That's EXACTLY how I use bookmarks tho - thank you Stet. xp

what's different apart from the name of the link tho?
Have changed some of the mod tools, but yea, this is semantic -- but in ways that I'm much happier about and I think are important. I'd prefer people to be going "look at this post" than "look at this poster".

(Which is really how I've thought of it for a long time, but the wording didn't reflect that.)

stet, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 23:07 (twelve years ago) link

statesmanlike solution imo

teaky frigger (darraghmac), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 23:07 (twelve years ago) link

Just wondering what about these posts you think needs moderator attention.

― Rotary Boy of the Month (WmC), Tuesday, January 31, 2012 6:01 PM

do u intend to ask that question to every person that flags a post

am0n, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 23:08 (twelve years ago) link

All the former SBs have been being recorded against actual posts for some time. Might be we need to scan over them, but haven't wiped them out wholesale. xxp

stet, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 23:08 (twelve years ago) link

xp well, there was uproar when the moderators were unquestioningly applying the 51, can't have it both ways

teaky frigger (darraghmac), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 23:09 (twelve years ago) link

The name change is enough imo, there's no longer a negative vibe hanging off every single post.

ya i know, i was just elaborating on my question upthread about 'flag post' abuse

am0n, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 23:13 (twelve years ago) link

i suppose it can't really be abused any more than sb could huh

am0n, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 23:13 (twelve years ago) link

I think the spirit of the rules are pretty clear. Don't get down and dirty with personal attacks. Don't indulge your meanest instincts here. Don't do stuff that is socially taboo, like spouting racist nonsense, or DOS attacks. We users get to call attention to posts we think violate these rules and the mods get to decide how to handle it.

Works for me.

Aimless, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 23:15 (twelve years ago) link

very cool new system

dave cool, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 23:15 (twelve years ago) link

See, I have a habit of bookmarking a thread as I'm scrolling down it. If I'm reading through a hundred posts or whatever, I won't have to re-read them all to find my place again. I'll obviously just have to adjust, but I feel like the new style impedes on the utility a little.

Good job on the suggbans though, stet. It's time for a new era.

See, I have a habit of bookmarking a thread as I'm scrolling down it.

I didn't realise that I do this way more than I thought, too. Turns out I also have been clicking bookmark on the last post before reading it, for some reason. Going to give this one a few days and see what people think. I'm already finding it a bit more useful, tbh.

stet, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 23:17 (twelve years ago) link

I agree with Aimless, the spirit of the rules are clear and otm. But I do encourage the mods to sort out the rules into details rather quickly; there are a lot of "we can potentially", "maybes", "I think" and "still need to discuss this" in Stet's reply.

TBH, conceivably, I need to consider stopping doing this shit. I noticed it at work today too. Like, I can see that if I maybe ever got married, I'd be all "I think I take this woman","in health and potentially sickness", "for richer and poorer, in some circumstances".

Don't know if you are being sarcastic; I was in early to applaud this change from sb to fp tbh

future debts collector (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 23:33 (twelve years ago) link

sorry, was just being random -- I just happened to notice today at work that I hedge things too much stimes and that reminded me.

(There really are a few open questions about FP, though.)

stet, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 23:36 (twelve years ago) link

Cool. No problem about open q's. I think the new system offers way better options than SB.

future debts collector (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 23:38 (twelve years ago) link

We can certainly start weeding out any spurious or baffling flagged posts.
This would lead to maybe taking different actions, like (off the top of my head) if all the posts are on one specific board, why not just ban the user from that board as a first step?

amazing that its taken three and a half years but thank you

― ⚓ (gr8080), Tuesday, January 31, 2012 3:03 PM (4 minutes ago)

I do this as a matter of course, and I've done so a ton in the past for loads of people i.e. whiney. I haven't said much about it b/c it isn't really anybody's business that I'm removing their haha-comedy-SBs that were cleary intended as yokes, and pruning back to the legitimate, offensive, complaints. The only way anybody would know if they were getting close/a serious number of undismissable actual SBs is when I (or another mod) tries to send them a private email saying they're getting close, and just to be careful. Maybe this isn't appreciated, because I've never heard back, but I've sent a good dozen of these in the past along the lines of 'hey, I deleted all the fake SBs, and you're still in the realm of ~40, just fyi sincerely remy'

gnome (remy bean), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 23:45 (twelve years ago) link

i mean i can be more explicit about every single comedy SB i remove, pruning action but it's gonna be really boring to read, annoying to do, and it'll probably make me do it less. the criteria i use is, i think, pretty upfront:

leave the SB/flag post in place if the content flagged is:

+ racist/sexist/homophobic/whatever in a way that ACTUALLY SEEMS TO OFFEND somebody (hint: no art of pretend offense), and doesn't contribute to a discussion or thread of conversation. context is key here, but SBs for, say clumsily using the word 'retard' in a conversation about the fairness of the word 'retard' are generally safe.

+ a blatant ad hominem

+ an invasion of the privacy, or the explicitly stated and well-known wishes of a poster ('don't connect me to my place of business')

+ spam

+ off-topic pornographic or NSFW in a non-pornographic or NSFW post.

gnome (remy bean), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 23:55 (twelve years ago) link

no real need for sb function at all by that token

teaky frigger (darraghmac), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 23:57 (twelve years ago) link

thank you stet, i like how this change put the emphasis on a post rather than its poster.

i also like how i can't see it making much difference to the posting future of flagbs.
