Ha xp, 'disco ex I Feel Love' is maybe the poll to do, it's true

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 09:23 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, I think I might go for that, to keep the poll more exciting.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 09:27 (twelve years ago) link

Thought about this before, it will be lots of fun but how on earth are you going to separate disco from non-disco? Do you mean disco-as-musical-genre or "music played in dance clubs 1973-80"? Does James Brown count? Do Kraftwerk count?

two lights crew (seandalai), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 10:49 (twelve years ago) link

I would vote in a disco poll! I don't do these single-artist polls, really, mainly b/c I'm breadth over depth, partly b/c of poll fatigue, but I like the wider polls.

Actually, I've just noticed VU solo careers on the list, that sounds kind of tempting too.

I specifically want it to be about classic disco (as a genre) released on 12" singles, so no proto-disco, or disco-influenced later genres such as hi-NRG, 80s house, filter house, etc. No James Brown (except for the few disco singles he released - check out "Original Disco Man"), no Kraftwerk, no Daft Punk. I'll probably allow early 80s boogie and italo to be included, because they're so close to classic disco, but IMO other disco-related stuff should be excluded.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 12:44 (twelve years ago) link

Good luck :) So we're not including anything released pre-1975 (or pre-1976 if it's restricted to commercially available 12-inches)? And no album tracks?

two lights crew (seandalai), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 12:57 (twelve years ago) link

I'm not trying to be negative btw, I would definitely vote in a disco poll!

two lights crew (seandalai), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 13:16 (twelve years ago) link

Hmm, now that I think of it, I'm not sure if it should be 12 inch singles only... There are some mid-70s tracks (some of which predate 1975) which weren't released as 12"s, but which count as disco. So I guess I should just trust people are able to distinguish between disco and non-disco, even if it can be hard sometimes.

And on that thought, I guess album tracks should be allowed, since the tracks that predate the 12" era often had their definite, long versions on albums.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 13:30 (twelve years ago) link

I'll vote in that, but my ballot will probably have a lot of boogie.

dead-trius (Eric H.), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 13:42 (twelve years ago) link

Not that it's a big deal at this point but the Stax poll won't just be singles, basically anything ever released on Stax (or affiliated labels) will be eligible.

two lights crew (seandalai), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 14:56 (twelve years ago) link

ok, I'll change that next time I post the list

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 14:58 (twelve years ago) link

I'll pick up that R Kelly one, it still needs to happen.

Poon Aggroved (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 15:28 (twelve years ago) link

three weeks pass...

chap, got a timeline for Bowie voting? I'm excited about that one.

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Thursday, 23 February 2012 15:01 (twelve years ago) link

bump for chap

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Friday, 24 February 2012 01:18 (twelve years ago) link

The rockist in me is so psyched for Bowie/Stones/Kinks!

Iago Galdston, Friday, 24 February 2012 01:22 (twelve years ago) link

Hey Chap!

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Saturday, 25 February 2012 15:34 (twelve years ago) link

Sorry guys, I won't be available to do it till late April, get stuck into to another one. Have messaged you, WmC.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Saturday, 25 February 2012 20:27 (twelve years ago) link

I propose
a) switching the Chap/Bowie spot with Crüt, who has been giving off vibes of Total Enthusiasm to do the Depeche Mode poll soon, or
b) bumping Bowie down below Depeche Mode and bumping everyone else up one, putting Lamp/Paul Simon next, or
c) I'd be willing to run Bowie right now if Chap wants to unload for any reason

(my vote would be a or b)

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Saturday, 25 February 2012 21:11 (twelve years ago) link

I've got some free time on my hands if anyone wants help. I'd suggest bumping my motown singles poll but we've just had the Jacksons and now have a similar sound in the James Brown one, so that'd be overkill.

a hoy hoy, Saturday, 25 February 2012 21:17 (twelve years ago) link

I think the fairest way to go is just to reorder #14-18 someway that bumps Lamp a couple of months and brings up whoever has the most time and interest among Crüt, Lamp, rogermexico and C. Grisso.

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Saturday, 25 February 2012 21:28 (twelve years ago) link

I'm unemployed at the moment so I can do the Clash one whenever. I know it's last but if there aren't any others available.

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Saturday, 25 February 2012 21:58 (twelve years ago) link

grr. (No offence chap - I'm mostly a lurker here. Until something important comes up.)

Bowie. Bowie. Bowie.

kraudive, Saturday, 25 February 2012 22:07 (twelve years ago) link

Not that I've got the time or ability to do it myself. So I'll just shut up.

kraudive, Saturday, 25 February 2012 22:09 (twelve years ago) link

I was looking forward to the Bowie poll.

kraudive, Saturday, 25 February 2012 22:10 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, I was looking forward to Bowie too, and I have time to run it right now, but I'm not going to grab it out of his hands.

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Saturday, 25 February 2012 22:10 (twelve years ago) link

Use the extra time to familiarise yourself with Baal's Hymn, guys.

(I was watching the film with the missus last night, not entirely to her pleasure if I'm honest)

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 25 February 2012 22:20 (twelve years ago) link

If you want to run it, WmC, be my guest. But if you can't be bothered I'm happy to do it later (if you grab it off me, can you maybe put me down for Tom Waits at some point?)

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Saturday, 25 February 2012 22:32 (twelve years ago) link

I definitely don't mind doing it! I had fun with Led Zeppelin. I just don't want to feel like I'm barging in and taking over something that you were going to have fun with when you had time for it later.

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Saturday, 25 February 2012 22:43 (twelve years ago) link

i can run the paul simon poll (poll simon?) whenever if the bowie one isnt happening

99x (Lamp), Sunday, 26 February 2012 02:41 (twelve years ago) link

Actually I am kinda stoked to jump in with Bowie now.

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Sunday, 26 February 2012 02:52 (twelve years ago) link

Honestly go for it. I don't really have the time to run it, but I definitely do to vote and enjoy.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Sunday, 26 February 2012 18:54 (twelve years ago) link

OK! I'll start it in the next hour or two.

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Sunday, 26 February 2012 20:57 (twelve years ago) link

Cool, looking forward. Don't forget to sign me up for Waits.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Sunday, 26 February 2012 21:08 (twelve years ago) link

done and done!

(the list in progress)

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Sunday, 26 February 2012 22:52 (twelve years ago) link

Could you link to the polls/nom threads when they open? I'm not seeing the Bowie one on sna.

a hoy hoy, Sunday, 26 February 2012 23:17 (twelve years ago) link

I meant to do that and forgot. Here's the new poll -- NEUPÖLLN - ILM Artist Poll #14 - David Bowie

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Sunday, 26 February 2012 23:19 (twelve years ago) link

haha I don't actually mind waiting to do the Depeche Mode poll. I just don't understand why folks are making the results rollouts so painstakingly long.

Big Mr. Guess U.S.A. Champion (crüt), Monday, 27 February 2012 01:17 (twelve years ago) link

Well, you gotta make room for the dance numbers.

if somebody nice shows me how to correlate them, I'd be happy to be in charge of a Cover Versions poll.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 27 February 2012 01:50 (twelve years ago) link

Stoked for Paul Simon coming up!

Does anybody think it'd be interesting to do a "classic rock singles" poll? Obviously there's a huge can of worms in terms of what would qualify, I guess I am thinking of like your meat-and-potatoes "Classic Rock" radio format such as I grew up with in the 90s, so kind of late 60s through to mayyyybe early 80s. Probably would have to do a whole preliminary thread just hashing out the definition. But would there be interest? Would the results be surprising enough to justify it?

Doctor Casino, Monday, 27 February 2012 03:24 (twelve years ago) link

shit, I think everyone would vote for something different there.

Big Mr. Guess U.S.A. Champion (crüt), Monday, 27 February 2012 12:03 (twelve years ago) link

I would secretly hope Dire Straits "Walk of Life" makes it to #1.

Big Mr. Guess U.S.A. Champion (crüt), Monday, 27 February 2012 12:03 (twelve years ago) link

the best way I could think of to go about that was if someone who had access to Mediabase radio spin data (I know a guy who hooked me up a couple years ago, I could check w/ him again), they could pull a list of like the 500 most played songs on all US classic rock stations, and we could just use that as the nominations list and vote for a top 50 or top 100 out of that.

DNRIYHM NATION 1814 (some dude), Monday, 27 February 2012 14:12 (twelve years ago) link

that sounds fair.

Big Mr. Guess U.S.A. Champion (crüt), Monday, 27 February 2012 14:13 (twelve years ago) link

Only if "Marquee Moon" is on the list.

Mark G, Monday, 27 February 2012 14:17 (twelve years ago) link

huh?

DNRIYHM NATION 1814 (some dude), Monday, 27 February 2012 14:18 (twelve years ago) link

Uh, if there's a "favorite citrus" ballot poll, I don't want Gravenstein Apple in the nominations list. "Marquee Moon" is a great song, but it doesn't fall in the Classic Rock canon. I kinda like the Classic Rock idea and cutting through a lot of the preliminaries with straight radio science.

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Monday, 27 February 2012 14:45 (twelve years ago) link

Normally I'd say let the community decide via its votes, but the community being ILM that'd likely produce some classic rock consensus in favour of The Fall.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 27 February 2012 14:51 (twelve years ago) link

pretty much, yeah

DNRIYHM NATION 1814 (some dude), Monday, 27 February 2012 14:51 (twelve years ago) link

Well, pfff, let's see the 500 list.

If there's 50 worth nom, then yes.
