Next weekend, whoops. Went to the SASSAS site to see if any photos/video was posted for the earlier event, and saw it.

this is happening...

The Danish collective SUPERFLEX built a life-size McDonald's replica, then flooded it to foreshadow capitalism's doom for the 21-minute film it made in 2009. The collective's new exhibition, right across from LACMA at 1301 PE, has a much subtler feel than the McDonald's flood, with framed posters downstairs and tastefully designed black "safety" lamps hung upstairs. But the quiet, slow-moving film that plays out on an upstairs wall is actually fairly aggressive. Entitled Modern Times, Forever -- at 240 hours long, it's the longest film ever made, the collective claims -- it simulates the demolition of Stora Enso, a massive modernist office building in Helsinki. Originally, the film played for its 10-day duration on the street in front of its subject, so you could see modernism persisting and disintegrating at the same time. 6150 Wilshire Blvd.; through March 3. My friend does music cues/announcing for them! I'm told it's fun. One of these days I will go to it, but Sun Valley.

Gamera died for our sins (J3ff T.), Friday, 3 February 2012 21:45 (twelve years ago) link

Did you see Anthony Bourdain Layover Los Angeles? sort of interesting, even if he didn't go much East of Atwater or South of Koreatown.

I'm surprised when any show about LA goes that far east or south!

Spencer Chow, Friday, 3 February 2012 22:40 (twelve years ago) link

The Shield did.

wq (admrl), Friday, 3 February 2012 23:26 (twelve years ago) link

I should say any lifestyle show...

I would like to spend more time in west LA. I had a surprisingly nice time in Culver City the other week.

West LA is rad! Why were you surprised that you had a nice time over here?

Gamera died for our sins (J3ff T.), Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:48 (twelve years ago) link

It's so strange and different over there. There are no trees but the streets are very clean. And very mediocre things are incredibly popular. I feel like I am on some weird vacation when I am there.

wq (admrl), Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:49 (twelve years ago) link

I don't know, man, it's just a different world. I'm pretty mystified by it, tbh.

wq (admrl), Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:49 (twelve years ago) link

I like visiting but I don't see how I could live there and not feel a great angst.

wq (admrl), Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:50 (twelve years ago) link

and maybe...guilt

and a sort of quiet, unresolved anger

the non wealthy parts of west la (including the neighborhood "west la") are very interesting to me in that the are so anonymous. if i wanted to disappear/run away that's where i'd move.

buzza, Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:52 (twelve years ago) link

what's west la

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:53 (twelve years ago) link

it's a good question

wq (admrl), Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:53 (twelve years ago) link

I don't know man. I love living here. It's a little more spread out than East LA, but you've got some really good restaurants (especially Italian), easy access to lots of shopping and some really good movie theaters, a record store that I love (Record Surplus), plus closer to the ocean.

Gamera died for our sins (J3ff T.), Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:53 (twelve years ago) link

Also it's quiet, which I appreciate.

Gamera died for our sins (J3ff T.), Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:54 (twelve years ago) link

"i don't go west of fairfax" is the "i don't go above 14th street" of LA

Prince Rebus (donna rouge), Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:54 (twelve years ago) link

There are some good movie theaters. The ocean, I don't know, how great is it really?

My neighborhood is damn quiet. Sitting by the screen door right now and all I hear is birdsong.

wq (admrl), Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:55 (twelve years ago) link

honestly tho the expo line extension means i am several times more likely to head over to west LA

Prince Rebus (donna rouge), Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:55 (twelve years ago) link

Plus we have less hipsters. I guess the pest control is better over here.

Gamera died for our sins (J3ff T.), Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:56 (twelve years ago) link

those quieter parts are nice. beverly hills makes my skin crawl tho.

Prince Rebus (donna rouge), Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:57 (twelve years ago) link

like I used to work in westchester, lived in lawndale and redondo for a bit, but like, what's west la

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:57 (twelve years ago) link

Beverly Hills is the worst, I will grant you.

Gamera died for our sins (J3ff T.), Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:59 (twelve years ago) link

Since the mid 1990s, Palms has seen an upturn in its fortunes, with the revival of Culver City's adjacent downtown adding new life to the area. The district's diversity, affordability, and central location have made it an appealing center for young professionals seeking alternatives to traffic-choked Westwood and Santa Monica, but still wanting to live in a diverse urban setting in a neighborhood relatively close to the beach.

buzza, Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:59 (twelve years ago) link

West LA seems like all "hipsters" to me whenever I go, just that weird dayglo classically "LA" kind of hipster. But I don't go there enough to have much opinion. I go for movie theater or beach or to buy clothes. I would go more if I could ride metro, for sure.

I think of "I don't go west of Fairfax" as "I don't go South of Embankment".

wq (admrl), Sunday, 5 February 2012 19:01 (twelve years ago) link

I liked going to the Landmark in Culver City. It was cool to see so many teenagers at a movie about Pina Bausch.

wq (admrl), Sunday, 5 February 2012 19:03 (twelve years ago) link

my roommate used to live in palms, she was mostly eh about it

Prince Rebus (donna rouge), Sunday, 5 February 2012 19:03 (twelve years ago) link

Remy used to live in Palms. jeff lower case jeff used to live in Culver City. I'd move West if I got a job over that way.

wq (admrl), Sunday, 5 February 2012 19:04 (twelve years ago) link

palms is p horrible but this place is alright
