I think we can assume that both MIA and Madonna were happy to help each other, and found this collaboration to be mutually beneficial.
― da croupier, Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:40 (twelve years ago) link
apparently the remix of this track will feature LMFAO, let's debate who's winning there
― da croupier, Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:42 (twelve years ago) link
i hope we can all agree it's not the listening public
― "bruh" is the black bro (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:43 (twelve years ago) link
dan are you seriously suggesting that the woman who won an oscar for best song in a movie and who rapped with kanye and jay at the grammys while she was pregnant is desperately in need for exposure?Madonna hasn't had youth/critical culture impact since like the mid-nineties. Nicki and MIA have FOUR BARS apiece on this track. They are there as a sap to those two audiences; no one is gonna listen to that madge track and say, hey I should check this MIA chick out!

You are massively underselling/misunderstanding Madonna's position in pop music. The woman is a still-working pop legend; the appearance of both Nicki and MIA on this are pandering moves to current pop and indie dance audiences but the reason they both said yes* is because IT'S FUCKING MADONNA.
* though in fairness, Nicki would have said yes if it was Diamanda Galas; she seems to be addicted to guest spots
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:53 (twelve years ago) link
it's also noteworthy these ladies did not just sign up to rap for twenty seconds but walk behind madonna in cheerleader outfits shouting "L-U-V! MADONNA!"

― Little GTFO (contenderizer), Sunday, 5 February 2012 19:05 (twelve years ago) link
Gimme All Your Luv has some similarities with Beautiful Stranger and Amazing from the Music album. If the album is kind of like that then I would get more excited it for it.
I do wonder why she is going back to her Bridget Bardot/Truth or Dare pale look though.

lilbro: i agree with you except those were the parts of Music I found most unlistenable
― "bruh" is the black bro (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 5 February 2012 19:28 (twelve years ago) link
Are you serious? Those were the highlights for me. His more lean production with the electric guitar is why I love that album. A great balance to what would've been a preening, pretentious synth album.
― Tired of these edcuated basic bitches. (lilsoulbrother), Sunday, 5 February 2012 19:32 (twelve years ago) link
i had to fire up music for the first time in like six years to check but yeah i LIKED the preening, pretentious synth elements!
― "bruh" is the black bro (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 5 February 2012 19:37 (twelve years ago) link
yeah they were great at the time when she was doing it when it initially released but they can get irksome if not in the right mood. Plus, I do miss listening to Madonna with a guitar/bass/piano/whatever rockist boring instrument every once in a while.

I'd push that a little forward to include Music, but I basically agree. Which is not an aesthetic judgement on the the two or three albums that followed, and I love lots of music made by people who are on the other side of their moment or whatever you want to call it.
― clemenza, Sunday, 5 February 2012 19:52 (twelve years ago) link
The other side of their moment usually equals to young pop fans who can't fathom listening to someone past the age of 25.

does anyone under the age of 40 who isn't a music critic or film critic or industry flack pay attention to these awards
― mh, Sunday, 5 February 2012 23:39 (twelve years ago) link
uh, lex I did? I liked Music fine but it felt flimsy; American Life was terrible and after two listens Hard Candy left zero impact. Hung Up was, what, '08? I only vaguely remember it; it was clearly not for me.
― "bruh" is the black bro (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 5 February 2012 23:40 (twelve years ago) link
mh: everyone who buys us or people or star or whatever the hell sure does. She was watermelon big at the grammys, it got a lot of press. the oscar thing with rahman was huge international news for like a week.

iirc Music was one of the last commercial bootleg discs i bought from a guy on the street

feel like 25 year old me woulda had a conniption fit at cee-lo and madonna singing like a prayer at the superbowl. ten years later the thrill is gone.

actually half time show wa decent dan, hate madonna bending ppl who should know better to her will, but shur tis all about da moolah
― Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Monday, 6 February 2012 06:05 (twelve years ago) link
dan, mostly because of song choices i guess (i think Music sucks, and I think whatever that new pile of crap is, is crap), and Vogue didnt really get a fair shake with the medley treatment. from a production standpoint it was pretty good though
― Assmaster (Hungry4Ass), Monday, 6 February 2012 06:31 (twelve years ago) link
I enjoyed the show. I especially liked the Vogue and Open My Heart parts. If people weren't going to like it then why watch it? I guess hate watching is the thing to do.

i don't have much invested in madonna at this point. and i hate pro sports w/passion. still i wanted to like this. honestly it reeked of desperation. nikki! MIA!! pom-poms!!! medley!!!! C-LO!!!!! gospel choir!!!!! WORLD PEACE
and seeing her cavort with those LMFAO goons was flat-out depressing

― crüt, Monday, 6 February 2012 11:38 (twelve years ago) link
I didn't think it was awful. I liked "Open Your Heart" too but wished she'd done Express Yourself. Anyway, like A Prayer is one of my favorite songs so I was pretty excited about that. Think it's pretty clear that the star was totally that crazy tightrope walking guy.
