Montreal, Thursday, 3 June 2010 19:17 (3 years ago) Permalink

"Ex-Factor" still is, in point of fact, one of the greatest songs ever.

silence is a rhythm too (Turangalila), Thursday, 3 June 2010 20:13 (3 years ago) Permalink

this entire album is amazing. only ones that i don't listen to consistently are When It Hurts So Bad and Final Hour

Alex in Montreal, Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:27 (3 years ago) Permalink

I kinda don't enjoy the middle of the album at all but the beginning and end are totally sublime

what it feels like for a goon (The Reverend), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:38 (3 years ago) Permalink

i love "final hour" - love the mystic, visionary tinge to her righteousness on it

now imma get the mozzarella like a rockerfeller
still be in the church of lalibela singing hymns a cappella
whether posed in mirabella in couture
or
collecting residuals from off the score
i'm making sure i'm with the 144

To zion

plax (ico), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:45 (3 years ago) Permalink

Never quite got the love for "Ex Factor," possibly because of the strain she puts her voice through.

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:46 (3 years ago) Permalink

then u r dead to me

plax (ico), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:47 (3 years ago) Permalink

"Lost Ones" is one of the best opening tracks ever though.

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:48 (3 years ago) Permalink

What does it for me personally is when she starts repeating "care for me, care for me" etc. - emotional lyrical repetition always gets to me.

silence is a rhythm too (Turangalila), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:48 (3 years ago) Permalink

tell me: "who i have to be?"

tell me who I have to be

:D

silence is a rhythm too (Turangalila), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:50 (3 years ago) Permalink

"Lost Ones" is one of the best opening tracks ever though.

and "it's funny how money change a situation" one of the best opening lines ever, especially delivered like that
